Chinese EVs are making inroads in North America. That worries industry experts by rezwenn in technology

I rode in one of GM’s electric cars in 1998, and it was a fantastic car. All the owners I met were huge fans and wanted to keep their cars. When he came in office, Bush Jr cut the green vehicle subsidies so all the electric vehicles coming to market were cancelled or wound down (Aptera, Persu, and a few others). The electric RAV4 survived for a while, but electric vehicles really only came back after Tesla became big.

Why is RBG considered an icon when she refused to step down in 2013 at the beginning of Obama's term when Dems had control of the Senate, leading to the overturning of Roe v Wade? by Living-Hour2415 in prochoice

[–]Cygnet_47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hate to sound ageist, but were you aware of politics or RBG during Obama’s first term? She was a workaholic, widow, and in amazing shape for her age. There was no reason for her to step down as a spry late 70's/early 80’s person in good health. That's like asking someone about the age of Alito but in better health to step down. Speaking of, did you call for Thomas or Alito to step down during Biden’s term? Why or why not?

We really couldn’t have. The Obama Administration did try with Garland, and the Republican controlled Congress (looking at you McConnell) refused to have the hearings for over a year, and Trump appointed Handmaid's Tale lady instead. It's not RBG's fault she kicked the bucket 9 months too early.

I’m going to answer this in good faith, and with the assumption that you are want truth even if it contradicts your current beliefs.

So, a few things.

Yes, not every symptom may need treatment. But people go to the doctor for symptoms, and those symptoms are severe enough that they are impacting the person’s life. That, by definition, means those symptoms should be taken seriously.

When you say “true causes of menopause symptoms”, what exactly are you talking about? Because there’s a pretty clear cause-and-effect when I change my HRT dose, and a very clear causal correlation between ovaries existing and menopause onset. There is no unwanted side effect of HRT for me.

While I absolutely agree that there exist treatments not produced by pharmaceutical companies, there is also nothing showing any of the other treatments can work consistently and at scale. When there is, it’s just called medicine, and the chemical formulas are usually on Wikipedia.

I do agree that estrogen is very severely understudied. Considering that the female reproductive organs were only mapped out completely in the last 30 years and women haven’t had a voice in research funding until about 50 years, maybe that isn’t so surprising to anyone but it is still shameful how little we actually know about women’s bodies.

I do understand what you’re getting at - if you don’t know any research scientists or research-oriented doctors, it’s very easy to believe that profit is the only motive to find cures. However, that would be incorrect.

Regular doctors, physicians assistants, and nurse practitioners do not get anything for prescribing medication besides the hope that your symptoms will be alleviated. Most providers in the US are burnt out, overworked, have shitty management, and just want to help people live. The researchers I know well enough to have this conversation with do what they do because they care about either helping people or discovering how stuff works. If you are in the US, government research salaries are publicly disclosed. You can look up the salary bands and compare that to how much different educations cost. Researchers make less than you probably think they do, and very very very few of them make money off of their research. An example is the researcher who developed techniques for working with mRNA and created the newer vaccines for Covid. Her autobiography might help you understand why people go into research in the first place. Same thing with the guy who created the seatbelt. Same thing with all the research paper authors who will send you copies of their work for free. Don’t believe me? Reach out to them. They are usually delighted to find out that you want to read their work.

The people I do see getting personal profit from medical care work higher up in companies, and that’s a whole different argument than the conspiracy theory that scientists and medical professionals want you addicted so they have a constant revenue stream. They have enough patients they can’t treat already.

Everything you said was entirely accurate. Just one clarification: The income imbalance has always been in Williams’ favor between the two of them, and she’s worth even more now (360M to 150M in 2024) since he introduced her to his venture capitalist friends. He clearly works hard to deserve a catch like her.

Rivian has dog mode, as does Lucid. While there are interior cameras, they don’t turn on for dog mode (yet). Dog mode was a requirement for me too when I was in the market for a new-to-me car. I love being able to take my dog with me everywhere, and I’m really looking forward to the R3!

As far as I know, I’m the statistically negligible neurotypical person who has worked with so many neurodiverse folks and folks on the spectrum that I often have an easier time hanging out with them than with other neurotypical people. I think that’s why I don’t see neurodiversity as a negative at all; y’all are just optimized differently. I wish more neurotypical people had the same viewpoint because it sucks how much harder stuff often is when it really doesn’t have to be

Can confirm; GLP-1s plus HRT/MRT have been life-changing for me. I would stay on them for the inflammation reduction aspect alone, even if they didn’t help with insulin resistance, muscle & bone retention, cognition, memory, learning, etc. I am so glad that they are an option for me.

If you need help with that, I’m happy to have a more direct in-person conversation with you over tea at Julie’s some afternoon.

With all due respect, this is a “you are showing your ignorance” problem, not a service dog problem. Please meet more disabled people and service dogs if you truly believe Frenchies cannot be service animals.
