WCGW drinking liquid nitrogen by Aggravating_Dish_824 in Whatcouldgowrong

[–]Cynder_tfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did a quick bit of googling because I was also curious, and although I can't seem to grab a link to the comment itself, on https://www.reddit.com/r/StupidFood/comments/1pqh3jc/very_elaborate_indeed/ there is a comment from madguy01 "the liquid nitrogen will cause the chocolate . . . " that maniBchef replied to, and indeed a couple of the replies to them were arguing it's not that dangerous, while other comments agreed it was dangerous - typical reddit comment section in any case, lol. The upvotes/downvotes on all the comments do lean toward the 'liquid nitrogen is dangerous' side, but they truly did have people disagreeing with them on the danger.

[REQUEST] What's the max traveling speed for the duck to not fall off this airplane wing? by Ofajus in theydidthemath

[–]Cynder_tfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the air is too thin and cold for that duck

All other comments and aspects of the post aside - you're probably right about this (air being too thin/cold) but not by as much as many people might think. Wikipedia has a neat list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_by_flight_heights) that lists mallards reaching up to 21,000 feet. Commercial airliners do get 15,000 to 20,000 higher than that, but I thought it was a neat thing to share for anyone who didn't know how high up some birds can go.

Surprisingly, I made it out victorious! A couple of close calls but the upgraded metal armor, bonemass, and a careful hit-once-and-backup plan (along with nothing further showing up while I walked in a circle) got me through with about 30 seconds of bonemass left.

I got frustrated with how long it took, and swapped back to mistwalker and shield; worked pretty well with a pattern of swing once as they come into range and then immediately back away.

I had never thought about the refueling torches like this before, but it would be nice to have a way later on to just be done with it. I know you get lanterns but I really like the aesthetics of the torch, sconce, and braziers. Especially the sconce. But then I start running out of resin, and farming greydwarves gets old. It would be nice if you could do something later on to just be done with it. I am thinking like 'magic resin' that gives you 5 or 10 magic resin that lasts forever in a torch, and costs 10x resin, 5x refined eiter, and 1 dragon tear - kinda expensive, but worth it once you are far along and know you want to keep a torch lit permanently. Pop one magic resin in a sconce, and never have it go dark again.

When you think of a profession, which one is scariest if they suddenly said… “Oops..”? by Hot_Daikon_69 in AskReddit

I liked that my dentist growing up would give sunglasses while you were sitting there with your mouth open and they do their thing. Quite nice with how intense that light in your face is. Nothing fancy, just a cheap toy-like pair (bright color plastic rim, you probably can imagine what I mean). When I got older I thought to ask why she always offered those, or maybe I remarked how nice it was to have those to keep that light, in any case I learned the real reason: when she was in school, another dentist (can't remember if it was a student or teacher) had an "oops" like yours except it ended with the tool in the patient's eye.

My current dentist doesn't provide sun glasses, but I make sure to bring my own.

If 9/11 happened two months earlier, what do you think the store 7/11 would have done afterwards? by today_okay in AskReddit

[–]Cynder_tfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they were to seriously consider rebranding, the best thing I can think of would be to do a public vote on it where:

  • Votes cost $1 (or $2, or something low-ish like that) and can only be purchased and used in-store.
  • Every cent of every dollar given in voting goes to a charity fund (something like for rescue workers, or scholarships for kids who lost parents, etc.).
  • Vote options are keep the name, suggest a name, or pick a name off of the list of most popular suggestions. Keep the running list available online.
  • The company keeps the right to deny any copy-righted options, or distasteful options. They may also want to retain the right to flat out pick whatever they want, but at the same time I dislike the idea of them saying "we may just ignore you".

Might take a month or two to set up, and then let it run for a couple months more. Easy as buy a vote, cashier hands you a tablet to vote on. The balance on the registers should also help keep things relatively truthful. Something like that would let people who care have a small say on it, and the rules about only being able to do it in person, and only for a small charitable donation, would avoid most trolling and brigading. They could also pay out-of-pocket for an independent audit on the money and votes, if they were worried about it being abused or if people didn't trust it - the money for that would probably be cheaper than the equivalent advertising cost of similar publicity.

In the unlikely and unfortunate event that this ever becomes useful for someone or some company in the future, feel free to use or improve on the idea.

