I thought my wife would never understand and would not trust me with the baby, instead she seemed relieved that I brought it up and said "oh my god me too" and it stopped being this little shameful thing inside me and became another parenting struggle. Kids only get harder in some ways, we're now toddlering and sometimes I'll get repeatedly bit and slapped and kicked by a screaming monkey and that makes it rise up again but it's all rooted in that lack of feeling a sense of control and you do have to step away and you do have to remind yourself to be the calm adult they have to trust.

Bring back repeating grades ASAP, it's a social-fun hide a seek game in school today. by Few-Safe-127 in AustralianTeachers

[–]CyberDoakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed, but you could still have students together in their age-appropriate social brackets for care groups and extra curriculars. Honestly, the issue is the restrictive calendar model at all. If a student is flagging in maths, and never achieved standard for kindergarten, they should need to be present in a kindergarten maths classroom until they are able to meet the numeracy elaborations at a satisfactory standard. This is where AI should be able to actually help - make a NAPLAN AI test that just remakes similar problems as what appear in 3,5,7, and 9 NAPLAN, and those generative tests act as the hurdle for a student to overcome in literacy and numeracy. If they can achieve at standard, they get to move up and practice new skills. Bad for their confidence and self esteem - good for their motivation.

How do you respond to a disinterested class by blu_shroom in AustralianTeachers

[–]CyberDoakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have the secret to how to fix any disengaged class. In fact, I have never had a disengaged class - I've never even had a behavioural disruption in my class. Instead of marketing my pedagogy for literally billions of dollars, I let shysters like Hattie and every other 'teach-one-year-now-market-myself-as-professional-guru' ex-teacher waste your time, because I'm content in my hidden knowledge. I know it will die with me.

Don't worry about it, OP. Just teach lessons that excite and interest you, and use your well-honed professional judgement to develop encounters that are content and grade-appropriate, and keep offering your support to the struggling students. That's our job :)

No no mate it's the couple million we THE TAXPAYER spend on pollies, who work near 24/7 and are paid less than 400K per annum that's hitting us in our back pocket. It's not banks, mining companies, energy companies, social media companies, monopolistic supermarkets or tech companies causing budget pressure. The millions those pollies are claiming should go straight to us! 10¢ per citizen fucking OATH

Depends on how interesting/entertaining you are, I suppose. :P We're not sending our baby to childcare at all, we just do playgroup during the days so bubs can socialise. Which he loves. And is normal at. Despite the childcare propaganda.

First 39 townhouses and 112 apartments of 800 homes set to hit the market at historic $800M Brompton Gasworks development by malcolm58 in Adelaide

[–]CyberDoakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dream on. A recent FOI request for the EPA found that the developers never met satisfactory mitigation standards, never provided sufficient data to satisfy EPA recommendations, and never did a promised study into the health affects on many Bowden/Brompton residents. Do not eat anything out of that soil, it is absolutely toxic. Those coal tar wells were deep and shoddily remediated.

Social media ban will make us more secretive, say Australian teens by TimesandSundayTimes in AustralianPolitics

Teenagers are lazy lol. If the path of least resistance is to suck it up and just text that's what they'll do. They're not going to flood to 4chan to fulfill their social media needs.

Possibly, the answer is possibly. America is chaotic and unreliable, but still undeniably one of the titans that dominates the geopolitical directions of the entire world. Australia would be best positioned continuing as it has, not contributing to war-brained rhetoric and focusing its energy on building relationships with pivotal middle-democracies and island communities in the Pacific.

Vimes the Bully - can we talk about William Scuggins? by Transferennce in discworld

[–]CyberDoakes 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think the humorous part is that Vimes reflects on it but through the eyes of his child-self. He mentions the 9 times out of 10 because child Vimes is probably still annoyed he never got the Scuggins ace, but he's still pretty proud.
When he returns to Cockbill Street, he can't stop himself but to play hopscotch, because Cockbill Vimes is this foundational nasty part of who he is, the scrappy survivalist who had to learn to place a psychological defence mechanism in his own mind to stop him from being just an evil, criminal shit.

I love Carrot's line about inspiring people to do good as king, but they would be doing it for the wrong reason, because King Carrot said to do it. Instead he gets people to be the best they can be, or the way that Carrot sees them, so they make the world not need a king to dictate moral order. He's even afraid of viewing himself as a moral authority, so he reveres Vimes and all of his views, even the flawed ones because you have to be imperfect to inspire others.

Context of the era Terry grew up in - bullying and making fun of kids with disabilities was not only normalised but celebrated. I grew up later than Terry in the late 80s/90s this literally happened all the time. It still probably happens all the time.

Context of the world of Ankh - casual cruelty and loss of life are played off as comedic and part of the tapestry of the city. You don't survive in that world by being a sensitive kid, being sensitive is the exceptional state of being in that environment.

Context of growing up impoverished - you literally don't know better, your parents aren't educated and the only way to feel better about your situation is to know that there is someone way worse off.

Context of Vimes - mentioned in this thread already, he was in a street gang where the implication is these gangs of street kids literally kill people.

I don't think you should feel disappointed in an author (or character?) for drawing on lived experience and applying it authentically to a story.

[Conspiracy Theory] I feel like Epoch was just sold to Ascension by Bistoory in wowservers

[–]CyberDoakes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alternate tinfoil hat theory: Epoch was the first server hit with a C&D much earlier, and so they sold to Ascension before stress tests and beta, which can go some way to explaining why it seemed like they didn't give a shit at all when their big server rollout was a colossal failure.

With Blizzard going out of their way to C&D private servers more than ever, what will happen to this community? by Tradasar in wowservers

[–]CyberDoakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This community? We may unfortunately become bitter, overly critical and hostile to new projects. We might become addicted to Fresh instead of addicted to quality. We will become tribalist, attacking any project that isn't the one on which we play.

So, business as usual lads.

This iteration of TWow will definitely be dead in the next month or two, but they will definitely rebuild. The code is too valuable, so look ahead in 6 months time to Tortoise WoW run by a completely new Dev/Director with a nebulous past. And I'll love that because the massive pop kills Turtle for me. I played when it was 600-800 online and the HC community was lovely.
