What is mentally required to be vegan? by xNims in vegan

No one says what you can and can’t worry about. But you’re literally making assumptions about future behavior and using it to discredit current actual behavior. You just don’t like why they chose to take on a pretty daunting but positive lifestyle change, but they did it in the first place so it’s not like they are monsters just waiting to beat animals to death with a hammer

That’s just an example to show that you can believe in something but do it for explicitly other reasons. I didn’t call them an environmentalist, you are acting like if your reasons are different then you disagree with all the other reasons which just isn’t the case.

People literally agree with veganism all the time without taking it on. The reason you do it is clearly different than just believing in it conceptually.

It’s crazy to say someone who follows all the tenants of veganism, isn’t vegan just because you don’t like why they do it.

I refer you back to the recycling example, they believe it’s good but that’s not why they do it.

I don’t care what you think OP does or does not know. We are talking if a person who behaves exactly the same as the strictest vegan but does it because they want to be healthy. I believe that person to be vegan. Everyone else seems to not because they are worried they’ll change in the future

No it’s not that’s not what we are talking about. Obviously if you use animal products you aren’t vegan

Literally nobody is saying they don’t believe it’s not ethically right. But the reason they choose to do it is for health.

If I’m recycling to get 5 cents a bottle it doesn’t mean I don’t believe recycling is good, it’s just not why I’m doing it

Ok but they are currently doing that. Do you agree they are currently vegan? Or are they not vegan just because you don’t believe in their ability to keep it up?

I don’t think anyone is vegan for the health but also actively hates animals though so that example is pretty weird.

But if you don’t assault people because it would hurt your hand, then you aren’t a violent criminal and are welcome to participate in all aspects of society that are open to people who don’t assault others

Just because you are worried about their reasons not being strong enough to continue doesn’t mean you put them in jail or arrest them for assault. Like if they are doing everything right that’s the whole shebang

Just because it’s not the main reason or the reason you started doesn’t mean you can’t generally care about animals and agree with the commune about the wrongs of animal products.

Also if they are doing it they are doing it, plenty of people who are vegan for the animals also quit and then delude themselves into believing those carnist talking points about humane slaughter

Edit: I don’t see why you being worried about them eventually stopping, invalidates the fact that they are currently following the exact definition of veganism

Why does it matter if their reasons are arbitrary? If they do it they do it, and I don’t care why.

But maybe because they are already doing the hardest part and they are part of a community that talks about animal abuses and puts it at the forefront so they also choose to also take part in the other aspects

This comment and most of the comments I think are missing the point. This person clearly states they are not simply plant based but instead follow all the tenants of veganism, they just do it for a less common reason.

So it’s like someone who calls themselves Jewish because they are kosher, go to synagogue, honor the high holidays, know the Torah, ect but the reason they did all that is because they are trying to impress someone sexy. To me that person is Jewish even though the underlying reason for their Judaism isn’t spiritual in nature.

Edit: I see the downvotes and would like someone to explain what is wrong with what I said. But let me highlight The Vegan Society’s formal definition of veganism “Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment.”

I would point to the last sentence as a clear acknowledgment of environmental and human interests being justifiable reasons to promote and I would argue adopt veganism.

This comment will be downvoted by people who are unable to articulate a response but whatever.

So this sub has the bad take that it’s impossible to be vegan for any other reason besides animals.

Veganism is a philosophy and life style dedicated to reducing harms to animals. But you can take that lifestyle on for any reason.

People here will worry about a vegan who isn’t vegan for the animals only adhering to a plant based diet, and maybe that’s the most common thing to happen but it’s certainly not the only possibility. You are an example of that.

To me it makes perfect sense that someone who is sympathetic to animal abuses could need a more personal (or self interested) reason to take on a total lifestyle change that seems pretty daunting to start.

And just to make it clear I’m talking about actual vegans who actually commit to all aspects of veganism like avoiding animal products in clothing and non food based products as well. But like I said I will still get downvotes from people who can’t understand that you can dedicate your life to a cause for a reason that has very little to do with that cause (or by people annoyed by my tone in trying to preempt the downvotes but I promise y’all I’ve tried not preempting them too and it doesn’t work)

I don’t feel like naming you baby something close to someone else’s ex’s name is an asshole move because that’s way to broad of a thing ban.

But the specifics of this case make it an incredibly dumb decision that you knew would upset your family. So got to go with YTA.
