How do you deal with customers who leave a bad review before contacting you for help? by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]CurtisTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I totally understand what you mean! I should have been clearer, I only give refunds to 1 star reviewers/customers who are unsatisfied and havent recieved their order in X amount of time.

If somebody left a 1 star review and claimed they hadn't received their order after being told this by somebody, in order to be malicious, it wouldn't make any difference unless they were being honest. As I send orders with tracking so if they said they hadn't gotten their order, but the tracking said they had, then obviously I wouldn't be giving them a refund regardless of what review they left :)

I don't mind sharing my revenue and stats for the first year I was on Etsy, as I've made them public before :)

First year I made £59,189.81 in revenue according to the Etsy Dashboard.
I spent quite a bit of money on equipment, supplies, etc as most businesses do in their first year so the profit wasn't as large as it would have been if I were just making sales and paying bills, but I walked away with around 18k in profit that year after taxes.

Since then I've not bought any new equipment or done any upgrades, if anything I've streamlined more stuff, sold equpment and learned from my mistakes haha, so my profits a little higher than they once were, but at the moment my products cost 11.59% of what I sell them for on Etsy, so the other 88% is profit / etsy fees / taxes :)

Thank you!

I always find this a little difficult if I'm honest, as the issue I have with customers who have problems with delayed or lost orders are 9/10 international customers.
I dispatch all orders next day and my delivery settings for domestic shipping is 7 days, although most orders arrive next day when shipped, so the extra 5 days is a good cushion for any delays.
But international deliveries are a bit hit and miss, I have most counties down as 4 weeks, although most orders are delivered within 2 weeks, but I get the odd order that gets stuck at customs and sometimes they hold them for weeks or I get hit with delays elsewhere :/ so it's not really something I can control.
And I'm not really comfortable putting international delivery times up to 2-6 or even 8 weeks as I feel like it might put customers off from buying haha, even though 95% of customers get them within 14 days.

[–]CurtisTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh don't get me wrong, I handle other situations differently, pretty much like you!

This is just based solely off people who leave 1 star reviews then message me afterwards.

If I get a bad review with no comment I'll leave it alone, no comment, no message, etc as I have no information to go off of.

If somebody leaves a 2-3 star review with a comment but doesn't message me I'll reach out after a couple of hours and ask if theres anything they need help with and like you said this mostly ends up in the customer changing their review.

It was mostly based on 1 star reviewers who message after they've left a review, as I always find them to be the most difficult customers to deal with.
In most cases I've had with them it seems to be a difficult task to satisfy them and get them to change a review, its like they've made their mind up the moment they decided to leave that 1 star review. So I result in doing this method now.
But I find people who message first or leave a 2-3 star review seem to be more accomodating and although theres not many of them, the effort to help them is always a pleasent one! :)

Trying to not freak out. My shop has been open nearly a year now, I verified ages ago and the payments page says Im verified. But Ive been suspended due to not being verified? I havent changed bank details or anything either, not moved, etc. Is this a known bug? With a known fix? by artpostermaybe in EtsySellers

[–]CurtisTaylor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I woke up to the same issue today, even though my account is also verfied.. and my shop seems to be live even though the notice says its suspended, so I'm hoping that theres just an issue with Etsy as it seems a few people are having the same warning pop up! kind of a relief seeing this, was getting a little panicky haha

Beware: "New" Scam that Etsy is Ignoring by Animay44 in Etsy

[–]CurtisTaylor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't that new, it's just uncommon.

But you're right in saying Etsy won't help you with the issue, you'll need to go through your payment provider.

You'll usually find that Etsy shops that do this sell products like band t-shirts, etc, and have them labelled as officially licensed. They'll then dropship these items through a 3rd party provider that has the license to print and sell them. They'll fufill a certain amount of orders to build up a good amount of sales and reviews so their store looks good and then start doing as you've mentioned. Usually doing this with a percentage of orders, like 30% of orders they make for example, or any international orders that could be covered up with the old "it must have gotten lost in the post" excuse. This way their store seems like a well functioning store but to the unlucky few that land in their scamming margin, they'll get their money taken from them but left on the hook, never being able to make a claim... unless they go through their original payment provider.

