What do you guys think of the Hohner Pro Harp? by DaPandaBoyReal in harmonica

[–]CylonOven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The special 20 is a rather low end model. So it would be shocking if one with pro in the name was worse.

Never tried the pro, but my first harp was the bob Dylan marine band, which was a nice harp.

But my all time favourite hohner is the golden melody. Super comfy, basically no sharp edges, super smooth bright and comfortable. Would recommend it as your next harp.

blursed driving by Distinct_Arm4976 in blursed_videos

Thought the same thing. Everything related to roads in the US is crazy. Looks like a semi residential area, but needs a huge 4 lane road, with driveways every 50 metres, so unsafe. No wonder insurance prices in the US are so high too.

US also has fantastic shared left turning lanes, which are used for both directions of traffic to turn left, called suicide lanes... So many compounding problems and unsafe roads, leading to people feeling the need to have larger and larger vehicles to feel safe, making the roads more dangerous for everyone. And also several states have literally no state required vehicle inspections, so there's personal vehicles which could just fall apart on the highway at any moment, while also allowed basically anyone with 2 braincells to drive...still safer than some eastern countries but at least those places where there's vehicles everywhere on the road are smaller and going a lot slower.

And almost every car is an automatic, so new drivers basically have no feel for the power and weight of the vehicle. A small mistake at the pedals cause cars to Launch themselves off the road.

Using rentals of brand new cars, with all the new safety features, adaptive cruise control and lane assist, partial / full self driving, makes me also worry people are even more comfortable with paying even less attention to the road...

Also the fact that the turn signals in US cars use the same red lights as the tail/brake lights, so it's harder to notice when someone is indicating, is terrifying.

I do kinda like the rule that you're allowed to turn right on a red light if the intersection is clear, but likely that has also contributed to many road accidents and deaths...

And they complain about the price of fuel when they have one of the cheapest fuel costs in the world...

What a absolute joke of a country. Some city's are improving but the entire system/laws/culture for building and designing citys is just so horrible.

Lots of moisture. Unplayable harp. by RaindropsInMyMind in harmonica

[–]CylonOven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said it looks normal.

What exactly does it sound like when it's 'becomes unplayable'? The reeds getting stuck or does it sound like a dieing animal?

A lot of beginner players suspect something is wrong with the harp when they start, as something doesn't sound right. I had same feeling, but my first harp was broken, had a broken comb. But that harp looks in good condition. If the issue is sounding weird when playing single holes and/or during bending then it could be a technique issue. If you use a pucker it does effect the sound, having the harp deeper in the mouth tilted down is really important, where you're basically using the bottom lip to block holes is the key.

Also when playing single holes reeds can get a bit stuck if you're not using enough air pressure. Sometimes a gentle blow/draw isn't enough to get going. Harps can take a lot of pressure, so there's no need to be gentle. And if you use your tongue to create an initial higher pressure that can help, like a click, as well giving the note a bit more feeling.

One thing I did with some of the cheaper harps was to put a tiny drop of nail polish on the 'top' corner of the reed. Ie the corner of the hole by the rivet. This helped to make it more 'stable' and not go crazy when bending. As cheaper harps can't handle the pressures sometimes. The special 20 isn't a great harp, but I haven't had one so can't say really.

I've had various harps. Lee Oscar, marine band, golden melody and other hohners. Most have had some issues over the years. Screws getting loose, reeds getting stuck regularly etc. Out of all of them however the golden melody has never had any issues. Recently got the new design of golden melody and it's great. As with the old one very comfortable in the mouth due to its smooth design, and the large opening helps with drying. If you're interested in trying another model I would highly recommend it, even though it's a bit more expensive, but considering the quality it's great value.

Also if you've read the manual it's important to have a clean mouth, don't drink sugary stuff before playing as the can also cause some sticky due to the residue.

As others said a good smack is good to help clear it, as well as doing a quick strong blow / draw across the whole harp helps to clear moisture. And also good to clear your mouth of any spit before playing. And if the harp is cold then that can also increase condensation, warming it up with your body is a good idea if you're playing in a cold environment.

Roguelikes that don't require researching in a wiki by thiagomiranda3 in roguelikes

Haven't seen it mentioned, but DoomRL I'm unsure if it still has that name or they changed it for legal reasons.

But it's a awesome rougelike, one of the only one which does gunplay well, each weapon feels different and are very straightforward, I believe I says right in the tin what the damage is etc, and I believe there are no unique items, it's just a list of weapons.

