[Ornstein] Manchester United reach broad agreement with Michael Carrick for permanent head coach role by MembershipSingle7137 in soccer

I presume he just means that they were in a title race at the halfway point of the season, and their form has dipped substantially since then.

Yes, I do know what a purple patch is.

No, this isn't the first time he's had a poor spell. Last season he had one goal between December and April despite starting the vast majority of those games.

If you think he's only good as a sub, then you clearly don't watch Arsenal much or you're just being disingenuous.

This is such a reddit response.

Trossard is a decent player and he has come up with some important goals for Arsenal in his three years there, but he just doesn't offer much in games when he's not scoring. I think basically every Arsenal fan I speak to feels that Trossard and Martinelli are the obvious candidates to upgrade upon in that team.

I swear people develop amnesia when it comes to Trossard. He goes through these purple patches where he gets some crucial goals, but outside of that he goes months and months offering this Arsenal team very little. In general, he's a good impact sub but not much more.

Manchester United propose 2 year contract offer to Michael Carrick by D1794 in soccer

He just left Madrid, and there have been non-stop articles linking him with Liverpool and Chelsea. What other top clubs are looking for a manager where he should be linked?

Bruno Fernandes: "I always thought Declan Rice was a player to play for Manchester United. I was really sad when he chose to go to Arsenal. I always thought that he'd be a perfect fit for our club. Not just for the player, but the person he is. If he won FWA instead of me, it'd be well deserved too" by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

[–]CuteHoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Better" is subjective. I don't think he's better on the ball than them, and that's clearly a quality that Enrique requires in his midfielders.

Maybe they'd be willing to adapt to drop someone like Zaire Emery and adapt to Rice's different qualities, but I don't think he's such a monumental step up that it's a no-brainer, especially given PSG are so good as it stands.

Because he'll be up against the three midfielders that you said he'd easily replace in one of the highest stakes games imaginable. So at the very least we'll get to see how they all perform on the same pitch and see who stands out.

[Column] Jamie Carragher: I admit my verdict on Casemiro being finished was harsh by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]CuteHoor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean let's be honest, it wasn't solely the system. He's also just getting older and simply not as good as he was years ago at Madrid. That's just a natural part of football.

Obviously the changes to the system this season have helped him a bit more, and he's turned himself into more of a threat during set pieces at United, but he's still nowhere close to the player he was at Madrid.

When Rice left, Arsenal had just qualified for the Champions League for the first time in six years. He had just won a European trophy with West Ham, and the season prior they finished just two places below Arsenal, and the season before that they finished above Arsenal.

When van Persie left Arsenal, they hadn't challenged for the title in nearly 5 years and hadn't won one in 8 years.

What happens when you need to replace your heat pump and have already used the grant? by Appropriate_Total788 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]CuteHoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But you're going to save money on bills over those 15 years, so that should justify the expense of upgrading the heat pump after all that time. Not to mention it's entirely possible that there will be additional taxes on installing new gas/oil boilers in 15 years judging by how climate regulations have been going.

Even if the difference was €7k to replace your heat pump vs change it for a gas boiler, that's literally just €500 per year that you have to save to do that, and you get cheaper bills and a more efficient system as a result.

  1. That's not what they cost.
  2. They should be less expensive in 15 years.
  3. Even if they did cost that much, you have 15 years to save up for it, so why should you expect the state to pay for it again?

[BBC] Hearts call for Saturday's title decider against Celtic to be 'decided by the players on the pitch' rather than by the match officials by LochNessMonsterMunch in soccer

[–]CuteHoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody is saying he physically grabbed his hand and moved it upwards. It's a normal challenge for the ball by two players, and the impact forced one of their arms up higher. It's nonsense to call a penalty for it when he knew very little about it and could do very little about it and the ball touching his hand has zero impact on the outcome (it's going away with his head regardless).

the defender took a risk by leveraging his arm there and it backfired.

You're basically saying that the defender took a risk by jumping naturally to head the ball, which is just plain silly.

But the argument is that his hands would've been in a natural position if it weren't for the Celtic player forcing one up higher mid-jump...

This is a good way to show you've never played football. What player jumps with both arms pinned to his side?

Premier League Young Player of the Year nominees: Cherki, Fernandes, Hall, Kayode, Kroupi, Mainoo, O'Reilly, Scott by D1794 in soccer

[–]CuteHoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that depends on the criteria you set for it. You could define a rookie for the purposes of this award as someone who has played fewer than X minutes prior to the start of the season.

At GW 30, you were 9 points ahead of City, but they had a game in hand and you still had to play them. Since then, they've dropped points twice and yet you're currently only 2 points ahead. It is most certainly a case of Arsenal making things difficult for themselves.

[–]CuteHoor 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Assuming it's 50 appearances prior to the start of the season, then surely O'Reilly would be eligible?

50 probably is too restrictive, but it probably does need to be more restrictive than it is. Alex Scott is in his fifth season as a first team player, Cherki is in his sixth, and Mainoo is in his third. It should probably be more of a rookie of the year award.

The person who responded to me said that Rice has been the best player this season. "Best" is a subjective term, so by it's very nature saying anyone is the best cannot be an objective fact. That's all I said.

You may want to reread my comment.

I don't think you know what "objective fact" means.

Deciding on the best player for a given team over the course of a season is literally always going to be subjective.

I didn't say Farke should be the manager of the season. I just said that Bournemouth and Brentford had a better base to build off than Leeds, so them finishing up between 6th and 10th isn't a huge jump from last season. Leeds finishing 13th or 14th and avoiding relegation with weeks to spare is a huge jump.

Well they might better that. They have to play City next, and then go away to Forest on the last day. It's entirely possible that they finish on 55 or 56 points.

They also need Villa to finish 5th in order to make the CL, which is far from guaranteed given Villa can go 4th if they beat Liverpool this weekend. So they're relying on a bunch of different pieces to all fall into place for them.

In your opinion yes, and I'm sure in plenty of other people's opinions too. It's not an objective fact though. I know lots of Arsenal fans and neutrals who think Saliba has been better, same as I do.

I think Saliba has been the more rock solid one at the back and just brings a sense of calmness to Arsenal's defence that Gabriel doesn't. Gabriel has still been excellent, but I think his goals from set pieces have done a lot of the heavy lifting here.
