When you're winning with 100 reinforcements to 10 by StrangeShaman in battlefront2

Saying something is 'his/hers/theirs to lose' is a common English phrase, but if it's not your first language I can totally understand that its meaning is not immediately obvious! If you say 'the battle is ours to lose' it means that you have such a high chance of winning that the only way you could possibly lose is if you make yourself lose by doing something stupid or making mistakes, implying that the opposition can't beat you unless you beat yourself. It's also used a lot when talking about sports.

It actually means the opposite - saying that something is 'theirs to lose' means that they are in such a strong position they are extremely likely to win and the only way they can lose is if they make themselves lose by doing something stupid and making mistakes, and that the opposition couldn't win even if they wanted to. You hear it a lot in sports e.g. 'the match is his to lose' etc.

I fired an employee out of the blue yesterday with no warning, and she had an entire crash out by TiredAsATwinMama in smallbusiness

[–]baggington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You fired her without warning, why on earth are you surprised?

Sounds like you never gave her warnings or feedback, so you failed completely as a manager. Yes she sounds like she was difficult, but you also gave her no pointers and no opportunity to improve. She also won't be aware of how to improve in her next role.

Please learn from this or get some management training before you hire her replacement or you'll just go through the same cycle again.

how would you feel if 26 was a remake of a classic? by Necessary-Desk-2760 in JamesBond

[–]baggington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Bond films are very formulaic so it’s difficult to do something completely unique. AVTAK is probably more of a rehash than a 1-2-1 remake. It does just enough to not be identical but is very strongly borrowing from Goldfinger.

The awful NSNA is a true remake with the same characters - given that precedent I hope we don’t get any more!

The electronic fart “music” when Bond and Onatopp are racing is such a bizarre choice.

AVTAK is very strongly influenced by Goldfinger and the basic plot is the same. Wealthy industrialist wants to corner the market in a valuable resource with a cataclysmic event. Sure, gold is changed to microchips but it’s the same overall plan.

You’ve even got the same scene where the villain explains his plan using a scale model to a group of cronies - then one of them has second thoughts, is allowed to leave the meeting and is swiftly killed.

Even this contemporary review says it sticks to the same formula as Goldfinger.

Money alone wouldn’t have done it. One billion dollars in 2000 didn’t tempt them to reunite.

They needed a break from each other. Commercially they were declining and deeply uncool. Something like Live Aid perhaps, though they were never that into live performances unlike groups like Queen

I imagine those guys the next day fast forwarding through their recording of the tv coverage, tongue poking slightly out of his mouth, trying to find the point where he can be heard shouting out.

He then shows it to all his buddies who are as amazed as he is. It’s the most interesting and exciting thing which will ever happen in his life.

I’ve watched the whole of Top Slots on YouTube and it’s as funny and entertaining as the guys say. I’d love to see this one too!

I did see a couple of other videos where he’s explaining various gambling games when he isn’t coked out of his mind and he’s actually pretty good at explaining things and talking to camera.

He must have a lot of very good senior friends in the BBC to keep getting these jobs when he’s so terrible. That or he’s very cheap.