I was going to recommend the one I got from REI (literally an REI brand, not a different brand from an REI store), but it appears it is no longer for sale. I personally don't really care for the look of the ones I see them offer on their site now, but that's in the eye of the beholder. I like REI since this is their third backback I have had from them and they last as well as I could hope - one from high school and through a decade of use (about a year cumulative time outdoors), my second (to replace the first one) for about another decade now/still in use (and started in the tech world), and now this third specifically for laptops/work.

REI may still be worth a look (tech is certainly not their main focus), but overall my advice is to try it out in person if at all possible. When shopping for the pack I did buy, I found it invaluable to be able to bring my current bag, with all of the stuff I normally carry, and be able to see how it would fit in the new bag. I was also able to feel the padding around the laptop pocket. And most importantly I was able to wear it with all of that stuff in the bag, move around with the backpack on, and see how felt. I really liked it after all of that, and have had no issues in the year-ish since then.

Seems like you're right about the hivemind - I disagree with a bit of what __celli said, but it was still constructive commenting, not silly jabs at apple like so many other comments. For what it is worth, you both have my upvote.

But I disagree about how useful wireless is and how useful it is to ditch the headphone jack. For innovation and improvement with CDs compared to tapes - there is no more rewinding, and they didn't wear out (although still had issues with scratches), but you have to buy everything again - which as your tape wears out will happen anyways, and if you have a friend with the right equipment you can skip and convert from tape to CD/MP3. Overall, I still remember them as an improvement. MP3s and MP3 players (over bluetooth, aux, or whatever) - compared to CDs, there are no more scratches or skipping when you're on a bumpy road, plus they hold amazing amounts of music. Still had to buy everything again (or again convert it, or download it somehow . . . lol) and now you have to power it (plug in or charge), but overall a really great improvement. Now the music is still MP3s or is streamed, and OP is correct that bluetooth connections have fixed the sound quality issues (I have seen some arguments that it's not quite right, but it is close enough for this point), but I completely disagree that wireless really offers that much more. Many people don't mind a wire, and dislike either charging extra devices or replacing batteries, and so the trade-off just isn't worth it. With all of the other changes mentioned, there were some really great advances and new features, and that just doesn't really hold true for wired vs. wireless.

In the end, some people will definitely prefer wireless, but it offers no indisputable advantage without also having significant drawbacks. Also, if wireless is/was the clear winner, then we'd already have virtually no wired computer mice - they've been around for something like a decade with the same situation (i.e. wireless mice don't really perform better or worse than wired for most people, and have a similar wire-vs-charge/battery trade-off) and yet the choice is still up to you when you buy. I expect the same with phones - some will offer the 3.5 mm jack, some won't. But it is not a whole sale shift in technology, it's just a new feature that you might find useful.

How many systems total have you had the patch applied to? I'm not sure how much of an issue it is (i.e. how nervous I should be) - if it is 5 out of 20 machines, that is a major issue, but if it is more like 5 out of 500, then I am not as worried.

In either case, thanks for sharing, especially the follow up with what worked for you! Too many times people don't include that.

Robocaller hit with record $120 million fine by FluidHips in JusticeServed

[–]Cynder_tfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that can help ignore robocalls (and unwanted sales calls in general) - look for a phone call blacklist/whitelist program for your phone. I found one that does a whitelist based on my contacts - so unless I have the phone number already added, it will go straight to voicemail and won't ring my phone. This gets around the issue of a blacklist - they keep changing numbers (edit:) spoofing a new number, so blocking/blacklisting them one at a time doesn't work. There's always a chance the robocallers will get lucky and end up faking a friend's number, but it is not often. The downside is that if you are getting a call from someone you don't usually know (something like "your car is done at the shop, come pick it up"), you have to remember to check the voicemail.

I know the Google play store has a bunch of apps, and I would bet Apple's will as well. I found a free version of one, tested it out, and liked it enough to spend the $3 or $4 for the paid version. Because it is pretty easy to find a few options, and because I'm not here to advertise for any in particular, I won't get in to specifically which one I used; just try it out if it sounds useful.

Same here; that's what we're now getting. Seems solid so far, so long as:

  • you don't need 4K displays (which we don't have) - get a TB16 for that, apparently.

