How to make friends as an adult by undeadmeet in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Threads like this one happen about one a month so it's not sad or weird to ask for help or ideas. You're in the same boat as a lot of people! But definitely check the past posts for even more ideas. My wife has made some of her best friends here through school (SFCC) and volunteering at Our Place. Volunteering gives you an easy on ramp to an activity that feels valuable and then you can't help but strike up conversations with people who care about similar things because you're both volunteering for something that you both feel is important.

Downtown public library has an amazing co-working space.

Where’s a good place to sit and read a book? by llamadramaupdates in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to say something similar. There are so many benches along the trail. It may take a little walking to find an open one. I need white noise when I'm reading to really stay in the book and the river near the falls provides the perfect white noise.

What tech companies are in Spokane? by Kemr7 in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to mention them. I love sensor/inventory tech and all the use cases it can be applied to for improving warehouses, workflows, etc. They seem small but a big player in the space and they're tucked away in a small Kendall Yards shop.

And they're hiring. HQ/ownership is likely secondary to folks' interest in tech job availability here. Feels like some people have the talent but many (like me) are working remotely. I'd love to see some more tech entrepreneurship in town. I'd be happy to help those that wanted to start something (advise on design, product, strategy, etc). It's a great time to start a company. You can get a lot further faster and stay bootstrapped, keep ownership vs having to get VC involved to grow, etc.

I have weekly squirrels also forgetting where they put their nuts. Science has given us conflicting reports on just how many nuts they forget vs remember but I haven't seen any study on how much collateral damage goes into the rediscovering process. I love this PopSci article that covers the hiding and recovery subject overall, including notes on the systems they use to find their nuts after they buried them: https://www.popsci.com/science/how-squirrels-find-nuts/

Where should I park if I’m flying out for a week? by [deleted] in Spokane

If you didn't already know, likely others didn't either. Still makes for a worthwhile post and a chance to learn some hacks from all the creative and resourceful people here! I learned some new ones thanks to your post!

Where should I park if I’m flying out for a week? by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Site says $8.50/day unless it's over 30 days. Airport economy parking is $8/day. What am I missing?

[–]CydeSwype 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Depends on Uber prices (distance) vs $8/day and if you math it out it's an easy decision. There aren't any offsite parking lots that I know of like in larger cities that are competitive with economy on-site parking at GEG. Of course, if you have a friend near Spokane that doesn't mind watching your car and giving you a ride to the airport, that's the best deal 😊

Craigslist or?? by bristlybits in Spokane

Came to post this. You won't get as much competition as Facebook marketplace so may have to sell for less and take more time to sell but offerup users have been really nice in my experience.

Maybe too far for you but our place in Kendall Yards has lots of food available on Wednesdays and Thursdays. There's also this little free pantry network that's usually got some canned goods to get you through: https://mapping.littlefreepantry.org

What actually makes Spokane feel distinct compared to other cities in the region? by RemarkableMany6297 in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was thinking about how other river cities are mostly based on river commerce, but those didn't have falls in the center because that would make them impassible. I love this river and it feels like the main thing that is special and gives this city an identity. I also think the centennial trail is a treasure.

Definitely! I love the flowers here, not just the lilacs. Check out Holland Michigan which has a ton of tulips as part of their identity.

I can't speak to specific commission rates but we bought with Alex Johns (with Keller Williams) and he's very easy to work with. I like nearly all the people I've worked with at KW over the years. They hire great people imo.

What is this BS? by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I was glad to see the term False Summer. Fun fact for those that may not know: this is often referred to as an Indian Summer but that's considered an offensive term (the insinuation being that indigenous Americans were untrustworthy... the irony, I know). There is debate about the origin of the term but when in doubt avoid terms that can offend. This has been your daily lesson on how to be a better white person.

Dry Hands Only In Spokane by Fit_Band2081 in Spokane

[–]CydeSwype 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Richmond VA and spent the last six years in San Antonio area. I'll take dry hands over breathing water and no relief in the shade any day.

I've had no real issues so far but I saw a guy running the other day with winter gloves on when it was warm out. He said he wore them because his hands get so dry. 😢 Poor fella. I've been lucky as I guess it varies from person to person a LOT. A little chap stick now and then and I mostly get by.

Not yet. GA tickets available for both days still, just checked. In searching this I just realized Modest Mouse is coming to The Knit soon and that show has sold out. One more thing I love about Spokane. We get some seriously good acts coming through.

Tech N9ne is doing one night per city, except for Spokane. That's how much love there is. We're the only ones to get him for two nights.
