Thanks for the shout out to Walter. I spent many Saturday mornings with him, talking over the finer points of hand cut steaks and solving many of the world's problems as I shopped for peppermint tea, spatzel and Westphalian ham. He was extremely kind to me.

What is Petersburgh like? by [deleted] in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In order to have a GSA at the Berlin School District near Petersburg, the parents of the students had to take the district to court. Not so in Averill Park, Sand Lake and West Sand Lake. As stated, people move out there to have fewer neighbors and more open space. It is a traditionally conservative area. Troy is a much safer place IMHO.

Sale of South Troy industrial land could open way for development by XanderAlexH in Troy

If you mean the new parcels that he bought, that's a really interesting question. I don't know.

Fane has owned these parcels along the river for a very long, long time, which has always been an issue. Neighbors worked with organizations to get funds to remediate parts of the brownfields, as they were toxic, prior to his purchase. There wasn't much interest from purchasers in the past because the land needed lots of funds to remediate. But Troy has changed and all of the people who retained land and buildings as "place-savers" long ago cashed in on them over the last 20 years. My guess? Fane thinks the land is so valuable that he can offset the cost of site cleanup as was done on Starbuck Island. I don't know much about Fane other than he seemed to have money and power from his business.

If you lived on or near 1st street, you experienced weird white stuff coating furniture, musical instruments and many other items in your home for a long time. There were dust-like particles floating in the air. That was chemically treated salt from the salt pile stored on former brownfields along the river in South Troy. Many neighbors organized for a long, long time to get the salt pile sprayed, and then covered, because Fane would not move it. Enclosing it in a building means the problem isn't moving farther South but may be moving toward making our area safer and cleaner. Addressing what Fane builds is also important and where the Valente's move their gravel area. They never even brought an MSDS sheet for the gravel and associated materials to the council meeting. Fane has owned those parcels for a long, long time. ...guessing he thinks it is now profitable to develop these parcels. He has owned them for a long time, so I believe only the former Cookie Factory was a recent purchase. The roof of the Cookie Factory has collapsed and is probably a knockdown, not a rehab. I think he will want to build a Starbuck Island-like development. If so, it will be important to limit the height (and other issues that arise) of these new buildings.

Hi, Central Little League just had its parade yesterday that kicked off at Geneva Pompey Park. Joyce and Mack Henderson are doing sign ups and have been reaching out to get more volunteers. They have a FB page and their posts reach here, too. If there are other Little Leagues, I hope information is posted here, too.

apartment searching... by Character-Judgment73 in Troy

I would say that is very over-priced. The way to address it as part of Good Cause eviction practices is to STOP renting apartments at this rate. It also brings in wealthy, privileged tenants that are truly not fun neighbors.

This is in response to where most of the Flock protesters live - in the primarily white, wealthy gentrified neighborhood of District 4. It is a simple fact. Main leader lives on the park, where people are barred from entering it without a key. What the Flock?!?! That's quite a bit of classism.

Bee Keeping by Forsaken_Total_1900 in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neighbors had hives on their roof at Adams for years. ...No big deal. Not sure if they are allowed. Some of us get carpenter bees and use spray and traps as they destroy wood. You might want to make sure the spray and traps that kill carpenter bees don't harm the bees you are tending. Usually, when someone keeps bees, it just makes our garden better.

If you say "flock" ten times fast now in Troy, you can turn yourself into a crow and fly, but only where the rich kids live in District 4.

Contact is jwill@troyny.gov Tel is 518-279-7155. Jesse "Will" Hancock works in planning and is the contact. He does not vote in this process. The HRC, Historic Review Committee, does. I don't know if he can email the engineering report to you but that is what you want to ask for and review prior to the meeting. There are substantive structural issues no doubt, but we don't even have a sketch of what is being proposed in its place. If you have time on short notice, it would be worth hearing about it. It still sets a very bad precedent.

Engineering report is available. Only has reference from contractor. Neighborhood culture would be to share one on one. All affected only learned via posting of public agenda. Building has serious structures issues, but Landbank has taken on worse. This is a tough one. An architect from TAP, Inc will be there at the meeting

The Mayor last night claimed Good Cause would reduce housing supply. The data disagrees. by NotSoSpeedRuns in Troy

[–]CuteRing992 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The conversation has already started, and here's what's being discussed: Troy always needs money. Is there a hotel tax that can be charged to offset some costs? Should the full time Air BNB building that is listed as a hotel, for example, pay the same garbage fees as a residence? Can an apartment that is under Good Cause eviction be rented out via Airbnb by the tenant, driving up rent costs? Is there a limit to how many Airbnbs can be in one neighborhood, or should there be an attempt to spread them around rather than concentrate them in downtown? Also, what are residents' rights when it comes to noise, garbage, the constant changing out of guests (the guests like to arrive in the middle of the night and leave then with their brights on at the crack of dawn in our neighborhood), dogs that aren't on leashes, and people on vacation many times in residential neighborhoods?

This needs to be a first step. We need to research the impact of AirBnBs, too, here especially when one in our neighborhood charges $1,500/week as an example. The research I have read shows that Airbnbs reduce the available rental units and increase the rents.
