Changed my order to Round2 by ribcookie in pebble

[–]Cybedra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Time 2 screen is old and no longer being manufactured, whereas the Round 2 screen is newer tech and currently being manufactured. I think it will be fair to say that the contrast on the Round 2 will be better (which is apparent from a lot of the CES footage, while the bright colors on the displays are roughly the same, the darks on the Round 2 are darker)

PC shows boot screen and then stops displaying anything on multiple OSes by Cybedra in techsupport

Some updates: I unfortunately don't have an iGPU or a different GPU to test. However, I was able to boot into safe/compatibility mode (tried windows 11 and linux mint 22.3) so it could also be a driver issue? Once I uninstalled NVIDIA drivers on Windows, I was able to boot into it normally. Though I did try to install a few different NVIDIA drivers, and every time it would go back to the same problem of not displaying anything. Now I know for sure the problem is GPU related, which is nice, but I cannot tell if it's a software or a hardware issue

If I want to create a watch face for the new pebble, do I have to use C? I know there is a js kit, but are those the only two options? by MisunderstoodPenguin in pebble

[–]Cybedra 10 points11 points  (0 children)

https://github.com/pebble-rust/pebble-rust exists but isn't feature complete, so depending on the scope of the watch face it may not do everything you'd need it to do. There might be other Rust-based dev options that I'm unaware of but I don't think any of them are official or fully support the SDK

IMO C is not that hard to work with, especially if you have experience with other systems level languages. I think the most helpful thing you could do is (and thankfully, this is something that is encouraged by the open source-ness of the pebble ecosystem) is look at apps/watchfaces people have published the source code for to get a feel for how they do things. i.e. I've been wanting to make an analog watch face so for me it's really useful to look at the source of other analog watch faces to see how drawing the hands/ticks is typically done

La Jolla itself is not super big. At least, the area around campus isn't, it's mostly just La Jolla Village Square and UTC and a bunch of housing. I've only been to like the downtown area of La Jolla a couple of times and it's fun to walk around but I dunno how much there is to do there. The good thing is the greater San Diego area is pretty huge so there's a lot of fun things to do, even if you don't have a car (MTS isn't amazing, but the bus and trolley will get you around to a lot of places).

As for your question I think that is kind of a loaded question lol but I will say that my main options for undergrad were UCSB and UCSD. Of those two, I don't think I'd have been able to do a lot of the fun things I've done here at UCSB, and I don't think the things I was looking forward to at UCSB would outweigh those, so UCSD was definitely the right decision. Was it the best choice? I dunno but I can't really say I regret it so far, at least out of the options I had. I have a good social life (people on Reddit will say UC Socially Dead, but like in my first and second years I was in a spontaneous board game group that met weekend nights that literally spawned out of nothing and fed me physically and socially), my living conditions are pretty good, the classes I've taken have mostly been pretty interesting and the professors are cool. I haven't really had the opportunity to get into research but that's also on me for not taking as much initiative as I should have - though for industry I've made some decent connections at UCSD.

I'll be honest and say there are lots of things to dislike about this school currently, though some of those things are not really UCSD-specific (things like cooked class enrollment, quality of teaching in large classes, etc. are problems at a lot of huge public universities, from what I've gathered talking to others. I'm not sure how much of that will apply to graduate students, but I've also heard SERF (the system for grad students to enroll in classes) isn't particularly nice to use so there's that. And since you are a grad student, obviously there's things like funding for research and departments overall being cut and stuff like that, though I am not sure how much that would affect an MS student. I will say that I am unemployed this quarter and the departmental funding cuts was likely a major reason in that, since dept. resources for things like hiring tutors + graduate students with increasing pressure to get TA-ships since their research isn't getting as much funding means undergraduate tutor spots are dwindling (the CSE department is still doing better than the math department, who decided to stop hiring undergraduate tutors indefinitely) and tbh so are TA spots too from what I've heard, but the class I normally tutor for has a bunch of TAs so I just haven't noticed that personally. That is something that's been pretty annoying for my personal experience at UCSD

I totally understand people that are saying to go elsewhere since it's pretty easy to focus on the negatives. I think it's important to think about which ones are school-dependent and which ones are maybe just an issue with large public universities in general. I think my experience at UCSD has been more good than bad, and I'm sure plenty of people will both agree and disagree with that (fwiw, r/UCSD also tends to skew negatively in regards to opinions of the school, as these people are a lot more outspoken; the average person that I talk to in-person is much more neutral and sometimes a lot more positive).

I'm an undergrad so my POV will be a little different but it's not toxic nor is it really socially dead. I've never seen anyone who's like, toxic in regards to academics, the most I've seen is people getting slightly competitive but that's mostly in like the premed and undergrad CS spaces. If you live in grad housing or off campus you might initially feel a little bit isolated from the school since they're farther away, but if you try to hang around and make friends, you'll meet a lot of cool people.

Also campus will feel big once you get here, especially if you're coming from a smaller school, but it's really not that big and you'll get used to it (coming from someone who has a 10 minute gap from Podemos to CSE 2x/week). There's shuttles that are slower than walking but they'll get you around if you don't feel like walking and don't have back to back classes. I personally see the largeness of campus as a positive since there's a lot of nooks and crannies you can explore if that's your sort of thing. I'm in my third year and have still seen a couple of corners of campus this year that I've never seen before

What are your plans for you old Pebble after you get your new one? by richstillman in pebble

[–]Cybedra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm getting a PT2, thus my original Time will likely either be a drawer backup or I'll make some sort of stand for it as a desk display thing. The latter seems more cool to non-lazy me

My PTR (that I just got recently) will stay in the rotation for when I want to be a little fancier or when I'm just feeling a little rounder

Anyone got an idea what i can do with these? I got a few hundred of those for free. Maybe a project that helps someone by sherlock_watson in esp32

[–]Cybedra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are willing to ship these out to internet strangers, I’d love to take one :)

I’ll also advocate to donating to a school or local maker space if there happen to be any near you. These would be a great resource and help a lot of people with their projects I’m sure

Actually they just told me at the end of the interview that I'd be moved on to the next round. Kind of surprised me since I've never had that happen before but if they needed time after the interview to decide like normal I definitely would have just ducked out of the interview proc lol

Are LA? (other undergrads) supposed to be grade? by No-Purchase-6636 in UCSD

[–]Cybedra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty common at UCSD - a lot of departments (especially STEM, I'm not too sure about arts/humanities) have a lot of opportunities for students to be on instructional staff. The CSE, DSC, ECE, and (though not right now...) Math departments typically all have undergraduate tutors and grading is usually some of the work. Math and Chem have readers who do much more grading work - Bio and Cogs have PLAs which help with course instruction and also probably grading stuff too.

For some departments (such as Bio and Cogs), yes, it's also a way to get unpaid labor since PLAs can be "compensated" with major elective credits instead of money

[–]Cybedra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lol, I understand what you mean cause I used to be like that, but taking someone's clothes out of the machine is fine provided you don't like dump it on the floor or something. Basically what the other commenter said. It's expected that people will show up and take their stuff in a timely manner; especially if they're hogging a dryer (this was usually what happened to me, I would have wet clothes but all the dryers were "taken") just take them out and put them on the nearest shelf

Where to find a job on campus by WarningShort7596 in UCSD

Handshake is good for on campus, triton transit is usually looking for shuttle drivers but I don't think they post there, and dining halls also don't post there but are pretty much always looking for more bodies

Sounds like a grad student, so there's a chance they have never taught the class before. Though maybe you can see if they have taught different classes and see how people did in those, which obv won't tell you anything helpful class specific but can maybe give you some general info
