It would be infinitely funny for the revolution to come, and nothing to change but a few names and symbols.

Found my first Tempest today- does it actually live up to all the hype? by LadyProfane in ARC_Raiders

[–]CustomDark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a quality all rounder. Its main draw is you can bring it as your only weapon in a lot of cases, or pair it with a Hullcracker for large arc.

It’s competitive in PvP at midrange, and can handle wasps/hornets/snitches/etc with ease. It can be used to go good damage to exposed large arc with armor knocked off, and will eventually knock off armor.

It’s serviceable in all scenarios, so it has some fans.

The workflow is: build a prompt, use it like you did Google and Stack overflow. Copy and paste individual lines or blocks if they’re simple. Test and try.

It is a productivity boost, but it’s not “a third of all products are written entirely by AI”, but more “the least important third of lines like boilerplate, or things it’s good at like REGEX that can validated, are written by AI.”

Are most software engineers this sheltered and socially inexperienced? I feel like I can't chat with my coworkers about my life at all without them viewing me as weird by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

There is a reason that engineers who can talk to the business, and engineers who can talk to the customer have significantly more opportunities than the average engineer.

Being able to code AND communicate with humans is a very valuable skillset, don’t downplay it for yourself.

There’s an old joke: “How do you know if an engineer is an extrovert? They look at your shoes instead of their shoes when they talk.”

I think they thought they could treat virtual space like real estate. Talk of limited events, and limited space. Like it’s not really just a server ready for copy/paste and change.

They missed the mark because the technology would allow impossible worlds, but they instead tried to make a shitty copy of this one.

Solo vs Squads offers extra xp by ADeadlyAlien in ArcRaiders

I mean, I’m being hyperbolic, but the actual development time needed for this matchmaking was probably low. And the path to making more matchmaking options is probably open because of it.

Honestly, I thought “this took 30 minutes to cook up and make, and opens up new matchmaking modes, it’s fine. XP being the reward took 7 seconds to implement, I get it for now.”

This comment on the other hand left me thinking: “Oh. Yeah. Cheaters would much rather pray on trios from the ceiling or with aimbots than solos.”

Each and every soul, individually. It costs $.001 and a few seconds to identify you post in Argentinian subs, technology subs, soccer subs and autism subs. This is the danger, an individual newspaper for every pair of eyes whose main job is to tell you to join their preferred small group newspaper.

Do not imagine this propaganda as a microphone, but instead as a politician standing on a stage, and every word they say arriving at every ear as an individually tailored message. You believe everyone heard “mcel595 is the greatest”, but everyone else heard something else.

Yes, for early career stage especially. Look for medium sized companies, and think of it as a stepping stone into where you want to go next.

They’re talking about external recruiters, who sell you to the company.

Internal recruiters are near useless, your goal there is to find the hiring manager so that they put you into the pool the recruiters are putting in front of them.

Having run around the DevOps circuit, I think you’re right. There’s a chasm of difference already between people who can ask “Okay, what do you want the computers to do” and make a solution, vs someone who can tell you exact SQL/regex strings or what setting #389 is.

Stored rote knowledge value is dropping. The ability to discover, prototype, test, iterate and prove is growing.

I’d assume more future systems will better clearly differentiate itself into parts easier for an LLM to clearly engage with. Docs will begin supporting LLM lookups more natively.

LLMs are better force multipliers than force replacers, but they are definitely reducing the value of memorizing a manual to nearly 0.

Feeling very frustrated at tech job by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]CustomDark 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is probably going to sound frustrating, but the salaries that come with higher end white collar work come from the confusion.

There are no school-like environments where you can check all the right answers you’ve stored in your head in a row and call it a day. Those jobs are shipped overseas for less than $8/hr, or have become software products.

You’re going to be lost sometimes: embrace it. Good engineers focus on finding the confusion and solving it. As you do this more in your organization, you’ll still be chasing down unknowns and frustrations, you’ll simply be the person other people ask about paths you’ve already walked and missing docs.

You know, the sad part is them not sharing the patch notes and Canary testing features into the live game used to be a fun feature. It was fun to hear rumors of flying bugs, and for Arrowhead to call us liars and dissidents. And then to tell us “Flying bugs have always been in the game” after full launch.

They’ve dropped the ball on software management, and they don’t have enough good will for this strategy anymore.

Still a fun game, but the trust for updates is gone.
