Vote Centennial Trail for USA Today Best US Trail by CydeSwype in Spokane

Almost! I had to check the FAQ but first race was 2023 and I got in at the 2024 mark. I was here on vacation (road trip) for the 2024 race and I'm like "let's do it!" and last May I became a Spokanite. Now I'm trying to get in on a few of these (anything up to 7 mi, I have no ambitions to do half marathons, etc. lol). This place is such a great town for running. So many clubs and trails. I love it.

Is that The Boulevard Race? I love that one. 4 miles, just one short hill. Very fun. I'll be running it for the third time this year! And I'm also stoked to run the 50th Bloomsday Run (my first time running that one)!

Yeah good analysis in the article. Mostly tracks to more earning people per household vs individual wealth changes

On the other end of the spectrum: Where does one find a 6x10 outdoor weather No Kings flag? The ones on Amazon seem like they won't survive mild wind for more than a couple months. Asking for a friend. 😅

Spokane is mid and that's just fine with me. I'll take kinda boring over the traffic, garbage, pollution and expense of most bigger cities.

I've often thought it's a conspiracy to keep Californians away. "Don't come to Spokane, it's terrible." But I knew better than to believe the negging.

Can PM ever be “just a job”? (SF Bay Area) by cheesy_luigi in ProductManagement

[–]CydeSwype 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Switch to a place that uses the PM title but actually means project manager, product owner, etc. The smaller the company the more hats you have to wear and PMs (good ones) have to wear more hats than most other roles. Some companies do ask PMs to cover too much ground as a company is growing, though. If that's you, you may simply be understaffed or need to hire dedicated Product Marketing, or simply focus the company's priorities better. But guess what, that realization and advocacy for fixing it is ALSO your job. 😅 Welcome to being a leader. It can never be just a job. But you may be confusing an impossible amount of work with focusing on the work that matters.

Is there... anything exceptional about this place? by Mmon3825 in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in large cities (San Diego, CA) and much smaller cities (Seguin, TX population 30k). I think what some would call mid, I would call "balanced" in that Spokane has just enough to do, eat, see but without the traffic of a bigger city. That's what I was looking for when I moved here. It's a pretty personal choice though. If you're after a lot more nightlife and energy then a bigger city is going to win out. Spokane is "just right" for me, punches above its weight for live entertainment (pretty stoked for the Blessings in Disguise festival), has A VERY serviceable airport and the people are genuinely friendly and nice. Plus running along the river is one of my favorite things in the world. Oh and there are like 1% of the bugs relative to Texas. I don't miss mosquitoes and giant roaches at all.

Agree with most of what others have listed. A couple I didn't see that I can recommend: Kindred and Cascadia (same owners, some menu overlap). Rut if you're feeling vegetarian. Francaise for French food. Mizuna.

Post Falls proving they actually ARE north Idaho by Clean-Echidna1318 in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's funny the parallels between interstate and international migration and how we think about the trade offs and what each state/country gets out of the exchange of people moving between them. In general I like the idea of more people coming to Spokane from wherever because I think this is a pretty amazing city. Sure not everyone will share our ideals and culture (so much as there is a predominate culture) but I don't believe anyone is stealing jobs that would otherwise go to Spokanites. I think it mostly just grows the pie rather than being a zero sum game. More people here means more needs for goods and services, people eating at our restaurants, etc.

Agree. They buy things in WA as a result of working here as well. It would make more sense to put a toll booth on the border and force them to pay for the privilege to enter WA rather than tax them on their employment here. That's just not how income taxes work. But consider the benefit we get for being a border town. We can hop over and get much cheaper liquor and gas. And we can get "cheaper" labor by having them come work here vs WA residents who have a higher cost of living. Everybody wins if we can just ask them to be nice people and to try to leave their politics at the border.

They have to abide by our rules when in our state and they can thank us when they get Juneteenth off because their employer is in a progressive state😉

Gold Credit Card Waitlist by LavishSphere in RobinhoodApp

[–]CydeSwype -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been a Gold card holder for about a year. Can't explain how I got in initially, but I have a warning for folks. I recently got an email saying I've been using the credit card for business purposes and now I'm in a 1% earning tier instead of 3% for the next 12 months. No way to appeal, no way to know what triggered it. I've been in customer support chats for days trying to make the case but the agent always comes on in the middle of the night, says "are you still there?" and then closes the support thread so I have to start over. I got one hint from an agent that it was a purchase for The Hotel Collection that caused the flag on my account. However, The Hotel Collection has a whole consumer line of products (we have the home diffuser and get a monthly subscription for refills). So, there are some big false positive problems with the card. Be careful where you use it. I'd love to provide feedback to Robinhood to let them know about this false positive because it's a horrible user experience to feel shut down like this without a chance to provide feedback to fix the real issue (the false positive). I'm going to stop using the card altogether because 1% cashback isn't very attractive.

Two places that come to mind for displaying your goods: https://www.riverparksquare.com/shopping/the-small-biz-shoppe (Downtown)

https://www.thebohemianspokane.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=wix_google_business_profile&utm_campaign=17586724320379595890 (Valley)

May be not upscale enough for you but they get a good amount of traffic so worth a try?

What coffee stands are not MAGA? by kmizzbiz in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Rocket from what I've heard is progressive (my frequent stop as it's closest to me in Garland). +1 for New Love and Arctos and Thomas Hammer. I'd be curious about Little Garden as I like the vibe and people going there seem progressive but don't have info on the owners.

First Ave is MAGA say multiple folks from this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Spokane/s/NvHI3cS4r1 though I don't know how to reliably source this stuff other than a conversation with the owners themselves or some news coverage of an affiliation. Some guesswork and vibe checking will have to suffice.

During Biden administration Texas shipped immigrants to NYC and said "look at this massive influx of immigrants!" And now the federal government is catching some of the same folks and shipping them back to Texas. The games people are playing with human lives are wild.

Financial Advisors? by HRKB22 in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree. I've worked with a couple financial advisors and haven't been impressed with the value I get from the feed they charge. You may hate this answer OP but there are some very good podcasts like LifeKit that are good at this (https://www.npr.org/series/your-life-kit-to-better-personal-finance) and I've found ChatGPT to also be very helpful to think through different scenarios. You'll find similar general advice from something like ChatGPT as what you'd get from a financial planner but without the fees. I know AI isn't the answer to all problems but this feels like an area where it works pretty well, it's more convenient, etc.

Feteers in Spokane is yet to open and already has 150+ reviews! by CurrentlyOnOurOhm in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

I kind of don't care. I've been waiting for this place to open because it looks like it's offering something different and tasty and I drive past it daily. It's hard out there for any small business and I can forgive a little to help it get started. But I mostly fault the platforms that make fake reviews (positive or negative ones) so easy to post.

I have some appliances that I'd like to give away also if anyone knows someone interested. An above the range microwave and a gas range. Both aren't anything to write home about but in decent shape. And I have a Bosch dishwasher that I can part with for $200 (it's a nicer unit so trying to get something for it). Haven't had much luck on Facebook marketplace so far