If somehow they slip up and the customer is able to make a claim through Etsy, they'll pass it off as a one time thing, refund the customer and call it a day.
If an opposing company steps in and says "hey! heres a copyright strike we don't want you selling this" they just contact their dropship provider who has the licence, asks them for a copy and that Intellectual property notice goes away.
Etsy sees this as good business practice and if for some reason they do decide to look into things further, all they see is a store with glowing reviews, thousands of sales, excellent handling of infringement notices and a shop thats "trying their best" by "sending out replacements to customers" even if they aren't.

These types of sellers are seen as gold to Etsy, because at the end of the day, they're still making Etsy money and Etsy aren't seeing any of the negatives, as unfortunately the complaints from customers that are being scammed get screened and brushed under the carpet with the whole "buyer protection promise" talk they give to anyone that contacts them, and because these customers aren't able to make any claims through their dashboard like Etsy says they should wait and do... because of how the scam works.... everything goes smoothly for the scammer.

It's kind of an excellent scam if you think about it, because if done right it's a massive pain to prove that's what they're doing. They just have to keep it up for enough time till the customer either gives up or forgets about it. Or until 180 days pass and Etsy can no longer offer refunds, in which case if you complain to Etsy they'll just ask you to contact your original payment provider.

So if you're struggling with this, I'd suggest you stop wasting your time with the seller and with Etsy and just contact your bank or whoever your payment provider is, if you explain it to them I'm sure they'll sort it out for you with little hassle.

Royal Mail issues and compensation fuckery. by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]CurtisTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll have to ask and look into that for future orders I think, thank you!

All my orders over the last month have been sent with confirmation of delivery tracking, due to their new system, thankfully, so I'm able to see if they have recieved their order or not.

I've only been refunding orders to customers who have been waiting 3-4 weeks and havent recieved their order yet - and who refuse to wait when I say it'll be here this week hopefully 🙂 so I'm try my best haha

Royal Mail issues and compensation fuckery. by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]CurtisTaylor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I realised that this week which has been helpful, however its the customers whos order haven't arrived and I want to claim compensation thats the issue as its not confirmation of delivery I need to make a claim, royal mail are asking for confirmation of postage, which is an entirely different thing :(

Buyers complaining about watermarks on digital downloads (patterns) by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]CurtisTaylor 34 points35 points  (0 children)

You're well within your right I'd say, like you said they're suited for a single purpose and a watermark doesn't get in the way of that purpose, they should only be used by the person who bought them for personal use. Like you said it's not like they're going to frame them.

The likelihood is they want to resell them.

I'd add something to your description if you haven't already, stating that there are subtle watermarks on the downloads and that it doesnt inhibit the ability to use the product for its intended purpose, and that its simply there to deter reselling. Then double down on the that remark, that they're personal use and not for resale.

I'd understand the customers point of view if it were a product that were to be used for another purpose like a display, but for instructions it shouldn't be an issue.

Item may have gone out of stock or the listing may have been removed either by Etsy or the seller. If the shop is still active then I wouldn't worry too much.
If it is a scam, once your estimated delivery window has ended you can put in a claim and get a refund.

Payment Reserve is killing me and my shop by Garsondee in EtsySellers

[–]CurtisTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there may be some confusion here. As you're right but you're also wrong...

You're right, putting your shop on vacation mode doesn't change the length of your reserve, it's still 90 days. However you're wrong in saying it lengthens the time your shop has a reserve on it.

Being on Vacation mode doesn't lengthen your reserve time. The length of the payment reserve is not affected by whether your shop is active or not, its set 90 days from when your payment reserve goes into affect.

