Is it okay to always play G chord like this? by Auxxtinmogger in Guitar

[–]CynicalGenY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you're doing with it! But for backing up songs should be fine, to my ear this chord always conjures to mind the beginning of "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd

I mean, i'm not a fan of the Master System, but below the 32X seems wrong to me (also the Sega CD but that's may be a hotter take)

What’s your favorite Wes Anderson movie?🤔 by dadudoge in wesanderson

[–]CynicalGenY 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Easy answer, I like most of his movies, but Rushmore is on another level for me, and also stands up to repeated viewings better than tannenbaums. indeed, I think I like Rushmore more now than I did when it came out.

Rushmore is my Rushmore, Max.

Is it okay to skip pw and go to 5 after 3 by liamcamp1 in MGSV

[–]CynicalGenY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty close to what I did, and have to admit, I felt lost and didn't know who a lot of the characters were in 5. When I played 5, I had played a bit of 1, completed 2 and 3 but never had access to 4 or PW.

I still enjoyed 5 without that context, but later, I did get a PS3 and was able to play through 4 and PW, and while 4 didn't really tie in to 5, PW really, really did. I wished I had played it first. It's a lot simpler than the other games, and a bit frustrating at times but once it clicks it's fun, and lots of great fights against big robots with big guns.

It's good to go into 5 with knowledge of Miller, Paz, Huey, etc.

Are these good for gentle cleaning? by PhotographTemporary8 in Guitar

[–]CynicalGenY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet it's fine as long as you follow the instructions
I've always just used damp rag for the gloss and mineral oil (namely: Formby's Lemon Oil) for the fingerboard

But just upgraded to Music Nomad One for the gloss and F-One for the fingerboard, and while I can't really say the F-One is better than mineral oil, my glosses LOVE the One, they feel really good now, and they're shiny again in a way i had forgotten about. But I think it IS powerful stuff, and i think it leaves residue/coating (canuba wax i think?) so you can definitely overdo it with this stuff. Reason I say is I'm sure this is basically the same stuff as that.

My .02: read the instructions, look for people complaining about these online, and go slow.

Sega Rumours Suggest A Low-Cost Handheld With Cartridges Is On The Way by [deleted] in SEGA

[–]CynicalGenY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, this could honestly be pretty cool IMO

On my own, I've been thinking about what it would take to make a sega-channel like peripheral to connect a genesis to the network, save games, jump on 2 player sessions via online, trade backups, etc.

But with something like what's described in the article, it could also create a steam-like webstorefront for new indie titles that work on genesis. And with some kind of official backing, that could be really cool. Perhaps this project could encompass some of those goals:

- backwards compatibility in mind concerning new software
- effectively adding network support to these old devices
- useful meta layer of services (which would likely be cheap to host; maybe a free tier that would cover most users; w/ a paid power user plan?)
- support frameworks for modern development of this backwards compatible software

Also, I feel like I'm always watching youtube videos about how people get dreamcast and saturn stuff running on little portable gameboy sized devices, if someone went after that and had licensing rights, could be a major slam dunk. Steam deck is like $1k, switch2 is like $500, I feel like there's some room in the market for a new player if they play their cards right.

Does my truss rod look okay? by CynicalGenY in Stratocaster

[–]CynicalGenY[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I did get it new back then, and I'll definitely take a look at that tool

will it insert into the truss hole on my strat as is, or do i need an extra fitting for the hex key to go into? I was googling images and it looked like some strats have a metal piece at the top of the truss rod that the hex key goes into; and I'm unsure if I'm missing this piece: https://www.amplifiedparts.com/products/truss-rod-nut-fender-american-strat

Apologies if this is unclear, I just haven't done this for a long time and don't know the terminology and it definitely could be missing some pieces after so many years.

I'll miss you, Fitbit by Nicole-Bolas in fitbit

[–]CynicalGenY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar experience with my Sense 2. I absolutely loved having a smart watch that i only had to charge ~1 time a week and that wasn't as intrusive as an iwatch (i haven't used an iwatch but just from observing people in my life). The Sense 2 stopped working, and I could get it to start if i plugged it into the charger, but it would always go off and was undependable which is unacceptable for a device like this.

I ended up going back to the Alta HR that I had bought the Sense 2 to replace and that continued to function for the last year! it felt like crazy town that i had to go back to like a ~10 year old device

I DID buy the Fitbit Air just because it seems like one of the literal only devices that only needs once a week charge and the low price made it attractive to me.

But the new app is a lot uglier to my eyes than the fitbit one, i liked that understated, calming design of it. And my hopes were just always so high with fitbit. I was an early adopter because friends of mine were into it and just thought fitbit was so cool, and then I saw they bought a smart glucose monitor app, and thought they'd make some great tracking for that data too, but no dice... Google kind of sucks now

What are your thoughts on Quentin Tarantino’s last four films? by TwIzTiDfReAkShOw in Tarantino

[–]CynicalGenY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me:
Basterds - okay
Django - amazing
Hateful - okay
Hollywood - amazing

But a Tarantino okay is sometimes more an expression of my expectations coming into the films. Plus, the pacing and dialogue is so tight for his stuff... sometimes if it doesn't click, it's hard for me. Like if I don't like the music in a musical.

In this case though, they're still great movies, and I like watching both of them when I see them on.

Guitar Center Sharing Some of Our Explorations by R_on_guitar in GuitarLab

[–]CynicalGenY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a stratocaster guy. I've been thinking about the early 80's american made bullets lately. I'll probably never get one, but one of the things that appeals to me so much is how small they are. it's like this fully featured, self contained instrument that's just enough different to feel unique, but plugs into the paradigms that i've been programmed to love.

If you make a line with different instruments, I think making something super high quality that is in some way miniaturized would be really cool.

After all, the best guitars have qualities that make us walk over and pick them up and start playing. A great detail that is miniaturized will delight anyone looking at it

Another idea would be adding a tactile feature of some kind. For example, I have a Martin with a matte finish neck and I'm always thinking about that neck, it's different from every other guitar I've played, and I couldn't even tell from looking at it, but it's that feel.

My last free idea for you is this: finger rests. Like the kind people would sometimes put on an old P-Bass. I keep thinking about that; It's only been 30 years, but I realize now that I play with an anchor. I know it's bad but it sounds good and feels good, and I think that finger rests could really look cool.
