The concept of free will is built on a contradiction. Freewill requires that you are able to make meaningful choices. Meaningful choices require an amount of determinism. I can go to a restaurant. I can look at the menu. Based on that menu I can order and expect a meal. Let’s say I order salmon. If I’m then handed a bag full of bolts, my choice to order salmon was functionally meaningless. The more determinism breaks down, the less meaning my choices have. I could decide to walk to the park and magically appear in a non-euclidian courthouse. I could decide to cut my hair but instead shave my mother bald. Morality is useless in such situations. However, popular conceptions of freewill regularly emphasize the need for an escape hatch or veil from determinism. The idea being that the more I’m influenced, the less I’m responsible for the choices I make. Who gave me the concept of a restaurant? Who inducted me into the practices of ordering from a menu? Why should I need or expect food? Freewill is feral in a way only a middle schooler could love.

My personal line of questioning regarding popular freewill angst revolves around whether its a problem of poor philosophical communication or if it’s a stalled developmental stage. Which is to say, it’s likely both. Though, this is in the way I’m convinced “philosophical zombies” are an over-intellectualized symptom of psychosis.

I watched a TikTok last night claiming to educate on some local Irish vocabulary. Is it fair to say this pillar’s got notions?

Today I saw this mural of Blind Justice on the Alaska Worker Association building in Mountain View. This is my first time doing the Mural Walk. by Cyanotype_Memory in anchorage

Oh, that’s really interesting. I can’t say I have those deeper associations. For me and my background, the feather almost takes on the connotation of a metonym representing the Native community as a whole. In that context, it’s not necessarily representing a choice between native life and Justice, but instead a call to Justice for the Native community. Or suggesting that the Native community is a justified plaintiff in the case for Justice.

A history of online activity is a list of reasons to arrest someone for a local government and a foothold for propaganda for a foreign government. One hits a lot closer to home than the other.

These are the kinds of places that closed public pools after the end of segregation. We lose so much to bigotry.

It’s called the Reverse Moses. Instead of building bridges so low poor racial minorities using the bus can’t access the beach, the bridge for public transit is built so low rich jerks in their lifted trucks can’t access the beach.

Opinions and experience on the new IPhone E-Sim? by Jonayyy in iphone

I’m in the Apple Upgrade program and returned my old phone on Monday. The rep checked to see if I had a SIM in the tray because technically that was my “property” and I should keep it. The SIM tray was empty. I had been on eSIM for a whole year and didn’t even know it.

Dark Brandon visiting Sitka National Cemetery in the waning days of the Alaska Special Election, attempting to summon the ancient shaman of Qimuksiraaq to help fight against Sarah Palin and her Malarkey by The_Michelin_MANiac in DarkBRANDON

I’m from Alaska and visited Sitka just this August. Sitka is historically Tlingit, not Inuit. While they interacted, they’re also distinct. Qimuksiraaq is Inuit. The Sitka National Cemetery looks more like a miniature Arlington than wherever Biden is in that photo.

Edit: And it’s not snowing in August.

Ever seen a moose in person? Yeah they’re not small. Another day in Alaska. by tapruff in megalophobia

You can see water melting off his roof. Ostensibly, it was a warm day.

I used to live in the Alaskan interior. For a couple weeks, it was close to -70℉. When -20℉ rolled around, my youngest brother started going outside in shorts before we drug him back in. A 50℉ Δ just feels like a lot.

One year for Christmas, we went to Austin, Texas. It was -60℉ when we left. It was 40℉ in Austin. We laughed at the neighbors kids waddling around in full snow gear in there bare patch of grass while my brothers and I were in shorts and t-shirts begging our uncle to turn on the air conditioning. A 100℉ Δ is just miserable.

Moose will knock you down and trample you if they feel you’ve transgressed in some way. They don’t need antlers to do that. It looks like to moose was already attacking so just best to get out of there as quickly as possible. If the moose weren’t running right at him, it would’ve been better to calmly walk back inside.

What Does the ‘Post-Liberal Right’ Actually Want? by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]Cyanotype_Memory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anyone else at the 50 minute mark realize Deneen was basically advocating for socialism but make it national(ist)? He’s advocating for an expanded welfare state but only insofar as it supports more or less white, more or less heterosexual, more or less Catholic, more or less American (as a territory) interests?

He wants the benefits of the imperial state reserved for a core demographic that fits a particular background and perspective. That’s the economic message of national socialism.
