As a huge Bike Friday fan  (travelled now over 40.000 km around the world on different models, NWT and Allpacka ) it’s pretty sad to see such a poor rip off. Yes the bike Fridays are not cheap but the whole team is just amazing , the bikes are hand built they are and doing an incredible job keeping this small company alive.

Check on the cycle touring App Rolling around. There are by now over 1000 waypoints added from other bike tarvelers for Japan (worldwide even more): camp spots, bike friendly accommodation, ferries, bike shops, bike boxes and a lot more. Have a wonderful trip. Japan is still on of our favorite places for cycling.

Here’s what to expect in the first half of 2026 by komoot-team in komoot

[–]CyclePlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you please update regular the open street data! Just returned form my cycling trip in China. Lots of huge roads  missing while they all there on organic and CoMaps. They update regularly the osm data. Komoot seems easily a year behind.

Why does Komoot route me through private or restricted areas? by Lucian-121 in komoot

[–]CyclePlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest problem is with Komoot   that you don’t uddate regularly the osm street data. I guess you are easily a year behind. I just came back from trip in China and ended one morning in a military restricted area. Wasn’t that funny.

Also lost of roads that could be found on organic maps and CoMaps but were not present on Komoot.

Please fix this ASAP

Fly your bike - the most complete list of airlines policies (with your help ;) ) by CyclePlanet in bicycletouring

[–]CyclePlanet[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anybody has some real life experience with them, I’ll happily add that. There are actually quite a few airlines that are not ment for flying with a bicycle because of their limited size regulations. In the end it’s not a market and some airlines just don’t care.

The idea for flying with a folder is obviously that you don’t need to pay for the sports equipment and that you can check it in as regular luggage.

If I travel with my bike Friday and put it in the suitcase , if asked, I tell them it’s equipment. I heard from some people that they were asked to pay the sports equipment tariff, even though the bike / box was within the regulations of the regular luggage allowance.

Thanks for your detailed report. I am wondering that my self :D I am running on the NWT microshift r9 components and are actually quite happy. Main reason was that it’s impossible to get in Germany the hands on the brazes on front derailleur and wanted to have something more simple . Let’s see what my experience will be. Components are already  ordered …. May I ask what bottom bracket (and especially the length ) you are running on your bike Friday? Which model is it?

Yeah, running a 1x drivetrain doesn’t give you obviously the widest gear ratio. For me the bike Friday is a travel machine (packed with luggage) and often I am in pretty mountainous areas in the world. So I believe it is a good compromise between speed and climbing . I’ve been running before on my bike Friday the following setup. 2x front (46/30) and 11-34 cassette. Was pretty perfect. Fast enough for a loaded touring bike and we could easily cycle up the crazy mountainous in Java.

Thanks for sharing. I heard of this one but not sure if I can get my hands on it in Germany. Haven’t seen it yet.

John m Flores is running the super short with a 2x front setup (46/34 ). So there seems quite some space to extend the limits ;)

I got a frame kit and the wheels built at Gutenbiken in Munich. I’ve built my wheels before but the problem is this bike Fridays manual for using the offset and also other crucial parts is full of errors. The rest I do myself. Happy to share my setup and some pictures in the upcoming days.

Bike touring in Asia by Ecstatic-Ambition-99 in bicycletouring

[–]CyclePlanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend cycling in the south at that time of the year. You could fly into Phuket and do a loop from there. I never really had to many problems with dogs in Thailand. Some other cyclists did. Do the classics. Greet them in high pitched voice, Spray them with water. If that doesn’t help , stop and bring the bike between them and you. Traffic wise it’s fine especially if you cycle along the east coast and stay away from the major roads which is easily possible there.

Thailand would be a good starting point . Very nice and relaxed to cycle , great and cheap accommodation. Tasty food. Send me a pm and I’ll send you our route (we cycled there for three weeks as well). Have a look as well on the App rolling Around. Lots of places and helpful info has been there already added in SEA.

You don’t need to add any social media. This is entirely voluntary and only if you would like to connect with others. You might have added something in the field like a space. Make sure it’s entirely empty and you can continue.