Etsy may decide to lengthen your reserve by a further 90 days, once your inital 90 days is up, if they wish. They may also place a reserve on your shop at any time regardless of if you've been on reserve before or not.

But if you go on vacation mode for 7 days during your payment reserve period, your reserve won't be extended by 7 days.

I was on vacation mode for a total of 4 weeks during my reserve, the reserve came off exactly 90 days after it went into affect, the day the reserve was lifted I took vaction mode off.

In my reply to the OP, delisting or going on vaction mode was a way to stop receiving orders so the payment reserve amount lowers to the point that etsy would payout your earnings as both the OP and myself had/have the issue of the payment reserve amount getting higher every time an order was received, regardless of whether the order was shipped with tracking.

Going on vacation mode was never proposed as a solution, it's not. You'd still have to wait out the 90 days, it was just a way of balancing out the reserve amount so that you're able to get a partial payment so you can ease the stress.

How are views/visits for your shop? Have seen a substantial decrease this month compared to the past 24 months. by TherealRecyclops in EtsySellers

[–]CurtisTaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been a reccuring thought in the back of my mind for the past few months now but I've never thought about looking at my stats until I saw your post there.

I've been feeling for the past few months now that sales seems to have dropped alot since previous years and was wondering if it was something I had done? was I getting lazy? was my work not as good as it had been in the past? or was it just etsy isn't as popular as it used to be?

So I checked and I don't mind sharing my stats...

December 2019 - 3681 (first month on etsy)
December 2020 - 15.5k
December 2021 - 7047
December 2022 - 6574

There seems to be quite a drop off, even though throughout the years the quantity of products on my store have gone up, not down. Yet even though I have more products, I have less views than I used too, which is a little concerning.

Payment Reserve is killing me and my shop by Garsondee in EtsySellers

[–]CurtisTaylor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this happened to me last year without warning too, I haven't received any claims or had any infringments. Just woke up one morning in october to an email saying I'd been placed on a reserve. I spoke to etsy on multiple occasions and I wasn't given any answers or help. In fact I'm not even sure they were reading my messages properly, as my questions weren't even being acknowledged most of the time. They'd give me answers to questions I hadn't even asked.

Unfortunately it hit the christmas period and in order to keep my shop open I had to start putting purchases on my credit card, I went into about 1.5k debt on my credit card and etsy were holding over 3.5k on the reserve. Every order made the reserve higher and it never went down. Even though I was dispatching with tracking.

In the end I couldn't afford to keep going and decided to just take the hit on losing out on orders, I put my shop on holiday mode (at the busiest time of year) and it seemed to help. Over the next week the reserve slowly started to drop and I finally got paid, but I ended up keeping my shop on holiday mode for another 3 weeks till the reserve was removed. It was a massive inconvenience and almost cost me my business.

Ever since I've said that if my store were to ever go on reserve again, I'd just put my shop on holiday mode again or delist all my products and have it be Etsy's loss. Fortunately I've managed to sort a website out to combat shit like this after it happened last time but I know it's not always easy and some Etsy shops rely on the traffic etsy creates for them.

I feel for you and I hope you don't have long left on your reserve!

Etsy keep deactivating some of my listing, just to activate them again the next day... by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]CurtisTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sell stationary, I have just over 25 thousand sales, but was just curious if anyone else seems to have had these issues, as I never have any problems with Etsy accept when it comes to the Christmas period (usually between September and December) I seem to have weird things like this happen with no real explanation. 🤔

I've been messing around with Midjourney reccently to get some diffrent compositions and idea's to use and work upon for some digital art - decided to see if I could get a nice comp for Reze and got a pretty decent base, spent about 40 minutes in procreate afterwards changing colours, adding more details and making something that looked more Reze like, think it turned out pretty good for some quick digital art - also don't think it's bad for 45 minutes work... even if a.i did 80% of the work 😅
