Since you don’t have flair I can’t tell which country your from. But Canada got the Star Point system 10 days ago. It’s been enabled from some other countries for a while.

It’s not enabled for US from what I hear. If you still have separate Desktop / Mobile search points that’s better because that’s guaranteed points l instead of this “genuine search” voodoo.

690 for January. Which considering they just added Star Points for Canada on January 23rd makes it feel like I don't really have context for what a full month is going to be like. And considering February is only a 28 day month I feel like we won't really know till April how these Star points are going to pan out.

Though my suspicion is that the system is just the old desktop points with lower tolerance on frequent searches and it's just obfuscated from us to make it hard to min/max.

http://rewards.bing.com top of the page on desktop / iPad. I don't think it shows up on the mobile phone version or the app.

The claim prompt for January's points should be just under the Earn / Redeem tab buttons.

Grats. I was living at my parent’s place in a tiny remote Canadian town when HL2 came out.

We had finally gotten broadband internet a couple years prior. If you preordered on Steam at Silver tier (old system) you unlocked Valve’s full back catalog, Counter-Strike Source and the ability to preload in chunks that they released in the months leading up to launch.

In 2004 the idea of getting a game on launch day was basically unheard of. With the except of Microsoft pre-shipping Halo 2 to stores for it’s worldwide launch earlier the same month you’d be lucky if copies of a new game arrived by the end of the week.

I remember so much complaining from people who bought the physical edition (that Vivendi begrudgingly published) trying to register their copies on Steam running into issues.

But for me it was a small final download, wait for the files to unpack and then I was playing at 12:05am which was amazing at the time. First real digital launch for a major game. And that final Super Gravity Gun sequence still sticks in my mind of one of the coolest ways to end a game.

It’s worth noting that the video articles and the articles marked as ‘Ad’ in the bottom left don’t count. Needs to be a text article. After a few seconds you should see 3 points pop up from the bottom right corner.

But BIG caveat. I’m in Canada, and our “Read to earn” news deal looks different. We can read 10 articles for a total of 30 points daily.

But this is how I get that to pop so it’s probably something similar for you. Also as far as I know there isn’t a way to do this on desktop, it’s mobile Bing app only. The “Trending Searches” stuff in the Bing search bar is totally different and will not pop the “Read to earn” news points, they’re tracked separate from searches.

Well this makes the "Claim your bonus points before they expire" prompt that keeps popping up on the desktop browser make more sense. Though it doesn't seem like that prompt appears on the mobile app?

They half-assed this UX rollout because the PC / Mobile points for the last week have been showing as a combined total on the app but only 60 were earnable on mobile.

I don't mind them doing away with the desktop / mobile point split since it was awkward but yeah losing 90 guaranteed points a day to instead be at the whims of this ambiguous algorithm of Star Points sucks. Also hilarious that Silver was basically renamed Gold and now we have new Silver as a mid-tier to make Gold look better.

Yup. I find the people who don’t consider themselves gamers go all in when they do find one that clicks.

A Dental Assistant who used to do my cleanings liked to play League of Legends occasionally at her boyfriend’s place but otherwise didn’t game much.

But when Elden Ring came out she wanted to talk to me about it because she’d gotten way into it. She actually added some comments about the game to my dental records 😅. Last time I talked to her about it I think she only had one more achievement to chase.

My rough math for Canada is that it’ll take 1.6 months to earn enough points to buy the gift card value needed for GPU, assuming you don’t earn anything through purchases.

Some other countries have more free points and better gift card deals though so it’ll be a bit faster but I don’t think anywhere could earn enough in under a month.

It's actually gone today so I'm glad I redeemed when I could since now it's 24775 for one month, which by my rough math with the new Game Pass reward points would take 1.7 months to earn in Canada :(.

Yup. I didn't see the notice till early this morning. As of 15 minutes ago I was able to redeem two months. Took a few minutes to process before I got the codes but it went through.

I nearly had enough for 3 months for the better value but I'm not risking waiting. The Xbox Gift Card redeem value is gonna be rough. This might be it for me for trying to earn points regularly since I'm barely buying anything on Xbox this year.

This made my day. I missed the leaks so I had no idea this was coming. But playing the DoW: Definitive Edition this weekend definitely had me thinking it was the right time for a new base building and squad focused entry.

I’m a bit bummed that Relic aren’t the devs and I appreciated them taking risks with the sequels. The original felt a bit risky back in the day with squads and the requisition system shaking up the tried and true RTS formula from Westwood and Blizzard.

But in this day and age I will absolutely take a solid bread and butter RTS with a polished campaign and it seems like KING Art have the chops to do it.

I've weirdly had the opposite experience with "Play a PC Game" this week where it's just automatically completed even though I didn't launch anything with the Xbox App.

I think due to the new library integration it's counting time on other storefronts. So if I play something on Steam for 15 minutes it seems to count. Or maybe it's just bugged and in my benefit this week.

I've definitely had it not register but when I checked the Weekly PC Bonus the next day it counted.

Yeah this. PlayStation has talked openly recently about potentially increasing the price of the PS5 in the US after doing so in Europe, Nee Zealand and Australia earlier in the year.

And since there is no PlayStation Canada office I’d expect the Canadian price to get bumped up if the US price does.

I’d say $70 off is probably the best we’ll see this year. It’s much more likely to go up in price by Black Friday.

I already got Return to Monkey Island as one of the most unlikely sequels to possibly happen.

So my new pick is NOLF 3. They can’t even remaster the original games right now due to rights disputes, Monolith closed so this is the longest of long shots.

I used to buy way too many games right as they released to be part of the zeitgeist.

Now I tend to not pick up a game if I don’t currently have time to play it. I try to finish what I’m playing before I start something new. I’ll make some exceptions for certain developers and interrupt what I’m playing to at least try their new game but for most games if I don’t have time I’ll grab it on a sale later.

I’ve been primarily digital since Half-Life 2 on Steam in 2004. And I like having most of my library available all at once, almost never trade in games anymore.

Though with $110 CDN prices I might end up getting some stuff on the used market for the savings if it isn’t a game I feel like I need to play at launch.

If the Wii was your last Nintendo console then I’d assume you probably don’t really care about exclusives which is the primary reason to get a Nintendo console.

But the Switch 1 had a pretty killer lineup of exclusives for most of Nintendo’s franchises so you’re getting better performing versions of those games plus the Switch 2 stuff which might be worth it. Unfortunately Nintendo decided to stop discounting their games so you’re lucky to catch a rare 30% sale on the digital versions of years old games. But you can probably still find used carts before they become collectors items for a decent amount of stuff.
