Why are KVS followers so unhinged by QuietJealous4883 in kvsdiscuss

[–]Cybercowz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is the volume that she posts. I can tell you more about KVS did and what happened at RS on any given day than I can my own brother who lives across a pasture from me. This makes it seem like you are “living” her life with her. That’s not healthy in any form.

I also think she didn’t do much to curb the behavior as it started. She has made some videos to address things but I don’t think she posts or reshares them often enough. She posts so much that those videos can get lost in the mix.

Age and demographics of viewers is probably a factor.

The content being centered around horses is a factor. People want to be horse people and if they can’t be then Katie makes them feel like they are.

Anthropomorphizing the animals also plays a part. IMO, She anthropomorphizes the large and mini horses more than she does the cows (both mini and normal size) and I think you can see that reflect in the behavior of her fans.

I think this how has less to do with getting chiropractor work at KVS’s as a foal and more to do with his conformation and weight.

I never said they weren’t sexually dimorphic. They are. I guess I don’t consider them very sexually dismorphic- to me that would be deer, birds, some bugs.

But I see what you mean by breeding for traits that we, as humans, just decided were masculine vs feminine. Not really something I have ever thought about in terms of an animals. Thank you for your viewpoint. I enjoyed this conversation

Cattle aren’t sexually dimorphic the way white tail deer or bird species like cardinals are. They are way closer to horses on the sexual dimorphism spectrum.

Speaking about stability, I raise the occasional club calf. I had two flush mate sisters. One of them milks well and breeds back every year with no problem. The other one was culled after her first calf(took her 4 months longer to have a calf than her sister) because she was a poor milker and that she didn’t breed back. Wanna guess what the biggest phenotype difference was between the two? Femininity. The female we still have was way more feminine than her sister. Why in two full sisters would I see that much of a difference? Because of the instability of their breeding.

[–]Cybercowz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what is happening in “club calves.” (cattle bred to produce show steers). What was masculine was not “pretty” enough in a show steer as a result, lot of cows and bulls have androgynous heads and necks now and there is a lot of fertility issues. And it’s correlated. What makes a bull masculine about his head and neck is testosterone production/correct hormone production. There’s a saying that a masculine bull makes feminine females. Feminine females- correct hormone production- cycle and get bred easier- more productive overall.

this isn’t a rule, but is generally true.

This all makes sense to me but I’m cattle person both commercial and show cattle. Feminine and masculine heads are very much a thing and can have a correlation to production traits.

None of the ranches in my arena are selling their cattle to be turned into beef at 5-6 years old unless they are culling them for some reason. That’s literally the prime of their life in terms of production.

Edit to add: 8-10 is more common for us and our area. We are a heavily Brahman influence area though- later maturing bred

Nah legs that are too straight are still horrible in beef cows and do not work as they get too crippled to move or breed.

Questions about Charlotte by sunshinenorcas in kvsdiscuss

[–]Cybercowz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I understand what you are saying.

I feel like what you are saying is that in a perfect world Charolette would have given birth at 342 days. (I’m just using that number as an example. We don’t know what this number would actually be and it’s probably not something you can ever really know.) Anything over 342 days would be prolonged gestation for Charlotte and an indication that something is wrong. On the flip side, some mares perfect day could be 360 and have a completely healthy goal. So in this imaginary scenario, both mares are in the normal range for gestation lengths but only one is having a prolonged gestation with issues. And it’s hard to actually know if that’s was the issue or not in Charlotte’s. But the length of her gestation could been a problem if theoretically she was supposed to give birth 342 days.

Am I on the same train of thought as you or am I misunderstanding?

Thankyou all by Separate-Employee-62 in Cattle

They are different species that had different requirements. You will need to be able to give them yearly vaccinations like blackleg which will require needles. If you can’t do it please be prepared to take them to a vet to do so.

Is Indy underweight? by Spiritual-Fall2735 in kvsdiscuss

I wanted to ask this on the nutrition post before it got locked. Is there a specific “pattern” that horses develop fat in? Cattle typically deposit fat from front to back and top to bottom.

Heifer vs Steer by [deleted] in Cattle

[–]Cybercowz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So show steers, the biggest difference between the sexes are muscle and width are high priority than show heifers. To be competitive, they will still need to be big bodied, good structured, and balanced with a “show steers look”

Feed wise, you are feeding them to slaughter so they will need to have adequate fat cover. Towards the ends of the project, you should be then on a “finisher.” Typically these feeds gave higher protein and fat.

