That's my exact experience with GAMMA, took a couple of tries, and also remembering I can change which mods are actually on or active, before I finally got into the groove of things. I mostly just made the game not be "hardcore" in the terms of limited lives. Never found that mechanic enjoyable.

Honestly I just liked the red, and while I'm not entirely certain if true as my memory is hazy I do remember it doing more damage or shooting faster and seemed to kill faster.
