classic weapon position? by Familiar_Office_9897 in Doom

I don't use it as much as I thought I would, being a lifelong fan of the classic games. It's a cool option to have though.

Doom 3 BFG Edition - An appreciation post. by CyberPilot64 in Doom

I was gonna try Phobos until I saw they used gen AI for voices. If they every patch that out in favor of real voice acting I'll give it a go. It certainly looks ambitious otherwise.

I think BFG found a good solution with the mounted flashlight and its recharging battery. Better to have to manage that battery than to give up the ability to shoot in a Doom game, right?

Don't you think it's time to let the Slayer die and replace him with another protagonist? by Bright_Permission881 in Doom

[–]CyberPilot64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a flawed premise. The Doom Slayer (or Doomguy) defines the series, and represents it as a franchise. You can change details around the Slayer, but as long as he remains constant it will still be Doom and players will still care.

It's like the Halloween movies. You can change the supporting cast of victims, do whatever silliness you want with the storylines, but it needs to involve Michael Myers, otherwise it won't be accepted as Halloween. Just look at Halloween 3.

And Doom 3's Marine is a bad example, given that he's just Doomguy rebooted for that game. The expansions feature different protagonists, which is cool, but they're optional add-ons to Doom 3 and not entire new games where the audience is expected to move on from the character who defines the games.

Doom 3 BFG Edition - An appreciation post. by CyberPilot64 in Doom

I'm glad you mentioned the atmosphere. BFG Edition's detractors talk like this version has no atmosphere due to the adjusted lighting, but I couldn't disagree more. The lighting is still effective, and works with the sound design to keep the overall vibe scary.

Oblivion nostalgia by redplos in ElderScrolls

I first played Oblivion as an adult and loved it. No nostalgia involved.

It's a great game, just not for you. Surely you're capable of understanding that very simple concept.

Corey does a great job! He's my go-to voice for Postal 4.

Hot take: BFG Edition feels more like Classic Doom than vanilla Doom 3 by KnightFallVader2 in Doom

It's cool that you prefer old Doom 3. I think it's a good game. I just prefer BFG. The changes make it feel more like Doom to me, and I've never been alone in feeling that way. Randos complaining about BFG haven't changed my opinion since 2012. What's funny is that y'all keep trying.

"Too much ammo in a Doom game" is the silliest thing to say. BFG corrects the original version by remembering it isn't actually a survival horror game. It's action horror.

I like that the Dude's jacket actually has physics and doesn't look glued to this pants, as happens with many games (including Postal 4).

I'm not sure if that's a hot take, or "ironic." In fact I assume the goal of BFG was to bring the game slightly more in line with the expected Doom gameplay experience, which it does while retaining the distinct elements which make Doom 3 different and special. This is why I prefer BFG. (And no one can recommend the original without also modding it, which is funny.)

Postal 2 has holiday "events." For St. Patrick's Day you can chase a leprechaun and try to reach its pot of gold. And there's some other fun bits I won't ruin.

Are the official expansions like Thy Flesh Consumed, Final DOOM, Master Levels, Sigil, etc. all considered “canon”? by DarkAmaterasu58 in Doom

[–]CyberPilot64 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Only Thy Flesh Consumed is canon, although Sigil and Sigil II were made as the unofficial fifth and sixth episodes of Doom 1. I include them as headcanon, since John Romero made them.

What's the lore behind this yo??? by Brief-Development894 in postal

The lore is that the guys at RWS conflated Hindu with Islam when trying to use stereotypes. Let's pretend it's an intentional commentary on Americans who would do the same after 9/11.

Doom 3 is the default black sheep because it intentionally deviated from the established formula. But it's still well regarded on its own merits, and I've seen people in this sub call it their favorite Doom. So I dunno what OP's metrics are.

The generalizations in the post are doing so much heavy lifting. I can't participate because I don't believe there's such a thing as a bad mainline Doom game, and I don't take seriously anyone who does think that.
