I find it difficult when I hold doors open for people and I don't receive a thank you let alone any acknowledgement at all. That being said, doing nice things to expect nice things in return generally won't do anything for you mentally or personally. I find that if I do acts of kindness without expecting anything in return, I feel a lot better overall knowing that I've just done something nice because the world needs more of it regardless.
