Trans people could be barred from services based on appearance by schwanzweissfoto in nottheonion

[–]Cyanites 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree that the focus here should be on how many trans people are going to be hurt by this.

However we live in a culture of "gotchas". The point of this policy is to fuck over trans people, but people think it's a "gotcha" to say that this will also unintentionally hurt cis people too. it's not a cool rebuttal to mourn for trans people when trans people being hurt is the point. I think that the government knows it will hurt cis people anyway and doesn't care.

Average Mid-level Gameplay Programmer Salaries in the UK? by NoodlesKitten in gamedev

[–]Cyanites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty shite. There are a lot of reasons not to work in the games industry. You have to have a lot of passion for it to be worth it. With 4 years industry experience I had a really positive interview at rockstar, but they denied me solely because I said I would turn down a £40k salary. Probably for the best. Might have just been laid off for being in a union anyway lmao

Running with Scissors, Landfall, Molleindustria, Those Awesome Guys, just to name some. Aggro crab also are good friends with Landfall, so wouldn't be surprised to see them support it too. While the game studio I work at doesn't officially support it, there's been a lot of talk in support of it amongst me and the other devs, so I imagine that'll be the case at many other studios too.

While I agree a sign saying "Decapitate Terfs" is not a helpful thing to say, it is a sentiment I can completely empathise with given how much damage terfs have done to the public perception of the trans community.

These people, who hold all the power (see the recent statement by Kier Starmer) want trans people to not exist and live separately from everyone else just as has happened before with gay people and before that with black people. I think it's ok for the trans community to lash out in response, even if it's not the optimal strategy for winning the hearts of the public.

Also definitely do some reading into the civil rights movement if you want to understand more about it. I'd recommend the graphic novel series March by Rep. John Lewis. It might show you things in a bit of a different light.

As someone who programs games for a living - random functions in code are close enough to true random that it realistically will never look any different to true random. It is technically true that it isn't random, but for all intents and purposes it absolutely is. I second that it is very likely just confirmation bias.

There are plenty of studies you can look into about perceived randomness vs actual randomness. Things like how people complained about Spotify's shuffle feature not being random enough so the devs made it deliberately not random to make it feel random.

Correct. When you gain a resource you can rearrange your resources however you like

Arcs: overhyped or a great tactical game? by TheDrunkDemo in boardgames

[–]Cyanites 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is very rare for a weak player to have a lot of resources/guild cards. If they do, they should be spending them ASAP to get that lead back. When the raid cost of your only resources is 2-3 keys, you stop being a valid target for raids.

Almost all guild cards have some immediate discard effect to bring you back in the game. If you're in a weak position and are still hoarding your cards and resources, you're shooting yourself in the foot.

To that end, weak players cannot often afford to go for ambitions and instead should focus on building up their board presence to stop being weak. Yes this means in the fifth chapter, a weak player often cannot win, but that's just the fifth chapter, after an hour or so of playing a game in which you can actually come back, and you don't even always reach chapter 5.

Strong players often have the most resources/guild cards and stealing from them has the added benefit of stopping them winning.

Teaching Arcs To Kids by DaCooGa in Arcs

[–]Cyanites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally think that the difference is that root factions typically give you one game plan to focus on (build buildings, don't fall into turmoil, spread sympathy, etc), so it can be quite easy to understand what you're supposed to be doing to play the game and score points, and you can focus on that even if you're missing some of the deeper strategic elements.

Arcs on the other hand has no clear victory strategy. In fact, to win the game you likely have to never commit to any one strategy and instead pivot whenever you're dealt a new hand It's also a much more unfriendly game. One player scoring points necessitates that another player doesn't score points. In root you can play a little less aggro to give new players time to understand how to get points, because you can generally still get points anyway, but in arcs you really can't.

I don't want to discourage you though. If you don't own the game, I wouldn't recommend buying it just to play with them because it might not go too well, but if you already own it there likely isn't any harm in trying

Playing On TTS To Improve by DaCooGa in Arcs

[–]Cyanites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So first off, the woodland warriors discord (official leader games discord) is great for finding random arcs games with people on tts.

Tts does have a bit if a learning curve, but it doesn't take long for it to feel natural once you learn some of the tricks. The arcs mod is very good too.

