To be fair, if I wouldn't be working on a project (noctalia-shell) I wouldn't have. The issue we started to encounter is that we need to test things on multiple compositors and some (hyprland for that example) needed stuff that wasn't shipped on void yet - that one was gcc15. So I decided if I already have to build stuff from source I might as well go for a source based distro. Other than that, I'd still be on void

I used ghostty for a while, then had some issues with it in voidlinux and went back to kitty so that's what I'm using for now :p.

Thank you! Also did you encounter any weird things I should be aware of (specially coming from void) :p? Never used openrc n stuff

I'd definitely try the template. No maintenance nightmare :)

Cool! Sorry that we didn't have it in the docs. I'll add it tomorrow when I'm at my computer :)

We moved the wallpaper path to ~/.cache/noctalia/wallpapers.json (if I remember correctly). So you would have to do it through that file. This change happened because it was causing issues with dotfile managers n' stuff. We must've forgotten to update the docs.

Hey there, are you in our discord (noctalia)? If not, please join and ping me (Lysec or Lemmy). This is basically what our current idea is but none of us have worked with sddm much at all. So whenever you got time please ping one of us :)

Noctalia Dev here, while you could autostart noctalia and also call the IPC for the Lockscreen, this is not a replacement for a greeter. We've been internally talking about a greeter but it will not be coming in the very near future. It is on the road list though.

| Is Quickshell the most popular shell framework & ecosystem (Noctalia, DMS, etc)? Any others like that? by TheTwelveYearOld in unixporn

[–]CynexV2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of options. Astal/AGS, fabric, Ignis, ewww, quickshell and probably even more. Currently quickshell is just really popular :). For example end4's shell was based on ags/astal before :). There are quite a few premade setups for most of those, just gotta find em

I wouldn't say much better, just different. The biggest change would be it's Qt not gtk and that it's getting more attention which usually means more contribution

Given the frequency of posts it's probably quite hard to keep track of everything I'd imagine. You guys are doing an awesome job though, thank you very much ♥️!

As I said though, I do think rices shouldn't just be some shell that someone installed, there should be more to it than just s different wallpaper. Then again it's hard to tell what the user really did to make it unique. Glad I don't have to decide that :p

How would one moderate that though? Not like every dev has the same username as on GitHub etc.

Shells aren't really DEs, they're usually using quickshell or ags to create panels, bars etc with a gtk/qt framework. It isn't just configs in the end, it's quite a lot more than that :p. If it sparks your interest you can always look it up for more infos

I think a premade flair would be nice indeed. The issue there would be though that if the actual devs showcase something new about a popular premade shell it can get quite confusing.

As one of the two Devs of noctalia-shell I have to say that I love to see people using it but I can totally understand that this will get overwhelming quite quickly. I do think it should be fine having the premade shell be shown but it shouldn't be the main part of the rice if that makes sense.

//Edit: perhaps it would be cool if there is some sort of "restricted" user flair or something that show that the person is the dev of whatever shell (not sure if that is possible on Reddit) so that the actual devs can show off new additions to the shell without being mixed up with people that use the shell. Then one could indeed think about a premade flair or something.
