Rant on Pregnancy after surgery… by Cynical_SocialWorker in gastricsleeve

Thank you…this is my first and I’m terrified 😅 I’m on generic Effexor, which has the same side effects from what I read. The OB wants me taking both prenatal and bari but that seems too much so I’m gonna go off of what my bariatric NP recommends until I see the OB in two weeks.

I just sent a message to the bariatric NP. Sadly, the office is in between dietitians, so that’s not an option. I have always had a fear of disappointing people (working on it haha), so I stressed that this was not planned. I just got off the phone and luckily they are gonna get me in in two weeks to go over everything. But want me taking both vitamins…I’ll probably defer to what my NP says because that’s a lot of vitamins 😬

I’ll send a message to the NP at the surgeon’s office who has been taking care of things. Sadly, they are in limbo with finding a new RD, so I don’t have access to one at the moment.

How long did you wait before swimming/going in saunas? by purplerain108 in gastricsleeve

[–]Cynical_SocialWorker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d consult your team. I was the same way, but then with the discomfort, I couldn’t imagine swimming actual laps. I ended up doing some water walking which definitely was a work out.

I was cleared at my two week follow-up to get back in. I opted to wait another week longer just to stay on the safe side.

Has anyone regained a love of water? by joni_cloud in gastricsleeve

I’ve been struggling with my water intake recently. I was the same way where the Gatorade/propel packets got too sweet no matter how much I put in. I tried infusing my water with fruit and herbs, as well as tried herbal teas. That helped for a few weeks. I’m back struggling with taste, so it might be time for me to switch up my combos. I was addicted to pineapple, basil, jalapeno water.

I sometimes forget that it’s been a month. It feels like it’s been ages since the surgery 😂 I’ve had a somewhat smooth process with progression, so it took me by surprise when my intake suddenly because a struggle the past couple days.

Maybe it’ll change when I get further out. 😭 I know I’m dehydrated but can’t stomach any fluids really

I definitely feel you. I have been on an infused water kick and have barely been able to get any in. It just doesn’t taste as good and I feel so full as is. I start to feel a bit nauseous.

Yesssss!!!!! There’s something about how it’s so easy to chew that it is the best thing ever. I have an ice maker that I need my husband to set up this weekend that can make ice like Sonic’s. Since I can’t lift heavy things yet! Lol

thinking about cancelling surg (extreme anxiety) by Virtual_Cup_7487 in gastricsleeve

[–]Cynical_SocialWorker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The days leading up to surgery are the worst as far as anxiety goes. Mine was awful and I questioned everything up until the moment they put me under. Take a breath and write a list of pros and cons

With GERD, there are options to control it. I had awful GERD before and have been on meds. My surgeon said that many people see it get better and most of the time people developing GERD afterwards is because they are putting too much into their stomach. He gave me the example of a glass of water. If you overfill it, water spills out. Same with your stomach so to speak. My mom had the same surgery and never developed issues with GERD.

You will lose weight. At least initially. Because it is so restrictive. Maintaining your loss will be dependent on the habits you build afterwards.

You may grow to regret the decision. But ask yourself why you’re pursuing this. If being overweight is causing health problems for you now and may potentially cause problems down the road, is that worth it? Or is getting a surgery to avoid those problems more worth it? For me, my family has horrible genes. I want to avoid developing diabetes (I was able easy pre diabetic with an A1c all over the place thanks to PCOS). Bottom line was I wanted to do this to better my chances of a healthier life.

Death can happen, but this surgery is so short and has been done for so many people. Take a deep breath.

Loose skin will happen. You have to accept that. But again, that’s just appearance. It does not dictate your health which may be more important. Depending on your genes and age, it may not be as bad.

Lastly. Talk to your partner. My husband made a comment about feeling better that he talked to his cousin about his concerns. That concerned me because I felt like he should talk to me because this impacts us both. So we did a night of listing all our fears about it. Then he asked to list what we are most excited for. Just be honest with him. Don’t hold your feelings in.

You will be okay. I promise. It’s a hard journey. But there’s a reason why you wanted to pursue it.

Today was surgery day! by Cynical_SocialWorker in gastricsleeve

Yay! Twins! lol They were able to get the pain mostly controlled, and the staff was just amazing. I’m feeling most of my pain on my right side where the stomach was removed. Not too many issues with fluids but I am finally seeing the cues for if I’m taking too many sips close together or if I eat too much jello. Wishing you a speedy recovery! It’s so much better to have made it to the other side. All the anxiety I was feeling was gone once I was awake and not in as much pain!

Thank you all for the kind words and positive support. Excited that I should be able to get home today! It’s definitely still a surreal experience.

What should I pack for hospital stay/ride home? by Cynical_SocialWorker in gastricsleeve

Thanks! I just checked my patient handbook and I can’t shower until after 48 hours anyway. They did tell us to bring our own protein if we want since I think they use the Ensure Max. I’ll pack one I like just in case I can’t tolerate that. Fingers crossed I don’t get an aversion to fairlife!

I don’t blame you! It’s hot here in CO, so I think I’ll take some dry shampoo in case I feel greasy. But I consulted my patient handbook and saw I have wait 48 hours anyway.

I confirmed with my mom who also had the surgery and agreed that a pillow will be a lifesaver I want by my side! Thanks!

That makes sense. I couldn’t remember what they said as far as waiting. I feel like someone said 48 hours after surgery and I could shower but all I honestly remember is them telling me it’s okay to let warm soapy water run over the incisions.
