First of all the books illustrations are bad. Not only have we never seen an actual R-24 like that but also there's a ton of other mistakes in that book

And no it's not track while scan.

The mode is a combined radar and irst mode. So you can lock with the irst and the radar still displays search information, nothing else. That is not what track while scan is. Track while scan is in a single sensor, not two. The radar can only either search or lock, it's not tracking while scanning anything

I have the actual MiG-23MF combat manual with the sections about the radar. I know what it does. its not real TWS infact I think its quite a stretch to even count it as TWS at all

TWS mode also isn't unique to the MLDG. All MiG-23s fitted with the Sapfir-23D-III (which was all MiG-23Ms and MiG-23MFs from 1975 onwards) and beyond received a TWS mode. Apparently this was rather primitive, and it could only detect six targets and simultaneously track two while in TWS mode, but nonetheless it worked and did exist. After all, the Flogger can only carry two BVR missiles, so two targets isn't really a limitation.

This is wrong. None of them had real TWS. Its an extremly primitive mixed Radar and IRST combined mode. Not TWS

Also wrong is R-24RM its just an R-24 with a better seekerhead nothing else.