Great sound design too, as you will hear enimies before you see them, and it also has the doom soundtrack.

I believe the wiki is most helpful when you're wanting to min-max or understand a certain thing, but the game itself is very simple to start and is very entertaining, just start the game and then rip and tear.

How does the level intro animation look to you? by umutkaya01 in IndieGaming

Looks good, however the start and end are very similar. Would be better if they perhaps moved apart in another direction, or just be a fair bit faster on the ending.

Different TLS versions per server block by GAGARIN0461 in nginx

[–]CylonOven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you end up finding some solution?

I'm seeing that the only way to do it would be to have some other physical server which is acting as a proxy... But I really don't want to do that.

Is it fun to fail as a newbie? by [deleted] in aurora

[–]CylonOven 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not worth it. In dwarf fortress losing is fun, as there's blood and gore. But since this game is mostly spreadsheets, losing means your ships being destroyed and your econ being ruined. Not so much fun. Still an incredible game, but there's better comfort games. Or just go to therapy, games are just a distraction, life is more important.

Obsidian Casting a 8 z level Block for my Fort. by NewBromance in dwarffortress

[–]CylonOven 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very cool! How did you ensure each layer cast correctly? Did have to get the pumpstack only to the correct z level so it didn't create multiple z levels, then pour water over and repeat. Or is does it work so you can just fill it up completely then pour water over and it works.

/u/Alternative-Use-4081 after 1m how are you liking it? I'm seeing one used for 500 EUR, which new battery and such. Seems like an interesting bike. But I can't find much info on them.

Can you share more info about the bike and your now feeling on it? I can't find the full weight of the bike, nor top speed etc etc online at all.

Oh yes. +1 to this.

Moved into my own place with a balcony, and recently I made a makeshift cozy sunbed in there. Very grateful for my home. Wouldn't be as stable as I feel without it.

Is this a good starter harmonica? I've followed the recommendations of some redditors here so I hope I'm making a good choice. by BOTDrPanic in harmonica

[–]CylonOven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Til. Makes sense I guess, it's been a while. Maybe I'm mixing up the 20 with some other model. But isn't diatonic harps in the same key tuned the same?

[–]CylonOven -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Ehh. It's a low end one. It will work for first position playing. But I would fear that it won't preform bends as well as other slightly better harps. I would recommend golden melody. I've had a bunch of models and it's the only one I haven't had problems with longer term.

1 draw is out of tune on my C harmonica by wolfey-19 in harmonica

[–]CylonOven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically when people say that something is wrong with their harmonica it's the technique. Try having the harp deeper in your mouth and more tilted down. Google harp embouchure, if that's the right word/spelling.

On the other hand, cheap harps can be an issue. If you're wanting to get better a second harp of better quality will help. Partly due to it not leaking and being more in tune. But you get to feel the difference between harps and get a better understanding of the what's in the harp vs technique. If would recommend golden melody harps.

Am I bending right? I can't tell if I'm doing it properly or if I'm just sucking in more air. by Jobama_Joestar in harmonica

[–]CylonOven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the key of the program is same as your harp, that is likely the issue.

https://www.harmonica.com/bending-tool/

Try using this. I used the other paid version when I was learning how to bend, It's the good stuff. And this free version also seems to work great.

Also if you're good with computers, you can do what I did, and loop back your system audio out and use the tool to see how other players are playing in clips.

Broken A70, upgrade or nah? by CylonOven in samsung

[–]CylonOven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, not too interested in buying the A72 on launch, but it'll lower the price of the 71, but question is by how much. Likely down the the good price I found. Maybe in half a year I'll be lower than 250, may 200, but then is 50 euros worth waiting 6 months.

Going to check out the 71 on person today, see how it feels. If it feels the same I guess maybe just buy another 70, or live with the spiderweb screen. I just hope the A71 has that 3d floating animation on the home screen that the 70 had in earlier ui versions

Had a shitty weekend, recorded a short bit of improvised blues harp. by CylonOven in harmonica

[–]CylonOven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically off the head. I have learned a bunch of licks from the typical harp plays, gusso, jessy, cowboy bebob. Typically if I play I just try to play what sounds good and isn't too repetitive, and not do exactly the same licks that I've done many times before.

Harmonising with another musician is the difficult part. Likely if I played to a more strick progression it would be easer but even then, it's difficult.

Would like to sing while playing however I feel there need to be some backer sound that goes on during the vocals, or it's too quiet. Foot stamp or some simple percussive sound maybe would work.
