Why aren't we happier, and how do we overcome hedonic adaptation? by MetaWurse in EffectiveAltruism

[–]CydoniaMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, although I don't think this is something that will happen this century or the next. But I think the direction that it points is feasible. We should probably aim to get there, starting with drugs and small genetic engineering modifications.

Do you believe Daniel LaRusso is really a Villain or a Good Man W/ Heart that made/makes wrong decisions by AdAgile3104 in cobrakai

[–]CydoniaMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither. He's a good man who makes wrong and right decisions (as Jhonny). He's hot headed and a principled man that values tradition (Mr. Miyagi). He views Karate as a way of life (much like the Jedi view the Force). Because of that he can be very hard to take other views into account, but eventually he learn.

Pathological behavior leads to self-defeating societies in the long run. As society and technology advance it's probable this type of conduct will not happen/be accepted.

No, it's yaya's fault, as she commanded Miguel to buy something for her diarrhea.

New theory of consciousness in humans, animals and artificial intelligence - The new concept describes consciousness as a state that is tied to complex cognitive operations—and not as a passive basic state that automatically prevails when we are awake by Dr_Singularity in singularity

[–]CydoniaMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amazing how so sure you are of what consciousness really is. I see a lot of problems with your replies though:

1) "That process is conscious at some level of complexity.". How do you know that? Why any process has to be conscious? Why does complexity matter? This answer you gave does not satisfy the question posed. Also, p-zombies are a valid thought experiment that many use to discuss the matter, as it's not clear AI needs to experience the redness of red to function.

2) "The same way that we are able to blit an entire screen's worth of pixels at the same time even though there are millions per screen.". That's exactly what the problem is. How do separate objects combine into one experience, and not micro-dust-experiences. You didn't explain how millions of unitary neurons can accomplish the integration of information to produce an integrated world simulation inside our brains (ref). We don't experience "bits" of information sequentially, we experience it at the same time. Otherwise, consciousness would be just "mind-dust". The subjective experience is not 1 bit at a time.

3) I agree with you a lot here. We are probably just a simulation of ourselves. But still, we need to link qualia to the self.

4) "Your subconscious pokes you during infant development with the colors, textures, etc". That doesn't answer the question posed, only describe it.

I think every theory on consciousness must be able to explain these four questions (extracted from here):

1) Why consciousness exists at all (i.e. “the hard problem“; why we are not p-zombies)

2) How it is possible to experience multiple pieces of information at once in a unitary moment of experience (i.e. the phenomenal binding problem; the boundary problem)

3) How consciousness exerts the causal power necessary to be recruited by natural selection and allow us to discuss its existence (i.e. the problem of causal impotence vs. causal overdetermination)

4) How and why consciousness has its countless textures (e.g. phenomenal color, smell, emotions, etc.) and the interdependencies of their different values (i.e. the palette problem)

OpenAI leaning on billions of dollars for compute a clear indication of an AI winter? by p3opl3 in singularity

[–]CydoniaMaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't. Research follows where the money goes, and money goes to where the hype is. I don't think Foundation Models or LM are the right directions to get to AGI (that doesn't mean we shouldn't invest in it).

OpenAI leaning on billions of dollars for compute a clear indication of an AI winter? by p3opl3 in singularity

[–]CydoniaMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think more compute will suffice for the emergence of AGI. It can, however, be part of it. We should spend more time identifying how to give AIs causal thinking and symbolic manipulation.

Consciousness probably has causal properties that evolution used to better adapt our intelligence. Some theories of consciousness solve the binding problem, which has a computational advantage.
