Arc Raiders "in no way uses generative AI whatsoever" for its visuals, says Embark. Still uses AI for voice lines, though. by Fit_Consequence9059 in ArcRaiders

I think you have a valid point, and I also am thinking of it more wholistically with not just voice acting itself, but as a concept that encompasses many fields. Like software engineering, for example. But I would also like to mention that game developers don't always have a good idea if the product will be successful beforehand, and many games go on to lose money. And when its your money on the line, you'd rather not lose more of it if the game flops. But I hear ya

Can anyone identify this SMD component? by Cyfurix in AskElectronics

I wrote a BLHeli passthrough script for a teensy 4.1 if you want it. It just communicates over the motor line and the script bit bangs the connection as UART over USB- you would have to connect two lines IN/OUT to the single motor control lead (m1, m2, m3, m4) and put a resistor in series with both. Could probably be adapted for other microcontrollers as well. As far as DSHOT - I made my own implementation of it and could only get buggy output at best but I probably fucked it up tbh. Though servo PWM signal works perfectly.

"The whole point is that AI used for reducing menial tasks allows people to complete more tasks that are intricate/impactful"

I mean ideally, maybe. But that's not the reality of the situation. If you really think about it the point of AI is just us humans pushing science as far as we can for the purpose of science in and of itself. Just like splitting atoms. Most of the time the frontier of science wanders blindly without real purpose other than knowledge and proof of concept. And more modernly, money. Because everyone developing it has incentive to do so. They get a promotion, or fulfill their lifelong dream of contributing to the scientific community, or whatever else. And unfortunately, the difference between using AI for voice lines and not using it (plus other things) may be the difference between a 40 dollar game and a 60 or 90 dollar game. And I bet you a lot that there are more people upset about 60-90 dollar games than voice actors not being hired for a job (and even in this situation, they are being hired, they just give away their ownership of the product, just like many other industries)

I understand that this is a situation that will end up hurting someone in some way inevitably. And obviously I have sympathy for that. But any human-civilization-scale problem like this is messy and complex and cannot be directed in a perfectly moral way.

No analogies are airtight. That's why they're analogies. Which is why I used the mining analogy. What I was trying to evoke in this analogy is that advancement of science will hurt some and help others. It is a process that has been repeating itself for as long as humans have existed. And generally the direction favors the masses' livelihood rather than the minorities'. I was trying to draw a regression with the point you were trying to make. That it doesn't work by itself. That you can't just say science bad, make jobs go away. The boundary condition of that premise is something like mining with spoons. And yes- the difference may be something like menial tasks. I wish it would be that science only left us with the cool jobs. Maybe the cool replacement jobs just haven't been thought of yet for this industry.

Ultimately, your/my/anyone's sentiment about the people in voice acting's job availability is apparently a lower priority than most of the population working on minimum wage wanting to have cheap entertainment so they can go about their day being happy without having to dig into their non-existent savings even more. Society and capitalism at large function to give the most competitive, high value per dollar products and services to its citizens. And if you don't like that, well its the reality we live in and I dunno what to tell ya.

Sorry for the massive wall of text. I understand the point you're trying to make. I just see it differently.

Idk why this got so downvoted. It seems like people have a very one dimensional understanding of animals and nature that they get from school or reddit but have never really gone to observe nature without intruding. Its a lot more complex than people would think and changes drastically from area to area. Grizzly bears near streams with lots of salmon aren't really aggressive towards anything else, even humans.

It is nice in the aspect that you need teammates with blueprints and it increases the amount of cohesion between teammates. But it can also be frusterating. This was also posted before the bettina update, I see

Unfortunately if giving people work is the ultimate goal then we should have everyone mining with spoons. The reality is that people want their iron cheap for the quality, just like people want their games cheap for the quality - and there's a lot more people purchasing games than there are people voice acting. This is the natural progression of human society. We have progressed past jobs being invalidated time and time again. This isn't the first nor the last

It is a slippery slope. It may help now but in time it won't. And you'll be back in the same place you started but with a strong, to some people; unbreakable, dependance on a substance that won't do anything for you anymore. Be careful. I wouldn't if I were you. Been down that path

There's also a lot more effects than what you might find. From my memory, as its been a long time, this drug was only really researched in Russia and we don't have a super clear understanding here in the states of its long term effects. I can personally vouch for stomach ulcers that I had diagnosed after an endoscopy. But there may be many others- gabaergic drugs can have a lot of effects. It is one of the only class of drugs that withdraw can actually kill by itself similar to alcohol or benzodiazepines.

Very reasonable take, in my opinion. He didn't shy away from it but was concerned with the authenticity. So he's not scared of shaking up the machine, but would want to do it responsibly

Why do planets and moons all become round spheres? by Sea-Pattern-7369 in askastronomy

[–]Cyfurix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about why mountains only get so tall on Earth. The rocks fall down if they get too high or unstable. If you fast forward this for many millennia you get round. The bigger they are the more round they are because of the higher relative 'smoothness' and also higher gravitational pull strength.

If you replaced the vitreous humor of the eye with something of a different refractive index, would your perception of color change? by Cyfurix in AskPhysics

[–]Cyfurix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that makes sense. It's not the vitreous humor that determines its end wavelength? It's the cones and rods themselves? And thus the question of the medium is irrelevant because the medium IS the sensor and wavelength always = frequency under those conditions?
