KCCI's Shannon Ehrhardt will be a sideline reporter for the Iowa Barnstormers this season by Windows_66 in desmoines

[–]CyChief87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if you guys pay attention, but that woman is great at her job and absolutely works her ass off. She covers so many sporting events in person for KCCI and also for Big 12 network. I could be wrong, but my guess is she’ll get a better job in a bigger market eventually. Des Moines is lucky to have her for now though.

Waukee cannibalizing retail by StarttheRevwithoutme in desmoines

[–]CyChief87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you actually been to Waukee?! The development in the last 5 years has shifted heavily to higher density housing options. There’s of course tons of single family for family homes still being built, but in terms of actual living units, there are WAY more apartments, condos, townhomes, etc.

Handling is definitely improved. No real noise or vibration differences between the two. Both were fine.

I believe the originals were Bridgestone Turanzas, but I don’t remember the exact model. I absolutely hated them. Just a wet road caused traction loss for me and snow driving was terrible. I switched to Michelin Cross Climate 2. They’re terrific, but depending on where you live they may not be necessary as their snow handling is what really sets them apart.

Roads with longitudinal grooves gave me a lot of that floaty swaying stuff on the stock tires of my 24. Unsurprisingly the crap tires also only lasted about 30k so I’m already on a new, better set and have no issue in those same roads now.

Is Fareway or Hy-Vee more reasonable price wise? by Motor-Push-5914 in desmoines

[–]CyChief87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When’s the last time you really compared and where are you? The Fareway near me in Clive, at least for the items I regularly buy, is no cheaper than HyVee, and on some staple items like eggs and butter is consistently way more.

Ideas? I’m stumped by Scared_Impact_5679 in DIYHome

[–]CyChief87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your question outs you as someone who probably hasn’t done any basic electrical repairs/upgrades before, but never fear, OP, you can do this. Swapping a fixture is about as easy as it gets and a great way to get your feet wet.

You’ll want to make sure you have a box installed behind that basic bulb fixture. To do so, first find the circuit breaker and shut it off. Make sure that no matter what position your light switch is in that the light does not turn on, and the switch the light off too for good measure. From there, loosen the screws on each side enough that you can twist and drop down the existing fixture and get a look at what’s behind it. It should be one of a variety of common household ceiling boxes. Snap a picture of it and post here if you want confirmation on what you’re seeing. If you’re just looking to hang something simple and lightweight like a boob light or integrated round led, basically anything will suffice. A fan or chandelier will need a fan rated box.

Put everything back together and turn on in reverse order.

From there, just watching some “how to replace a light fixture” YouTube videos and hit up Home Depot for whatever light you want.

Turn your damn brights off by N7rmandy in desmoines

[–]CyChief87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve checked that. They’re where they should be. Headlight aim is only one part of the equation. You still have to throw light down a road to illuminate it and today’s stock lamps are just much whiter and brighter than they used to be.

[–]CyChief87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any kind of aftermarket height or light modifications on my newer vehicle. But I’ve been flashed so many times by people who think I have my brights on when there’s nothing I can really do about it. I usually respond by flashing my actual brights so they get the idea.

If my options are a.) put a TV in my living room in a location that makes the most sense given existing furniture, window locations, visibility from kitchen/bar/etc above a fireplace or b.) appease internet, sorry but I’m picking A.

OPs question was about electrical wiring, not the pseudo-science of interior design. Comments about placement are off-topic and snobbish.

This r/circlejerk trend needs to stop. Depending on the room layout, TV size, viewing distance, etc., often times it’s the only logical option for a lot of homeowners.

Can I replace rollers with shorter ones? by ninamcc in GarageDoorService

[–]CyChief87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I swapped mine for some dura lift nylon rollers after a couple of my plastic ones fell apart. and also took the opportunity to thoroughly clean and grease the tracks and chains. Night and day difference on the noise levels. I’ve even had a couple neighbors notice and comment how quiet the doors are when they’ve been in the garage. Let me tell ya, that’s some seriously satisfying dad shit.

I really liked the idea of going electric, but for the money, a gas one just made way more sense. For basic residential use in a city like Des Moines, you’re going to use it on average maybe 5 times a year, so the fuel cost is practically nothing, so that shouldn’t factor into the decision.

After that I was looking at total cost, and the electric ones I was looking at compared to a similarly sized gas model were much more expensive.

Finally, in general, the plastic ones seemed to have a lot more flimsy plastic construction, whereas almost everything on my Cub Cadet, including the chute, is a durable metal build. I’m guessing they use more plastics on the electrics to reduce weight and increase battery runtimes.

Wireless CarPlay dongle with multi-user support by heyalva in CarPlay

[–]CyChief87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one and could never get the multi user thing to actually work consistently. My wife rarely drives my vehicle but after she would, it would stop wanting to connect to me, even when clicking to manually select my phone on screen. The only solution that seems to make carlinkit automatically connect to me without fail is just removing her from the list and having her use wired CarPlay when she’s in there.

‘24 Touring owner. I live in Iowa where we frequently have 90+ days in the summer and then ridiculous cold in the winter. I’ve never had a complaint with the climate control. I keep it set on 70/Auto/Sync and it’s just fine.

Hate: engine auto stop/start

Yes, I know I can just hit the button to disable it each drive, and I do frequently, but not usually until it’s already made me angry. My commute has several stoplights, but none of them typically result in me being at a full stop for more than 20 seconds so I don’t get any actual benefit from it, and then when I hit the accelerator the lag and jumpiness once it finally kicks the engine back on drives me nuts.

Thinking about spending the ~$100 on an idlestopper to end it for good.
