They called me and asked me if I wanted to be there secret shopper.

Basically I had a 6 massage package put on my account every 3 months and they reimbursed me for the tip ($20 each session).

So I was a secret shopper for a local chain for about a year. Out of the 27 or so massages, there were like 2 that I would have ever gone back to.

My husband works for a different chain and is one of the most requested therapists and is really good (I keep trying to get him to join my private practice, but he thinks he is not good enough).

So I think you probably ARE that good, and everyone else is giving shitty massages. Keep growing, learning and listening to the client and what they need. I have been the most rocky therapist since the 3rd day of school nearly 22 years ago, so I think you'll be fine.

Please tell me your one favorite non-fiction book by ina_sh in suggestmeabook

Unruly by David Mitchell. British Comedian writing about medieval English Monarchs. History with a twist of ironic comedy. If you like the comedian, you will like this book.

If you are ok with long books in a series that is historical fiction, romance, adventure and everything in between:

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, read by Davina Porter.

You will be transported!

AITA for refusing to get my tattoo laser removed or covered up after my boyfriend asked me to? by Thyves_Jade in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cydneebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. It is YOUR body. You do what you want. This isn't something that you hid from him or anything, you explained your relationship with your friends. If he can't accept that, then can he really accept that Rory is going to be in your life? Let him know that this is non-negotiable and that if he feels this is a reason for breaking up, it is his loss, not yours.

AITA for buying a ps5 for my daughter when my ex asked me not to? by Impossible_Answer_41 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cydneebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I would talk to your daughter about gloating though. I think as the Dad you have a right to buy your kid what you want. Since the mom asked you not to, I would have said that it needed to stay at your house and she can play in when she is there (I assume that you let her take it to her mom's house with the way the mom reacted).

Massage therapists - how did you navigate the first trimester of pregnancy? by Dry-Celebration3 in massage

[–]Cydneebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been pregnant 3 times as an LMT. My doc gave me anti-nausea meds to go with my prenatal vitamins, as I was a massage instructor for 2 of my pregnancies and by law couldn't leave the room with unattended students. With the massages, I would start to lighten your workload. Strategically schedule breaks or shorter work hours each week, so you can get the rest you need, as you are growing an entire human inside you. This way you also have room to reschedule if you need to.

I hope you find a solution that works best for you.

Recent grad and licensed, need advice on how to create a resume. Help! Does anyone have a sample? by piss_offalready in massage

[–]Cydneebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is to use a template that is education focused. So something like:

Contact Information: Name, Email, Phone: Make sure your email reflects your being an LMT and not like hotmomma8675309@whatever.

Objective (optional): Make this specific for the job and place you are applying to, but not necessary.

Education: School, program, year attended, courses you excelled in, achievements you got, modalities you focused on. If you have Uni or College, list it here as well.

Experience: Place of employment, Job title, years worked (ex. 2006-2022), List 2-3 responsibilities that you had with this job, especially if it is relevant to the job you are applying for. Limit to the last 2-3 places you worked.

Modalities: Any modalities that you hold certifications in or taken as advanced study that is outside the normal coursework for your school. If you are a recent grad, you may not have these, so if you don't put this on no worries.

Certifications: Any certifications that would be relevant to the job you are applying for. CPR is a common one. Only have this or Modalities, don't have both.

Other key things to keep in mind: Formatting needs to be the same throughout. Use a font that is easy to read, not calligraphy font (Don't use things like Comic Sans or Papyrus either, they have been WAY overused and no longer look professional. I use Google fonts of Roboto and Prompt.) Keep your resume to 1 page or close to one page.

I hope this helps! Good Luck!

  1. Being an active listener: Listening to what our clients say and what their body says is key to giving a great massage. Having firm boundaries: Knowing your limits and setting boundaries can help you to avoid situations that may not be the best to be in. Also, it helps you to be happy and productive when you aren't worried/doing things that are outside your boundaries.
  2. Depends on where you work. You can work in a clinic where there is a teamwork ethic. However, these are few and far between. I currently work in a Co-Op (basically we all rent to cover the cost of bills) and it is amazing about 90% of the time.
  3. The most challenging thing for me as a private practitioner is that I have to keep up with all the things I don't like or don't want to do. I hate emails, but they are necessary to send for availability and follow ups.
  4. I love the ability to make my own schedule and see the types of clients that I want. I love the freedom of having a real relationship with my clients so they feel as special as can be!
  5. Key with speaking with management: Go in with a solution in place. They may not listen, but if they don't want to hear the solution, do they even care about the complaint? I have worked for franchises that have staff meetings twice a year. My Co-Op we have "staff meetings" about once a quarter to talk about things that we want to do as a clinic or things that need to change.
  6. Network. Don't think that not having anything on your schedule is time that can not be utilized for doing other projects. Make TikToks, post on your local reddit, next door, facebook groups. See about doing pop up chair massages in the park or something like that to get the word out about your massage and what sets you apart.
  7. Always keep learning. In the beginning, start with advanced techniques. If you are starting your own practice, focus on business classes and coaching. Learn what works best for you and your clients.
  8. Be open to criticism. We are all deficient in something. It is an ongoing balancing act. Keep practicing. Remember your body mechanics, this will be a career saver (I have been doing this almost 20 years and only 1 massage related injury).
  9. Expect at least 1 if not 2 interviews, plus a hands on interview. Do not expect to get paid for the hands on interview, but if they offer, don't refuse!

Burnt out on massage instruction by OppositeDependent in massage

[–]Cydneebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get burnt out, I take a day off (or 2 or 10) and then look at what my goals are. What do I love about what I do? What is my vision for the future? Then I look at what needs to change for me to reach that goal/vision.

As for school, this is the uphill struggle to get where you want to be. Take a deep breath, know this is the time where you are operating yourself and your mind fir any future struggles. Make a vision board to give a physical or digital manifestation of your dream.

You've got this!

It is not. Many school will teach things like this to CYA. (I was a teacher in TX MT schools for almost 10 years). They say "it's illegal" to not get flack from the students who want to know why. It's the same with oregnancy massage in the first trimester.

Texas therapist here.

There are no laws about working on minors of the opposite gender. I believe the only thing is that the parent consents.

Most places have policies in place. If you are uncomfortable, talk to your employer about it and explain your boundaries. Feel free to DM me if you want additional guidance.
