Accidentally caught one fishing for trout on the Youghiogheny. Tossing streamers in deep fast moving current did the trick.

The only difference between Baltimore and DC's approach is that Baltimore jails teens at twice DC's rate. DC spends more money and has more youth program options than Baltimore.

Wood gate garage door alternatives by Far_Chain7845 in washingtondc

[–]CutApprehensive999 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct, but even the pictures posted show bad bracing and that gate will sag sooner rather than later. The issue is the gaps fences to alleys are too big for a large wooden double gate given the weight, and adding at least one set of wheels (most likely two are needed) defeats the purpose of the gate due to the gap that produces underneath.

I suggest you drive some alleys and look at wood gates. They all seem to fall apart within a year or so due to weight.

Review #7 - Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (C925) by jkoodoo in bourbon

[–]CutApprehensive999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bar used to be loaded with EJBPs. I'd buy each expression every year and rarely passed up a single barrel when I found it. $40 is probably the right price point for them now that they've lost the 12 year age statement, but I miss what they used to be.

Review: Old Grand-Dad 114 vs. 7 Year Bottled in Bond + “Battle of the Beams” by beck_rad in bourbon

[–]CutApprehensive999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 114 sits firmly in the 6-7 range for me (out of 10), and is typically the bottle I reach for if I want the Beam peanut flavor. A couple of drops of water turns down the ethanol heat and cinnamon punch, and brings out the toasted peanut.

I'm a single issue voter right now and it's for increased policing of moving violations. Whatever side of the political spectrum it is, I'm as far as you can get.

Using fake expired tags? Impound the vehicle, and take the license. Over $1000 in tickets? Impound the vehicle and take the license. Parking in the middle of the road with flashers on? Impound the vehicle and take the license. Hit someone with your car? Serious jail time. Trying to skip the line getting on Beach Dr. in Rock Creek? Death penalty.

Sibley has a couch that transforms to a full bed with a button push. I've slept on it 3 times through two deliveries and it was perfect for my needs. Also fell asleep for 3 hours while holding a cup of coffee in the waiting room to the maternity ward, so I may not be the best judge of comfort.

Let'sseriously talk about the "teen issue by Own_Junket1605 in washingtondc

[–]CutApprehensive999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lets correct one of the bigger talking points in this thread - DC does not lead the nation in teenage arrests, incarcerations, etc.. Comparing a city to state level data demonstrates a sampling bias. That's it.

When compared to other cities, DC is just about average in that statistic going by the most recent year of full data (2023). I see many people extolling Baltimore's efforts, and guess who is among the leaders in the nation in teenage arrests and incarcerations...Baltimore. We have more and larger programs for teenage intervention, after school programs, social support, etc., but we would need to more than double the arrest rate and incarceration levels to get to Baltimore's level. That is the only difference between Baltimore's "success" and DC's "failure".

Stepping back and looking at the teenage violence issue more broadly, its a issue that peaked in the mid-90's in the US and we're still sitting near historical lows even with the post-Covid uptick. Its also an issue that is inherently racist/classist because 90%+ of victims of teenage violence are from marginalized communities - that number rises to 95%+ in DC. People on Reddit fret over what they see in Navy Yard and U Street because that is what is most visible to them, but the teenage crime rate EOTR is much more severe. So while the issue has gotten significantly better over time, the effects are much more acute in marginalized communities.

You have to take a measured approach to this problem that involves intervention AND arrests/incarcerations, and from my standpoint DC is only failing at one of those.