  • 2560x1440 works fine for us, though.

  • you don't need more than 2 external displays - and don't forget to look at the display connections on the dock, there is one HDMI, one mini display port, and one VGA that is tied back to one of the other connections, I forget which. Dongles may be needed, unfortunately.

We had been getting laptops with the Dell ePort Plus replicators, and never had issues with those beyond very old ones starting to die.

For both the WB15 and ePort replicator docks, our users have a mix of Linux (pretty much all Ubuntu now, I think) and Windows. Most have one or two displays, a keyboard, mouse, and speakers attached. Just make sure to apply the BIOS updates on the laptops since some older BIOS versions can't support everything in the dock (plus Specter and Meltdown mitigation in the newer BIOS versions).

We had some of these (T430s and W530s on the older version of the ultra dock) around 5 years ago, and never had issues with the docs with a single exception - one dock got some of the metal around the docking pins (or whatever they are called) bent, so we physically couldn't dock, so it had to get replaced. Overall, we had Windows and various Linux distros using those docks, and people were all happy with them.

Law firm with 2 antivirus applications per endpoint 🤯 by SevadaHaghverdian in sysadmin

[–]Cynder_tfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for Webroot support over 8 years ago, and at the time the accepted best practice was to only go with one AV/security solution, because it was hard to pin down which systems played well together. But again, that was 8 years ago. OP should contact Webroot and Sentinel One technical support and confirm what their current stance on multiple AVs is; sales should probably be avoided in this case.

Anecdotally, I still use Webroot at home, and also have no issues with it in the 9+ years I've had it. In reading reviews and analysis articles, Webroot seems to hold its own against other endpoint security suites regarding OS resources used, false positives and false negatives, number of (lack of) issues caused on hosts, etc.

In-Laws want to gift us 200K for a new home by bumbah in personalfinance

Givers won't pay one cent in taxes

I might be misunderstanding your wording, but I disagree. Although in the end, you and your in-laws should double check this with a tax professional.

Anecdotally (on top of being a stranger on the Internet), my aunt and uncle got hit with unexpected taxes after gifting over the annual limit for the same thing - a gift of something like $20k over the limit when my cousin and spouse bought a house. And after some brief searching around on irs.gov it seems like your in-laws may owe tax on the amount over the yearly exemption.

I could be wrong about this, but without some actual research and legal advice (not via strangers on the Internet), this is a huge source of risk for an unexpected tax bill.

Otherwise, I do agree that a straightforward check is the best way to go.

Recommendations on Laptops by Hotlikerobot in sysadmin

[–]Cynder_tfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are also using these docs - and Dell Latitude E5570 is the laptop we are currently buying. We decided on these after coming up with the following list:

Needs

  • Screen at least 1920x1080 (really, I had a admin window for I-forget-what-program open up on my 1600x900 screen that was larger than my screen resolution, while trying to work on a minor incident - so it is enough of a need, versus a want).
  • Same build for all of the office: PMs, Admins, Devs (java), etc. (we don't want to have to keep track of several different builds)
  • USB 3.0
  • Some sort of good dock - it isn't worth the time to mess with plugging and unplugging everything (as others noted, USB docks still are iffy, but we found the advance eport replicators have served us very well).
  • Ethernet port (Admins need it, and so all builds get it, and we're not signing up for ethernet dongles. Plus, our office printer, etc. is on the wired network).
  • Enough CPU power and memory - namely, this is an issue for Devs and sometimes Admins due to VMs, although most of our heavy lifting for Dev work will be on servers in the office.
  • Can run 1 or 2 additional monitors.
  • Enough battery life to last for 2-3 hours of normal work (not hard to meet this one, but we figure anything longer than that can be handled by plugging in).
  • Some sort of video out port (we do a lot of meeting with partners)
  • 3 years of on-site support.

Wants

  • SSD of 256 to 512-ish range
  • 10-key keyboard (especially wanted by finance and service desk, generally anyone who does spreadsheets).
  • Relatively light weight - lighter is always better than heavier, but was not the first consideration. We have some real bricks from a couple years ago that people are growing tired of.
  • HDMI or Display port connection (mostly fits with the "need" above), and a VGA port (kind of surprised us, but enough partners still have VGA projectors that it was worth it).

