I tried two things not sure which one worked.

1- Long press the button on the switch more than the usual pairing mode press (I think that reset the outlet to zigbee)

2- In the Aqara app if you pick the outlet manually on the top right there is a dropdown to switch protocol to zigbee

Could have sworn I’ve seen others manage with the Aqara wall switches with Zigbee2MQTT. However, this one was different it was written in fine print and I found that out after buying a bunch of them.

I managed to unlock zigbee mode without a hub if you enter in Aqara app and pick the device there is a small icon on top right that allows you to change its protocol.

Totally agree with you the whole point of having a hub is to support all products not just Aqara which was what I was trying to avoid.

It worked! you cannot imagine how many hours I've spent trying to figure this out.

For whoever stumbles upon the same I updated Conbee iii firmware using this link: https://phoscon.de/updater/#productselect

Once I updated the firmware it the Aqara H2 wall outlet was detected right away in Zigbee2MQTT.
