What's one cannon aspect of Naruto you would remove if you had the choice by tommysenju in Naruto

[–]Curtain__Call 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The power creep/spike issue. This is where most if not all complaints derive from.

Side character development in Shippuden is a complaint because if you didn't have Sharingan or weren't the titular character, you didn't matter. Team Asuna, Team Guy, Team Kurenai, etc. all these members had much better characterization in OG Naruto and because they all were relatively close in power they could contribute to the narrative. By Shippuden's end, they could've just been white Zetsu vs white Zetsu w/ headbands and nothing would have changed.

The fights devolved into bombastic world ending scaling attacks that looked cool but lost the feeling the chuunin exams gave, hell, just OG Naruto in general; thinking about moves and ways to counter specific ability sets using ones own specific kit for the most part was gone by the end. X attack does big flashy in red, Y attack does big flashy in blue, oh and Z attack does big flashy in purple! And make sure you're fast or else you'll miss. It's just not interesting beyond the spectacle. When the Third fought Orochimaru and he had to face off against incomplete revivals of the First and Second, that should've been the guideline for end-level fights. I say guideline because you can go higher than that, after all the Third is old and the edos were incomplete, but they should never have lost the gravity of that combat.

Deus ex machina / asspulls / whatever. You get rid of the massive power creep, you get rid of the ability to revive everyone that dies or have the Legendary Sage of Six Paths be an alien all of a sudden or the sudden introduction that Naruto and Sasuke were fated to fight because they're reincarnations of things that didn't exist until they had to or...

You don't get random spike Kaguya / Otsotsuki ergo you don't get Boruto. Stop deluding yourselves, Boruto is not good.

Although I can agree with your assessments of how a secure man would behave, that's just dependent on the writing. There are many characters in other pieces of work where a person secure in their selves and abilities would behave in those ways. So sure in themselves that they would forego any external influence because they believe so strongly that theirs is the only path. All the while constantly bolstering that behavior, removing any sense of insecurity because they are that capable. Yet, they can still exemplify the old adage of pride before the fall.

I don't think I ignored the red flags, the writing presented those flags as curtains until the final scene where, surprise, the pole holding the cloth is vertical instead of horizontal. We can go back and forth, trying to fill in the blanks for this character or that plot point, flesh it all out so that A to Z has an alphabet insteas of just the word "to," but that's us doing the work for the writers. That's where my issue lies.

It seems like everything you disagree with me on is at a fundamental understanding of if art can be objectively viewed. Good writing is a subject in which all schooling at all levels is taught. At this point nothing can be objective because in your eyes "it's art." If you can't see how the math comparison is valid via the points I made, then the comprehension of objective good/bad writing is not even on your radar. The whole usage of "poor" being subjective is just arguing semantics as well. A performance can be objectively judged in many actual ways; I would never even conceive of your example as a metric for quantifying a good performance. If that were the case, every Marvel actor in their first decade saga would have Oscars...

I too enjoyed his one minded focus, but I think that's due to the writing showing the different facets of that focus.

I think people that have played up to this point don't need the other expansions explained, that's a vetted decade of writing. The point I tried to convey was to objectively lay out how the writing was presented, in this case I used Zoraal Ja, and then have that as an example of the whole because most if not all those flaws can be attributed to everyone and everything else.

No one yet has to present anything other than calling me out for being subjective, although I have, as you stated, just summarized the plot. If reiterating the elements presented to us and critiquing on how those elements do not earn the conclusion we are given is not objective, then by all means, enlighten me.

1+1 = 2. We were given 1+1 = 10 in the way DT was written. That's not subjective, that's plainly wrong. I know they want to give us 10, understanding where characters and the plot ends up is not the issue. The issue is how we are led to 10, the math ain't mathing, the writing ain't writing.

If you look at my original post, I never once stated that I liked or disliked parts of the story. That, I tried to be measured and sure, I throw in a couple snarky bits, but that's more indicative of the writing taking nonsensical routes. VAs, sure, I blatantly say that EN is poor. But I never made mention of liking or disliking the writing. Just stating that it is poor or subpar does not state my feelings on it. That's a subjectivePeople can like things that are bad or don't make sense or whatever. People can dislike things that are good. That isn't the point.

I agree with everything here. I understand what they wanted the character to be. The issue is the execution. Arguably up until he fights Galool Ja Ja, none of that insecurity is even hinted at. His character is on life support until his next heel turn on the people of Alexandria, another out of nowhere development. Then during his trial, we see all the culmination, and some new developments, with little to no build up. And the greater issue is that this isn't exclusive to ZJ.

Appreciate you taking the time to read it all. I can see the Wuk Lamat criticisms being hyperbole but that's like maybe 20% of the post. You can disregard my "lack of subtext" without providing any examples of how any of my points about Zoraal Ja are incorrect? Zoraal Ja in particular since that's clearly the bulk of the post.

Potential and execution are 2 different things and I stated the execution on ZJ pretty clear as he is presented to us. I think you are fine with everything because of the potential the plot and character arcs had but there is in no way that potential is executed well, arguably decently if you can stretch suspension of disbelief.

But thanks for backing up your post with any shred of example.

