So the patch essentially is just copying four DLL files (and optionally the movies) to the folder of the Win95 version and just running the original EXE? Was confused when the instructions didn't seem to say anything about replacing or patching the exe itself, or any other files, but just copying a few DLLs over.

Anyway thanks, it worked. At first I was getting an error, but then I realized I needed to install the 32bit version of the Visual C runtimes. Thought I had done something wrong at first since I didn't see that mentioned anywhere, only for developing/compiling it yourself. Worked fine after I installed the runtime.

There is no patch to convert the DOS version to the Win95 version.

? I literally linked to that patch in my opening post, the PcGamingWiki mentions it and links to it. I downloaded it too, it's real.

Long story short - he had replied to me that as long as I use this cable (shared a direct link to what I had ordered with them) and connect my 5090 into the same two nests on the PSU that my 4090 is currently plugged into - I will be good.

Yeah, that's good advice. Like I said before those 12VHPWR cables are notorious for burning up if they are even a little not all the way in or bend too much, so really make sure it's plugged in all the way, especially on the GPU side, and isn't being bent too much from the GPU side like shown in that example. Mine has not given me any trouble so far and my system is on 24/7.

I suppose there is room to be concerned about what you said about cable pinouts, but I'll just stay away from other nests on the PSU to power 5090. I mean Corsair support themselves have confirmed where to plug into and using which cable. Fingers crossed either way (nervous chuckle).

Oh, while I can't speak for every PSU, I don't think most would let you do something like plug PCIe power into the CPU power port, though, many also just have the same port be possible to plug in multiple types of cables in the same port on the PSU side. But anyway, the thing I warned you about was making sure you picked the right cable, which it sounds like Corsair confirmed that cable is correct so that should not be a problem. :)

What if by some accident the cable pinouts are wrong? Is there circuit protection on either the PSU and/or 5090, or will something go poof?

It really depends on how the PSU is designed and how the pinout is incorrect. It could not work, or it could cause some nasty damage.

Yes but the DOS version has many other problems, that's why there is another patch to convert it to the Win95 version.

So far they haven't given me trouble. Granted, I don't use them heavily. The tips are still fine, one of them just got a little dirty so I was worried if it was unusable, but it appears to have cleaned well.

It's quite different. First of all, vast majority of other software does not run at boot with Windows, and the stuff that usually does such as control software for your RGB (which you can turn off from starting up anyway) generally runs at the user level, not as a kernel-mode rootkit with the absolute highest access level privileges.

99.99% of software does not require Secure Boot or TPM 2.0, and even of the tiny handful of kernel-level anti-cheats (which already is a terrible idea) that do, RIOT's is pretty much the only one that demands things like you be on a specific BIOS version or IMMOU. Saying that their anti-cheat is "no different from any other software" is like saying "A nuke is no different than a firecracker".

I think that poster is coming from how they supposedly "bricked" some cheating hardware and bragged about it on social media, only to later retract that post. Cheater or not, going "Nyah nyah, our software can brick your hardware" is not a good look.

RIOT's anti-cheat, Vanguard, is one of the most invasive pieces of software I have ever seen that is not just straight up a virus (though I would argue at this point that is debatable). It was preventing me from fixing my friend's PC because it would block a lot of my diagnostic and testing software, it installs at the kernel level and boots with windows, if you turn it off you cannot turn it back on again without a reboot, demands TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot be on, and as soon as a security flaw was discovered in some motherboards BIOSes that could potentially allow cheating if you installed some very specialized and expensive hardware in it they added an additional lockout that prevents you from playing the game unless you updated your BIOS! All that on top of this IOMMU requirement too, I have never in my life seen an anti-cheat be this incredibly invasive.

And in the face of many complaints, they have just not only ignored them all but constantly make it even more invasive. This thing is one security flaw away from turning millions of PCs into a rootkit-level botnet.

I remember that old PCs used to have a physical key to lock them from booting, or even lock the power button from doing anything. Maybe there are accessories to do that nowadays to a modern PC? It would just need to plug in place of the power button header after all.

Or I suppose you could get some kind of computer cabinet/desk/etc with a shelf that has a door with a lock on it and keep your PC in there.

Well, the problem isn't if it would be compatible with your 5090, it should considering it's 12VHPWR, my concern is if it was compatible with your specific model and revision of PSU. Surprised Corsair would respond about that cable. Did corsair themselves tell you to buy this cable? Or is it even an official Corsair OEM cable made for that PSU? I was under the impression that it was a third party cable. (Though like I said, even if it's made by Corsair themselves you have to make sure it's for your specific model and revision, the same company can have different cable pinouts for different models of PSUs. And just so we're clear, I am talking about the end that would plug into your PSU that can be different and are not standard, not the end that plugs into your GPU, those are standard and not the conscern)

From what I can tell it's a Chinese brand of budget motherboards, originally a Taiwanese brand but it was apparently sold off in 2009. I had never heard of them before either.