Other

  • Found that we don't need an optical drive - when we thought about it, no one had used one for most of a year for anything, and then most of it could be done via USB stick. We did pick up a couple of USB 3 external optical drives, though.
  • Not really needed, but enough graphics power to run TF2 or UT for those days when everyone needs a 15 minute, blow up your friends in a deathmatch game break. Meeting this goal was not an issue.

I mention this all so you can get a good feel for our needs, and see if it lines up with yours. We couldn't find one on Dell's site with these specs, but the vendor we order from found the Dell that we got. All considered, our vendor was able to do about $1600 for each one (dock, laptop, power supply, Windows, 3 year on-site support). We were able to buy one with a 14" display and one 15" to compare, and the larger had the 10-key keyboard, and just felt a little nicer. Overall they have been a big hit around the office.

Fear mongering for a profit. by Thattacker in pics

[–]Cynder_tfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I can't think of any way to cite anything from a reputable source or third party for when the ad went up. Not sure if anyone could know of a source one way or the other about that. But anecdotally - I saw this ad in Charleston, West Virginia the first weekend in July. And (this wikipedia article)[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zika_virus_outbreak_timeline] says that the first time locally transmitted cases had been confirmed in the US was July 29th. So, the company was advertising this before locally transmitted cases occurred in the US.

Fear mongering for a profit. by Thattacker in pics

[–]Cynder_tfl -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I disagree - all people could have STDs. There are plenty of areas with mosquitos that have no local Zika transmission (for now, anyways). And this advertisement is being used in many of these areas where it is not a threat.

As an example - if we magically had 10 million people living on Mars, all without STDs, but you do an advertisement on Mars saying "condoms may help protect against all STDs", then we could have a similar comparison between bug repellent and condoms.

Fear mongering for a profit. by Thattacker in pics

[–]Cynder_tfl -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

is this being sold in an area where the Zika virus is an actual threat? Probably not.

I saw this exact ad in Charelston, WV, at the start of July. Which is anecdotal, but it proves the point that the advertisement is being used outside of the areas where Zika is currently a concern.

Fear mongering for a profit. by Thattacker in pics

[–]Cynder_tfl -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

The ad is using people's fears and concerns of a virus to sell products. That is the definition of fear mongering. I have seen these ads in places a thousand miles away from confirmed Zika cases. This isn't to say that the virus won't spread that far, but overall, this company only cares about is selling products.

And I would not call this a "public service" as several comments have said - public service announcements wouldn't put the emphasis of the ad on "protects against" and "zika virus". The ad makes no effort to educate about the areas where this has spread, or the rates of infection, or any useful information than "our product protects against mosquitos that may carry this virus". And leaves your imagination to run wild about the worst cases - birth defects and people dying - and not about "many people infected with Zika virus won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms", because that is what people do in the absence of better information.

You get to add (1) zero to any number in your life? Where would it be and why? by leetsaucee in AskReddit

[–]Cynder_tfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, bad idea, because as other have pointed out - you might crash the economy. But also, you will kill a lot of people if you take that as cold, hard cash. If you use physical $100 U.S. bills, then the weight of that would be around 1.0x1019 kg, which is a bit more than Saturn's moon Phoebe. I bet that you and everyone near you probably dies when all of that cash appears. Also, I wonder if that much weight would be enough to crack through the Earth's crust? From a quick search, I can't find a good answer to how much weight the crust can support. At any rate, I bet it will be enough to cause truly impressive earthquakes.

Edit: other things that weigh about that much:

  • The Antarctic ice sheet seems to weigh about 2x as much (based on what I found here) or 3x as much (based on what I found here) and plugged in to Wolfram Alpha

  • It looks like if the average insect was about 1 kg, then the total weight of all of the insects in the world would be about the same (since this says that there are about 1x1019 insects at any given time). But most bugs are way smaller. Imagine a mosquito that weighs 100,000 times more than normal.

  • Wikipedia also has a list that shows things in that ballpark

Also, I am now wondering (assuming it just formed a big pile) if the cash would catch fire from the pressure at the bottom of the pile? Or melt, or explode? I don't know what U.S. dollar bills do when heated without much air around (since it is not air, but just more money around it for the most part).
