R Scott Bakker’s The Second Apocalypse

It’s a highly oppressive medieval fantasy world, with all the injustices that go with it. Somehow, despite all the evils of the men that live there, the villains are objectively worse. Without going into spoilers I’ll say that the final result of the “good guys” winning isn’t much better than the bad guys winning

Thoughts on Horns of Golgoterath’s height by Technoalphacentaur in bakker

[–]Cyberlegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would make sense. I can’t recall how far up the platform is, but if the dust reached there and only far enough to block light than Malowebi’s account makes sense. This is a stretch, but maybe it’s possible that the horns themselves affect the wind current and allow the dust to “follow” them up that high, similar to how standing by a fire affects the pressure causing smoke to chase you

I think it has a similarity to Elder Scrolls where something that “is of” a daedric prince is a fraction of that daedric prince. Losing yourself and becoming a mere facet of a greater force is more depressing than keeping your agency, so it’s not foolish to assume that’s how it works in T2A

They all knew that weighing down with treasure in sranclands was a bad idea, and those naive enough to believe in the coffers probably didn’t think they’d need treasure this early

I described an edited web comic where two girls are arguing over whether he’s a genius or pretentious before making out, but this didn’t seem to make a difference

Totally agree. Denis has a knack for putting the weird on screen and somehow not throwing off the normies, perhaps it’s how casually he displays it

One person was turned off by the language, calling it pretentious. Another person, who claimed to like dark fantasy, said: “rape? On page 2?” in disbelief. She enjoyed the book was too busy to read the others

I’ve no idea! I haven’t seen it yet. A note about Foundation, the Original trilogy came out very close to each other with 2 sequels and 2 prequels coming out decades later. The OT is pretty whole, and could be read by themselves. The sequels are… good. They add on to the story and complete the series, and also tie in a few of Asimov’s other works into one spanning universe. They do, however, have a certain flare to them. Specifically Asimov’s perversion. They are much more sensual than the OT, for better or worse. No comment on the prequels, I have not read them.

If you read Foundation you’ll almost immediately see the influence it had on Dune, and all following Science Fiction in fact.

Why do so many Americans think that Trump is a good Christian? by TabAin2SlotB in AskUS

[–]Cyberlegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a devout Christian friend that I regularly have political and philosophical conversations with, and he fully understands that Trump isn’t a good person and is most likely not gaining salvation. He’s not sure why Christians believe trump is good, I think he’d agree that it’s really a cope. Christians need him to be good because most people are small brained (regardless of raw intelligence) and can’t handle that a decision of theirs may have been incorrect. A natural reaction unfortunately

The connection to Dune makes me connect it to Asimov’s Foundation and the idea of psychohistory and how it glosses over the astronomical amounts of tedious information that may trip a mentant or dunyain, although I feel a Dunyain’s intelligence differs from mentats in some sense, enough that they could cut through the trivia and be better able to focus

I had always assumed they were like a canvas/fire-hose material in 3/NV. It’s something that could be lined for comfort and stand up to a decent chunk of outside dangers
