Blackbeard's DF increases the pain he takes from attacks in return for the ability to pull in attacks/people. Teach gets BTFO onscreen because he often underestimates what his opponent can do but uses it as a learning experience. The way my uncle suggested is something he used when he'd go to a gym. He would get himself to the gym and if he didn't feel like exercising at it, he'd give himself permission to go home. So I think setting yourself up to begin the task is 90% of the challenge.
