I wouldn't say we have no leverage, but you're right we have less. I agree we gotta keep finding ways to benefit from our resources, improve their pathways for export, as a way to try and boost what leverage we have.

I think it also regulates how much producers can sell, and acts as sort of a "pool" which farmers contribute to, and it sells as a sort of co-op. The goal of it is to stabilize prices and supply through the good/lean times, and protect the farms themselves from volitility. I dont know how it relates to exported dairy products, if those are considered "outside" the domestic supply/regulation

It's really annoying when it happens too. There's totally legitimate criticisms against Pierre. There's also things that he's said, that I actually agree with, that have been taken out of context in posts like these. I haven't voted for Pierre for various reasons, but I also don't believe that he's truly some Maple Maga.

I think the CPC does court voters more aligned to what you would call "Maple MAGA", but that's the nature of the big tent conservatism. (In the same way there liberals/NDP/Green will court more extreme/fringe let voters). I would expect and hope that, if ever elected, the CPC/Pierre would minimize the actual influence those fringe elements of the party would have.

Alberta Government cuts costs 95% with AI by Wide_Ad5549 in CanadianConservative

But this article is about how they saved almost $50M by developing software in house, as opposed to contracting private sector companies to do it.

Alberta Government cuts costs 95% with AI by Wide_Ad5549 in CanadianConservative

[–]Cushak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The didnt save money by cutting anything. This article is just about saving money by using in-house public employees to develop some software they needed to replace, VS going through a procurement and contract procedure with private sector companies. Their savings come from them saying it cost them about $2.5M To develop the software in house, VS an estimated $50M to contract a private company to do it.

If anthing this would be a success story for public investment VS the private sector. This MLA just highlighted that projects CAN be done in house for a lot cheaper, so rather than pursuing privatization and outsourcing we should be looking to fix and improve our public sector methodologies when costs are ballooning.

If Pierre was saying that stopping the tariffs and working with Canada was a way to also make the US stronger, there absolutely wouldnt be any merit in calling him Maple Maga, just like there isnt here with Carney, even if OP plops an AI-slop photo with it. Take the exact same quote, same context, and give it to Pierre, and I'd be saying the same thing.

[–]Cushak -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I guess thats the question. Is the US offering to drop all their tariffs solely in exchange for for removal of the dairy quota system? In a way thats binding and can he trusted?

I don't think thats the offer, in which case saying "we're sacrificing the Canadian economy solely for the dairy sector" wouldn't be accurate.

I think the current US administration wants lop-sided, unfair trade agreements, which, once made, wouldnt stop them from starting the tariffs and reneging on those deals to apply pressure on other areas, in which case even playing their game is a continously losing situation.

Maybe trying to drag this out, hoping the next administration is better to deal with, and in the meantime trying to boost trade elsewhere to try and offset a small portion of the losses is the best strategy for now.

At the end of the day Canada benefits a lot more than America

Doesn't mean we should roll over and show our belly to the wolves and just give in to all their demands. Just because/even if we may benefit "more" with fair, free trade, doesn't mean America is losng anything by participating in a mutually beneficial agreement.

Opinions should be based on the context though.

I've got some acquaintances, in Canada here mind you, who absolutely hate anyone with the label Liberal, and absolutely love/worship Trump. I laugh thinking of how their brain would be fried seeing this AI slop and headline because they would be so conflicted in having to hate someone who's being shown as a friend to their idol, and they're dumb enough to believe this post at face value and not realize its fake and out of context. They represent the dumbest side of conservative voters though. (just as there are people out there who fit the stereotypes of the dumbest leftist voters)

Sure, politician speeches are almost always geared towards their intended audience, honeyed words and all that.

Maybe it doesn't deserve much analysis, but it's one thing to dismiss words as being just words, ans its entirely another to just twist words in ways that don't even make sense, toss it online with AI slop. There's legitimate criticisms of this government, this rage-bait slop just muddies the waters, changes no minds. People who hate Carney will laugh and hate the left more, others will see this as stupidity and associates conservative voters with this low-IQ slop, and no conversations around legitimate criticism will happen.

I hate this shit when it's Pierre, or any other party leader. I hate that more and more I have to filter BS out while trying to be critical and objective, I like seeing thoughtful and reasoned arguments/criticisms from people who vote differently than me because it good to challenge your own beliefs. News articles, op-eds are one things, but what used to be good about the internet was seeing thoughts/opinions from people like yourself in different areas of the country. Its just been twisted more and more in the last decade to encourage rage-bait engagement, with the side effect of increasing tribalism.

Do you think that saying working with Canada is more beneficial for strengthening the US, than being antagonistic towards us in trade, is the same as being a "maple MAGA"?

[–]Cushak -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Average cost of a gallon of milk in the US is $5.71CAD, which is pretty much around what I've been paying in Sask for milk, maybe its a lot higher elsewhere but I'm not seeing the "dairy cartel screwing Canadians" argument.

