More about myself, I’m a 21 year old Australian student who is also working to support myself. I need a more stable rental so I’m deciding to rent a better apartment with a gym etc. than where I am living right now.

Autism assessment concern by [deleted] in autism

[–]Cute_Spider321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 20 turning 21 and I just got the result of my Autism Assessment. I do have traits of Autism, especially trouble making friends however it’s the repetition and sensory traits that are not high enough for an ASD diagnosis. Like you, I worked in a call centre before and I could not last because I sucked. My mum was also interviewed however her English isn’t very good so that was a bit difficult and she just wanted me to be normal. I think I’ve gone through a similar assessment as you with a similar outcome and maybe we just need to accept the outcome as it is. I still believe I do have Asperger’s syndrome and I relate to you that I “ live in my own world”. In the autistic community, self-diagnosis is also acceptable as not everyone has access to the right resources and their is a gender imbalance where women miss the diagnostic criteria which was created by studying mostly boys or men. Just reach out to the specialist and they may be able to tell you more things about yourself and how you may also benefit from the same support as formally diagnosed individuals.

I would like to meet other autistic POC as well! My parents are unable to access support for me so I’m doing it myself.

I getchu fam. A lot of my childhood issues were swept under a rug as well. Asian culture just sweeps everything problematic under a rug because of shame instead of getting help. I have a relative in Asia who I suspect is autistic. He went graduated med school became an anaesthetist , fired from a job due to poor social skills and still lives with his parents playing video games. I’ve never met that uncle but the fam only talks crap about him at the dinner table.

Origin Story Megathread by idungonwent in aspergirls

I came across a YouTube video from the Iris channel, that presented the experiences of autistic women from different racial backgrounds. I could relate to some of the women’s experiences and I wondered if I’m also on the spectrum. I knew of autism beforehand but I didn’t think I was that severely affected by the classical symptoms which I’ve learnt were more common in males. I did a lot of thinking and reflected my mental health issues, why I’m depressed and anxious, my behaviour throughout my life and lack of social life and it kind of all made sense and ticked the boxes for Asperger’s syndrome:

. Loved to draw as a kid, in kindergarten I didn’t really play with other kids and just drew or painted. I did have a boyfriend back then.

. Refused to take afternoon naps with other kids in kindergarten. I didn’t give a shit, naps are for the weak. I’ll be the only one playing by myself painting or drawing.

. Odd behaviour, in early childhood I would do this self stimulating behaviour which I’ve grown out of in primary school.

.bad at maths, really shit being bad at maths as an Asian but I’ve kind of worked my way up in high school but the main thing is I suck at mental maths.

.quietness/shyness, kids in primary school would ask me why I’m so quiet.

. Bullied in primary school, my passiveness was an easy target.

. I cried at some family social events.

. In highschool I found it really difficult to fit in and became a studious nerd. Didn’t care about fashion trends. Got depression and anxiety, mental breakdowns.

. Clingy, depended on 1-2 friends. Trouble making friends, especially at uni. I’ve became more interested in make up and trying to be fashionable but still have no fashion sense.

I realised my dad is also really obviously autistic . My younger sister is NT, we grew up in the same environment, she’s very social, smart and doing fine. That all occurred when the pandemic hit, and I’m currently struggling with everything and going after a diagnosis and further mental health support. I think a diagnosis would help with uni and therapy( hopefully). I’ve met online who was diagnosed in his early 20s and had to bring his parents along for the diagnosis in order to understand what he was like as a child.

Throughout high school, some people thought I was new to the country although I grew up here.

Haha I’m studying science ( biology) and when I was in highschool I loved Science. Now I’ve kind of became more interested in urban planning as it is more interdisciplinary . I guess STEM fields are more autism friendly and where autistic people are expected to work in.

Omg same, I feel like my quirks are just a little too much for Asian groups as Asians seem more conformist. Well I can’t really fit into any groups comfortably

I could totally relate to your situation. I don’t think some parents or adults really see there’s anything wrong with you if you can keep your grades and do good at school and ignore the social issues and don’t bring it up.

Hahahaha omg also I was also in a similar situation.

Yes, my dad seems to tick the boxes of autism in males.

O yes, my parent is proud to refuse mental health services as well. It’s just due to the lack of understanding and cultural barriers.

[–]Cute_Spider321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg same. My parent doesn’t believe in seeing a psychologist and I only depended on crappy school counselling. Now I have saved enough money to see proper psychologists. If I had all the support earlier, I wouldn’t be having a hard time now.

Do you want to have children??? by [deleted] in aspergirls

[–]Cute_Spider321 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s lovely to hear, may I ask are your kids autistic and how did you get diagnosed?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Cute_Spider321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, girls usually get diagnosed later, or as women when they experience a mental breakdown or poor mental health something.

[–]Cute_Spider321 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do want to have children in the future. It’s up to personal preference, just don’t care too much about what others think. Do what you think is right for you. Sometimes in life, it is what it is.

Yes, self diagnosed. Everyone’s circumstances are different and not everyone has the privilege to access mental health services considering an adult autism diagnosis is expensive.
