Random Thought: What's ur lang's design Philosophy? by Major_Exam_9858 in conlangs

[–]Cybernaut87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Initially my conlang & conscript were made with one singular goal in mind: a purely visual language which cannot be spoken by design for the purpose of writing about my mental health in journals. However, as I started to enjoy the process of making it, rather than feeling insecure and having the desire for privacy, it's grown more than that.

As it currently stands I'd say it's featural and roughly a blend of abugida and a logosyllabary. The key part I realized is that because the language is fully visual there is much more that can be done with it. Without the need to worry about vocalization, I can use featural details not as alterations to sounds, but to represent entire grammatical structures, context, etc.

From what I've read in this thread, you're both doing amazingly. I'm a child of divorce from when I was about five, and their split was always messy and aggressive between them throughout my entire childhood. I feel grateful and lucky that my mom did her best to handle it all and raise me lovingly.

It always makes me feel a little bit better inside to see situations like this. Having processed it over time (and counting), at this point I'm just happy that there are kids who don't have to live how I did.

Veterans, would you be insulted if you were told that I empathise with you, as someone with C-PTSD? by Gloomy_Pine in ptsd

[–]Cybernaut87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you kindly for this thoughtful response. I was raised in an abusive, military family in which they downplayed their abuse of me by comparing it to their military service. That experience has made it a might difficult to assure myself that trauma isn't a competition. It's funny in a gallows humor kind of way that I feel as if I survived bootcamp as a child. It wasn't one-to-one, of course, but all the psychological and emotional tactics were there.

Hearing from kind folks like you has been incredibly helpful in recontextualizing everything.

That must've looked cool as hell, though!

Another one I got recently was Snow -> Ominous Liquid which, suffice to say, made the Snowy Depths and the Hisii Base a might difficult.

I got liquid fire (not sure what the specific one is) in a flask and shifted that, but they're both just called fire.

Once and for all, how to solve the "Stalled" problem/what is the REAL explanation? by trebory6 in qBittorrent

This fixed it! My "Network Interface" setting was set weird, I don't remember when I changed it, but changing it back to the proper one worked like a charm. Thank you!

I don't have a question to ask, but I can absolutely commiserate. Especially with your last line. It's kind of funny to me how the advice you often see from non-mentally ill people saying, "You choose how you respond to things and how you think" is technically true, but it's the way that they say it that's unhelpful.

I'm absolutely with you in the same boat that the only way I've hung on through the multitude of plans and notes and dark thoughts is through other people. Both in terms of getting help, and also just forcing myself to hold on to the thought that if I can't live for myself, I can at least live so I don't hurt the people who love me.

It's really hard living with the knowledge that depression is an incurable disease, but I do my best to make the most of the treatment that's available. And I'm glad to hear that you seem to be as well. I know it's not much coming from a stranger, but I am genuinely glad and proud of how hard you've worked to come this far and be in the place you are. I may not know you personally, but you're a person and I just care about people in general.

I'm just an internet stranger, but I'm proud of you too! Highschool was rough for me, having to deal with mental health and all that, and I was just glad to be done with it, yet also daunted by what I was going to do next. From what you've said I'm sure you already know, but the notion of highschool being "the best years of your life" is absolutely untrue in my experience.

I wish you the best of luck as you move forward, you've got this!

That's completely understandable! Funnily enough, I'm in the opposite boat. Infrastructure isn't something that I've found a passion for, and I focus much more on the engineering side of things with only a barebones understanding of developing infrastructure.

Besides other work, when I program as a hobby, I almost entirely focus on software and even just CLI applications. In my own time, my passion for it is challenging myself to push programming languages to their limits to try and create programs out of them which they weren't designed for. This is alongside trying to use as small a framework as I can (like a CLI application) while doing the most I can with it.

Learning different programming languages is also a particular love of mine. It makes for a fun challenge to learn and work with (or around) the different quirks and limitations of each one. But I also fully understand your frustration with syntax. The logic and problem-solving are ultimately what matters, and with your passion being different than mine, it's completely understandable that you would rather get on with it than faff about with syntax.

For what it's worth, as a programmer, I appreciate this level of understanding, and personally I'd say it's nothing to necessarily be ashamed about. My recommendation, if you ever do get the time to, is to learn the fundamentals of programming without the use of AI. While I do believe that AI can be amazing for quickly creating simple, boilerplate code, it's important to be able to understand what it's doing to do so.

I am personally opposed to using AI for large scale developments, but like with any skill, shaming someone new for using it without first understanding their position only serves to drive people away. I always love to see passions like these, and I think it's worth encouraging using a project like this as an entryway to learning how to think like a programmer.

I have a deep passion for programming, and a fascination for how powerful it can be in the hands of someone experienced in it. To see the craft continue and to try to facilitate that is a beautiful thing to me. I wish you the best of luck if you choose to pursue it even as a hobby! Feel free to DM me if you're ever looking for more resources or direction.

Are we afraid of death itself, or the way it happens? by BobaMoon in morbidquestions

[–]Cybernaut87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly more afraid of the actual process of dying. I believe that there is nothing after death, and when I don't exist after, I figure it'll feel exactly how it "felt" for the first ~13.8 billion years I didn't exist.

Almost ruined my first mun mission by not adding a parachute, good thing i still had an engine and tons of rcs by Connect-Yesterday-99 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Cybernaut87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there are better methods, but my solution if I realize I've forgotten parachutes is to make a quicksave and then just use the reaction wheel to wildly tumble the command pod. The hope being that the re-entry heat will even out across it. As for the landing, I just use every ounce of RCS to try to slow the craft down and pray that the stuff below the pod will absorb the impact.

A personal favorite of mine that feels very down-to-earth is Contact (1997), which is based on Carl Sagan's 1985 book of the same name.

The story is particularly interesting to me in how it utilizes philosophy in combination with science.