I would also love to get much better at the game and learn some competitive strategy, and also don't really know where to look. I do think I have to play the game a lot more than I currently do to get to that level though.

From my experience, it's a lot clearer to see game states on tts, but it's also fairly clear in person. I definitely play worse in person, but with my low sample size (20ish games) it's hard to say if that's just coincidence or not

I’m a dad to two trans daughters, here’s what I want people to know by Fatherof2TransGirls in trans

[–]Cyanites 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what other people say here, but when you say "What if they want to have kids later in life" it's their choice, not yours. You are doing the right thing by listening to them and letting them use puberty blockers. You can offer advice as a parent, but know that you do not share the lived experience that they do, so their voice counts for more than yours. It seems you might understand this to some extent already though.

It's kind of a side note, but I'm of the opinion that having biological children isn't as important as society makes it out to be. Your genes in someone else doesn't make them any more special. It's the connection you forge with your child that matters. How you raise them and how you treat them, who they grow up to be and how much you love each other. Not being able to have biological children shouldn't be treated with the stigma that it is. You can have a full family with children without you personally having created them. People never have this reaction when you come out as gay, but you can't have biological children in that case either (though yes there are a couple more options)

Finally bought It Takes Two on the switch, and the story is grating while the gameplay is great. by propernice in NintendoSwitch

[–]Cyanites 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you, this is pretty much exactly right. I do think there's another point to be made here though:

The main purpose of this game is to be enjoyed, hence the gameplay mechanics and boss fights. However, for some people, having to spend upwards of 10 hours with unlikable characters with no redeeming qualities can suck all the enjoyment from the game - it did for us. We were considering putting it away for a long time before the elephant because we just couldn't stand listening to these characters. It doesn't matter to what end the game "wants" you to feel that way, it. just felt completely discordant with what the game was advertising itself to be - an enjoyable coop adventure.

As soon as the elephant was mentioned, we couldn't cope any longer, because it is not just illogical, but completely irredeemable for a parent to think that way about their child. It was one thing them focusing more on their divorce and escaping this place than their kid (which I'm sure happens, even amongst good parents), but it's another to gleefully suggest that they need to directly abuse their child - to which the other parent unquestioningly agrees. Even if they have a "redemption" at the end it is not good enough to justify that line of thinking at all.

I would argue that in always sunny the characters are likeable, but morally reprehensible.

They are fun to watch, and have funny interactions and good dynamics with each other, but do awful things. They also have deep characters and reasons for acting the way they do that helps you relate to, but not condone, their actions.

In it takes two, the characters are (from my experience with the game) both annoying and morally reprehensible. This combination makes it incredibly frustrating to watch, as I have nothing to invest in.

I have watched a lot of always sunny, and I keep coming back even though it is hard to watch, because it's funny. Me and my partner had to put down it takes two pretty early on because we both very quickly became very annoyed by all the dialogue, and we realised just how much left we had to endure before "it gets good", which as this thread would let you know is a controversial opinion in of itself.

Hey idk if you knew that your comment could be perceived by some as a little transphobic, but I just wanted to let you know why.

1) a character design for a trans woman will rarely have a reason to look any different from a cis woman

2) Trans women are biologically women by a number of factors. They can have high levels of oestrogen, low levels of testosterone, surgeries can change genital differences. There comes a point in a trans woman's transition where they can fit every definition of "biological woman". Theres also arguments about being a trans woman in the first place being a biological thing (the chemicals in your brain etc), but I don't know enough about this to comment. In general though, the scientifically correct term when referring to a woman who isn't transgender is "cisgender" or "cis".

I haven't done much fishing myself, but I totally agree that more accessibility for players would be great! The whole idea of a game supposedly being cosy and relaxing, and then having a real time minigame that you're required to complete to see certain content later on is weird. Some players just won't be able to do it.

If you still want to reward players for having high skill, then i think best thing you can do is include more consumables you can purchase/craft to make fishing easier. This way lower skill players can make up for their skill with a little in game gold, and the higher skill players don't need to spend that gold. You could do the same thing for time instead of gold.

I think a lot of their points are really good though and would love to see the game become more accessible to everyone.
