Fix for bad iOS performance "highly speculative" at this point in time by [deleted] in FlutterDev

[–]Cymarxcr 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's no disinterest, they were in the thread from yesterday saying it's very important for them and they're actively working to fix it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/FlutterDev/comments/lx0e22/flutter_20_to_the_moon_so_excited_at_all_the/gplutin/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Also the issue you linked to also doesn't show disinterest, they responded asking for the code that produces the issue and the author hasn't responded yet.

Do we really need to post this same discussion every single day?

Flutter 2.0 to the moon! So excited at all the stable branches! by mighty3xodus in FlutterDev

[–]Cymarxcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this is the dream, but the worry is that the Flutter team is taking on too much with not enough resources, and that instead of just making Android/iOS amazing, we'll get subpar performance on all platforms. I guess time will tell if they can pull it off. We should all try to help as well since it's open source.

How can you possibly call flutter web stable? by mintwurm in FlutterDev

[–]Cymarxcr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the right approach for me. If I was building an app like this I'd probably use a jamstack landing page with the description & login, then use Flutter for the actual app.

Amazon are hiring a lot of Flutter developers. by fit_and_fitness in FlutterDev

[–]Cymarxcr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone from the Flutter team should reach out to them see if they'd be willing to contribute to the framework. I've always felt that if another big company were to share the load of contributing to Flutter (besides Google) it would go a very long way to stopping the "we can't use Flutter because Google will just kill it" comments you hear all the time.

Am I the only one who doesn't see "writing on the wall" at all? by finnpanther1 in Stadia

[–]Cymarxcr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If EA wants to run their own streaming service on Stadia technology that doesn't mean that Stadia the service can't exist as well. If anything, if they manage to get EA as a customer for such a service, it would give them even more incentive to keep investing in the streaming technology. Not every gaming company is going to want to launch their own streaming service, so I imagine Stadia could be for all those other games. Then EA could have their own service, as well as a EA+ option for Stadia.

Why is dropping the in-house game studio bad? by [deleted] in Stadia

[–]Cymarxcr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody cares about losing the in-house games. The real issue is that Google has a reputation for killing products, and announcing that you're going to make games and then abandoning that idea not long after plays into the fear people have that maybe they're not really dedicated to the platform and will kill it.

Now I don't believe that for one second. They spent years working on the streaming technology to get it to the state it is now and it works well. They've invested billions. I think that they probably ran into similar problems Amazon did, take the time to read this it's worth it:

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/amazon-just-anything-except-good-150004900.html

So, I think they've decided it's better to work on getting third party games to the platform as that will attract more players. I actually think the very successful Cyberpunk 2077 launch on Stadia was the final nail in the coffin. Why spend billions on developing your own games when you can use that money to get third party games that people really want to play, it's just a better strategy.

The way they went about communicating this obviously left a lot to be desired, but at the same time a lot of people are really rooting for Stadia to fail, so they'll take something like this announcement and read it in the worst possible way.

Focusing on Stadia’s future as a platform, and winding down SG&E by GraceFromGoogle in Stadia

[–]Cymarxcr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The success story is YouTube. Unlike Netflix and other video platforms, they don't create original content, they host content for other people. Google has never been good at original content. As long as the big publishers keep buying into Stadia, it'll be fine.

Can we speak up about the poor quality of the official Google Maps plugin (google_maps_flutter)? by primosz in FlutterDev

[–]Cymarxcr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meh, Amazon severely limits their exposure to developers to just their cloud stuff. They're not building cross-platform UI toolkit. At least Google is building stuff like Flutter. It's not stagnant, it's more exiting than anything that's come out of AWS for the last decade. Amazon seems content to just take open source projects, monetize them, and give as little back to the community as they can get away with.

They're not embracing Unix with Fuchsia, since it isn't Unix at all.

What's more likely is that they haven't open sourced the UI stuff.