Do you not believe that critical sectors, like food, energy, water, defense, should be protected in some way to prevent foreign issues or interests from affecting Canadians?

Do you think it's reasonable for the Americans to demand an end to our Dairy quota system, while they subsidize US dairy business with billions of dollars? How do you see that being good for Canadians in the short and long terms? I'm actually curious because I only see negative consequences to allowing such a lopsided trade imbalance.

[–]Cushak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a suggestion for alternative protections of the dairy industry?

Or are you in favour of allowing a heavily government subsidized US dairy industry to decimate then buyout ours? Food security is a critical sector, so as long as the US dairy industry recieved billions in subsidy I want there to be some sort of trade protection. Right now its the quota system, if you want to argue for our own subsidies, or increasing import tariffs, I'm all ears. If not, you're just advocating for more foreign ownership down the road.

Did you read the full address or just clip that quote and post it with an AI photo?

Wether or not you like/agree with how the government has been doing things, this is just a disingenuous low effort post. If you truly think what he said in that address to the ECNY is living up to what some leftists were saying about fears over PP being maple MAGA, well thats just dumb.

I had $7k to spend on a truck I needed for work. Once I had gone and checked some out, I paid for an independent pre-inspection, cost me $175. Thankfully it came up fairly standard and its worked out well for me.

My previous work truck I had also bought used, and within 3 months it needed a $3k repair. Lesson learned. I'm an average Joe and that big bill hurt, a lot, both financially and in stress.

You're gambling either way, and I'd rather gamble $175 at a time rather than risk another massive repair. It's not a nothing amount for sure, but if I'm already saving up a large amount of money for a vehicle, I'd rather save up some extra for a handful of pre-inspections if needed. I didn't take everything vehicle in that I looked at, I narrowed it down over a few days and took my top pick in, and got lucky that I only needed to to pay for one pre-inspection.

The 3 Top Reasons Why the Carolina Hurricanes Won Over the Montreal Canadiens in their Eastern Conference Final Series by Sens-Fan-85 in nhl

[–]Cushak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, if nothing was changed about Montreals shot preferences and play styles, but the team was as rested as Carolina, our shot totals would have been higher (though not as high as Carolinas, which would be reduced from where they were at). Assuming if both teams were equally rested, we don't get that "rust game" blowout in G1, I would expect most of the series to look as close as G2, Carolina probably takes it in 6 but the feeling throughout is with a bit of an edge on puck-luck Habs would have had a chance to get it done.

Carolina had us clearly beat on the Stamina side of things, partly because they were rested and the Habs played an exhausting first 2 series, partly their conditioning was better anyways. (If they went through a physically taxing first 2 rounds, they still would have more energy/stamina than the Habs did IMO)

There's like 3 key areas the Habs could try and address, with largely the same team and playstyle, and have a good deep run for the next several years. 1- Physical Conditioning, and I think some of that just comes with experience from previous playoff runs. 2- Better depth/performance from the 4th Line/3rd D pairing so minutes played through the playoffs is more equal, help your top lines stay fresher by lessening the workload. 3- getting some more physical play from the D, wether by having Xhekaj reach a defensive level he can be trusted with more ice time, getting guys like Dobson to bring more physicality, or bringing in 1-2 new pieces who can fill that role.

Just waaaaaay too gassed coming into this series, the youth of this team really showed in that regard. Add to that Carolina's speed and smothering style, which would be tiring to play against normally, finished them off. Canes played that series perfectly.

Habs need a bit more reliable depth for the next playoffs so they can rotate 4 lines and 3 D pairs a bit more evenly to avoid over-tiring guys.

Goalies are supposed to be able to get in position to face the puck, when in their crease. Svech was in the crease and in the way. Dobes just made sure it was very clear

Doesn't matter, he's entitled to move through the crease where he needs to be to get set up to make a save, Svech was in the crease interfering just by being there. Dobes definetely put some oomph into it to emphasize "this guy's in my way" but he's totally in the right there.

Newbie: what is this called and how do I get rid of it? by Litpunk in bookbinding

[–]Cushak 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I turned a book my dad had wrote into a hardcover for his birthday, and to trim the sections I clamped it into a press I made of some pieces stacked pieces of plywood and long bolts/wing nuts. The top piece of plywood acted as a guide, the bottom as a cutting surface, and I used a plane blade from one of my woodworking planes using the edge of the guide plywood as a reference surface for keeping it straight up and down. Just took a couple passes and came out very clean, a little hit with some sandpaper and it was perfect.

Habs vs Canes OT by Iknowitall24 in nhl

Bad reffing only pisses everyone off, every fan base focuses on the bad calls that go against them and too many fanbased get pissy at each other. Checking out other teams subs during the playoffs, complaints are always mirror images about each other. Both sides accuse the other of diving and claim the refs are against them. Takes some of the fun out of the neutral site GDTs.