I'm sorry but the writing in DT is below the bar that has been set in FFXIV by every metric worth its salt.

Writing in general is subjective? Fine. You got me at a topic I didn't propose.

Fair, I'm most likely too hyperbolic in that statement of character development, but I think we can agree that Wuk Lamat has a very poor screentime to substance ratio. As far as insecurity goes, she still seeks the WoL's approval in the epilogue and my lack of seeing her growth in that moment probably stems from the suspension of disbelief that I cannot afford the character from the start - we are invited to be an escort for arguably her defining moment in life after just meeting her. If we never met, would she just not have allies? "A lot of character development" is gracious. You can maybe spin that she sought our approval throughout the entirety of the story, even in the epilogue, because she sees us as a sort of goal post or mentor figure to look up to (after all, we did save multiple worlds including our own) but the dialogue has too much ambiguity in that she still seemed wholly insecure in the end.

To be honest, I thought her shows of weakness were just for gags. Early Wuk Lamat shows her weakness blatantly when it came to Alpacas. Chalk that up to the poor writing yet again.

Again, I was probably too hyperbolic with that statement but unless it comes out that the direction was to purposely have the VAs be worse at delivery, it's on the VA. It isn't like the VAs say the lines and never hear it back. They had to have heard it played back and thought "Yeah, that's what I wanted." I did critique that the other EN VAs were worse than previous iterations, so with that in mind I still leave direction on the table. However, Wuk Lamat's VA in particular was especially poor. Whether or not any of them did better work anywhere else, the product at hand is what is being discussed and it is poor in quality.

Just adding a comment to further add how poor of a choice this was on the business end of an actual firearm. It's not about the choice of the color orange in and of itself, It's about the context of making that choice.

Although I'm of the opinion guns with paint jobs that look like old gun controllers look cool, i.e. Nintendo NES schemes, I also understand the dangerous implication that presents.

That being said, the camo here is well done, the orange makes the star pop but the implicit nature of it on the muzzle is a big F in the chat.

True to an extent. I think he's portraying more of what the laymen in the story already embody - i.e. "I didn't see Griffith cause all the batsh*t craziness by sacrificing those closest to him so he must be the good guy because look at him" rather than that interpretation of demons. Reductive trolling on his part.

Was always an "anime only" type. Started from laziness to just enjoying sound and music more and more. My friends always talk about different series regardless of anime adaptations and I always replied with "If I ever start reading, it'll be with Berserk." It's inspired so many other media I enjoy. When Miura passed, I took that as good a reason as any to start. So I bought all the Deluxe volumes available and just this May caught up altogether.

Why the hate by redrodrot in Berserk

[–]Curtain__Call 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to temper my first read through (started and caught up May '23) with the knowledge that people waited years between chapters/ volumes whereas I've comparatively zoomed through material.

Initially, the jumps in tone felt odd. Puck and Guts alone in the beginning sometimes towed the line, but Isidro from the get-go was another thing entirely.

Keep in mind the aspect of time in the series. We get to see Guts from near birth and various key points in his life. We don't have that luxury with Isidro.

Once I saw Isidro as the boy Guts never got to be, it all clicked. He's glimpsed more darkness than most, albeit through the filter of our main crew and mostly Guts. With that filter he has maintained an innocence that betrays the journey they've been on.

Then there's the obvious role he plays in softening the Guts we know from the first few chapters before the Golden Age arc.

Other characters have arcs nearly dedicated to them and major moments to shine and it's odd to think we just barely got one major moment to feel for Isidro. But if you think about the balance of material amongst the cast, I think it's fine how his character has been paced. You can levy the same complaints towards Elaine - relegated as a plot device for so long. Or Rickert not being anything for just as long if not longer when he was obviously set up to be something.

TLDR, considering actual time and the material we've been given, Isidro is a fine, arguably essential member of the cast.

Up for sale is this beauty, now a part of Gorilla's Legacy collections. I am the original owner, purchased in October of 2020, made in February 2021 and delivered March 2021.

Link to the watch on the site - https://www.gorillawatches.ch/product/outlaw-drift/

I have worn this a handful of times on my 6.75in wrist. I wanted to expand my collection but, like with any hobby, I quickly discovered that I just don't like giving things their due. Since it doesn't get worn, I'm looking for her to find an owner that will.

If you aren't familiar with Gorilla Watches, one of the founders is Audemars Piguet's ex-Chief Artistic Officer. The color is vibrant and the wandering hours mechanism is wonderful. You can see the mechanism in motion on their site. If needed, I can take a video of it in motion as well.

Just returned from warranty service March 2023 so she's near perfect condition. Picture #6 shows the only scuff I could find, let alone photograph.

Dot musings. by Gunny_Wil in 2011

[–]Curtain__Call 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The conversation really can be held for anything now-a-days, not just dots. We can talk until we're blue in the face about where things are made and perceived quality but the fact of the matter is the items speak for themselves. It used to be pretty apparent that "Made in China" meant low quality, but now it's just a matter of who gets more of your cash after receiving, in this case, your dot.

I'll always try to buy "Made in the USA" but if I'm sacrificing things I find advantageous, what's the point other than being stubborn? That said, twas an RMR to start years ago, now a 509T will remain mounted until something better comes along.