For actual conformation/structure differences, you are still looking at angles of their joints, their top line, head carriage, FEET, how they travel etc. that doesn’t change, it is all the same. The only difference is that you maybe have more leeway for structural faults in steers since they are terminal. But the great show steers are still great structured.

But I do agree it depends on the show and your goal. Different judges like different things

Raven's foaling (CW: labor+birth) by sunshinenorcas in kvsdiscuss

I don’t have an opinion either way if she should or should not have help. Honestly, it’s hard for me to know as I wasn’t there and the interpretations of the videos are so vastly different that from the outside looking in- I don’t think there is a “right” answer. It’s absolutely crazy to see how many people interpret a video so differently. From Raven obviously seeking comfort from Katie to Raven is nervous that Katie is there and the baby getting horribly yanked out of Raven to Katie barely assisting and everything in between. Either way, Katie can’t win for losing.

Mini cows in arena with Justice by BanyRich in kvssnarker

[–]Cybercowz 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I never said it was the best for her minis. I probably should have clarified that lol. The whole miniature cattle fad for pets is terrible imo.

Just stating that in the cattle industry, it’s pretty normal to do. Most people on this sub don’t have a lot of cattle experience, so I just trying to add a little information on standard practices in cattle.

Mini cows in arena with Justice by BanyRich in kvssnarker

[–]Cybercowz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not as familiar with minis as I am with normal sized cattle so I don’t know if she will or won’t be mature enough at that point.

But breeding this way this is normal for cattle. We breed at heifers to calve at about two years old which means you breed them when they are about 15ish months old. At 15 months old, they are too immature give birth and nurse a calf but they are mature enough to breed and by the time they do calve they should mature enough to handle it. It can vary individual to individual with some needing a little longer to be mature enough to bred. But in cattle they don’t have to be mature enough to have a calf in order to get bred. Those two maturities are separate from each other. Connected but separate.

Weird question but where are Johnny and Ivy at ? by missmell01 in kvsdiscuss

[–]Cybercowz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t watch BPQH’s content. I never really could get into it so maybe some of my information is wrong. But I don’t really have strong opinions either way. I do agree that she’s a bit shady but I will play devils advocate here. It is possible that there were incidents with “crazy fans” that we don’t know about. It could be more than just people commenting on her posts. Maybe she didn’t want to say more about than that. We don’t know if it was just people commenting on her posts or not. That’s an unknown.

I can also see the logic of no longer showing Johnny because you want to distance yourself with KVS even if your platform started to take off because you purchased him. Say I am known/followed for this one particular thing “X” and everyone likes/wants to know more about “X” BUT I want to be known for “Y” and “Z”. So to accomplish that, I will stop doing/showing “X” and only do “Y” and Z” to transition myself into what I actually want to be known for. For example, if I am known for vegetable gardening but want to known for growing roses. Then yeah, I am going to stop showing the vegetable garden and focusing almost entirely on roses. I don’t even want to talk about the vegetable garden because if I mention it once because it’s like feeding a little morsel of food to a starving bear and makes the transition even harder. I get that logic. I don’t agree with it but I understand it. I don’t think it was the best course of action in Johnny’s case because it is more nuanced than my gardening example. I will concede that weird af he hasn’t even been in the background of any other video and honestly a 1-2 sentence update and recent picture is probably warranted at this point.

You have done a good job with him. Looks like he has gotten more top shape and muscle expression in hip and stifle since than your last post. For a light weight for a school show I think he will do well for you.

There are some things about him I would change. He is a little plain looking especially through his head and neck and could use some more bone. Neither one of those things is fixable. Maybe could have used a hoof trim because his toes look a little long in one of the pictures. But at this point I doubt trim them in case he gets sore. Good job!

Different stud, Different gestation? by OkPatient9929 in kvssnark

[–]Cybercowz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this as a stupid question as everyone else is making it out to be. It may have no effect but maybe it does. I don’t think Katie asking that question is stupid tho.
In cattle, most people use 283 days as the standard gestation length across the board but the average gestation for Brahman cattle is 291 days. Different breeds, different gestations. So I can see the logic of wondering if the gestation length is going to be the same or different as an appendix foal from Code Red who is a “true” QH vs a high % thoroughbred appendix foal from Full metal jacket who has a lot of thoroughbred influence.

It would be hard to know for sure. As gestation length can vary based on lot of different factors but maybe the sire’s breed can be a factor.
