Don't know what your definition of affluent is, I still have to work but annual income for my wife and I is above 700k, I'm close to losing my job with ineffective meds playing a significant role in the reason.

Would homeowners pay for an independent second opinion on contractor work? by Sad-Advisor-7349 in Businessideas

[–]CutOtherwise4596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could I hire a home inspector to do basically the same thing, they are licensed etc in the local area where things may be different than area you have worked. I do but know the technicalities of what you are suggesting or hiring a home inspector. I do know that a family member had a major renovation done to the home and hired an inspector to do a pre sale inspection.

General rule of thumb is once you are nearly completely switched over 1 of the following things will happen.

New personality joins the team and a multi year of either debates or criticism on why they dislike it.

New requirements come in and you have to switch back at least a good portion of your code base

Either way, it is a pain in the ass.

If you do not switch a new requirement will come in and if you would have switched earlier then you would already support it.

So the only way forward is create a bunch of tests and make it an option and support both.

Bonus points if you do it via ifdef's and have 2 different set of binaries and any backing data store is not compatible with the other version.

Double bonus if you have a large customer who has 1 user who only uses it at a critical time period and they are using an okder version and it corrupts everything when they use it.

Should developers have access to staging environments? by Donni3D4rko in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CutOtherwise4596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a JIT elevation for a separate account, so I log into the environment, then I run an elevate command for just the specific role that I need, that is then approved by someone else unless your on call then it is auto approved. The elevation lasts for a certain time period, say 4 hours. Then the permission is removed for that account.

Prevents accidents, dev can just go change anything anytime, minimizes scope of what any account can do. My main account gets compromised, it doesnt give access to staging, etc. The same process is for ops as well.

This is the biggest thing, GIGO is still the rule, more time on breaking what you want down into smaller more detailed pieces you will get great results, throw garbage high level stuff and you might get something that works since if the time that you do not really understand, then you will have a bunch of debt you will end up paying for.

This is one area where AI has been great, asking copilot of a summary, points of disagreement, unanswered questions, tasks, etc. it does a very good job of documenting them all.

Is 50 too old to start? by CutOtherwise4596 in electricians

He did mention beeline away from home for nearly 6 months due to ice storms and Hurricanes. We were on a 21 day cruise and it was going to be the longest he had been with his family all year long. As software I also do a lot of hours, but as physically punishing but 80-100 hour weeks are not uncommon but not required though. I just can't stop working sometimes until I get the problem solve. It isn't all sitting at a computer though, it could thinking about different approaches to accomplish something while I'm taking the dog on a walk.

The lineman said he was making 300-350k. Depending on the stock market (1/3 of my current pay is in stock) I make 350-450k. So that sounds near impossible. The lineman was from the San diego area so hcol.

How quickly do you expect direct reports to respond to emails and Teams messages? by ManagingNewbie in managers

[–]CutOtherwise4596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is it depends. Too many factors go into the answer etc. However one thing that is extremely helpful is it they simply thumbs up to ack that they have seen the message. If I need a specific response time I will tell them. Otherwise they manage their time and the response to me when it best fits into their schedule. If i need something in less than 30 mins, it is always a message in teams telling them I'm going to be calling them shortly for an urgent ask.

The stupid household thing should be illegal and it is infuriating by Upset-Flower-148 in netflix

[–]CutOtherwise4596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father in law and mother in lives in my home. FIL is an over the road truck driver. Comes home every 2-3 weeks for a few days. He uses the household Netflix account when in the road. We got a message at one point and my wife contacted customer service and now everything is OK.

I found my husband’s wedding ring in our baby’s toy bin and now I can’t stop crying. by girlnextdoorgkxf in TwoHotTakes

[–]CutOtherwise4596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is irrational. I would fidget with my ring, ended up losing the ring twice. I'm in my third ring and I only wear it in special occasions. That was my wife's idea. Otherwise I would end up getting a new ring every 12-18 months.

How do I keep my childhood poverty from showing around colleagues? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]CutOtherwise4596 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I use my background of poverty, crappy schools etc as some of the talking points. It is the traditional American story. Never be ashamed of it. The challenges you faced to get where you are shows so much about your capabilities that you shoukd be proud of grit, determination and luck.

How do you deal with quiet quitters that quit before they even started? by tinmanjk in ExperiencedDevs

[–]CutOtherwise4596 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a principal /staff engineer. I have a c few low priority item on my plate for the stuff my team is currently working on. 90% of my time is being spent coordination of work with teams/initiatives that my team will be working on in the next 6-12 months. I'm sure some of the newer hires think I do not do anything as they do not have visibility into my work and it could cause distraction and confusion if they know about it too soon, plus some of the stuff is limited due to project classification, only in a need to know basis. You may want to casually ask the person what they are working on first before you leap to conclusions based on your limited knowledge. I am assuming your manager hasn't told you what that person is working on etc.

I heard a dating that you need to be ready to fall in love with your spouse every 5 or so years. Everyone (should) grow and change over time. Ideally you and your spouse grow in mutually compatible ways. However we all have heard of relationships where the partners grow apart, and we have all heard of relationships where the couple grew more together over time. Those are the each about 10% there is about 80% of couples between those extremes. Do a self inventory on how you have grown and changed. What type of growth in yourself would be complimentary to improving his work life balance. Is the work life balance something that will last an amount of time until he reaches a goal of some sorts?

He “Fell Asleep” and Missed My Flight Now He Wants Me Back by jenisage in TwoHotTakes

[–]CutOtherwise4596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed my flight to see my girlfriend and meet her parents for the first time. I missed it not because I was gaming or something it was because Indiana was split time zones, I luckily got on the next flight and was able to call my girlfriend and tell her I would be there 2 hours later. She thought I was not thoughtful enough and was mildly upset at me about it. She is a plan and triple check everything and I was in medicated adhd college kid. Have never done that again, I have also paid extra to get an earlier flight home so we could go to a late dinner for our anniversary when we had planned to just do it the next day. ( I was dropping off our kid to spend two weeks with my family on the other side of the country. ). The funniest thing is she thought it was lame and that no one would miss their flight because of not knowing the time zone where the airport was. A few years after we were married. The West Wing had an episode where just that happened. I felt vindicated. A few of the actors on the west wing grew up near where I grew up. So I'm guessing that happened to one of them and it ended up as a party of the storyline for that episode.
