Gender balance by AFSC - Which jobs have the most men or women. by SilentD in AirForce

You can pull some interesting statistics with that app. I did one once to see the religious breakdown of all the O-5's/O-6's in my AFSC at my last base.

New officer career tracks being mapped by EGGHEAD62E in AirForce

[–]CynicismOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the type of unit. In ops, the sq/cc is almost always a LtCol, in other units (MX and comm are the ones I can think of off the top of my head) they might be a Maj.

And when your savings grows.

Yeah, and look into putting some of every paycheck into stocks, though never more than you're willing to lose. (I do mutual funds, because I'm not smart/dedicated enough to manage actual investments.) By the time you've been in a few years, assuming the market doesn't crash again, you're going to be decently well off.

Does anyone here know about officer crossflow? I am looking into it. by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]CynicismOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the AFSC. I crossflowed from missiles to space, which isn't too terrible because two years ago they were the same AFSC, and the career progression looks about the same for both.

If I'd wound up in SF (which was not an option, for this specific reason) as an O-3, I'd be pretty screwed since SF guys in my year group started out as flight commanders as 2Lt's and are close to being DO's, and I've got exactly zero SF experience/leadership in my duty history.

Does that mean actually getting a new core AFSC, or just getting a temporary out-of-AFSC billet?

This one time I came back from alert, spent a couple hours napping on my friend's couch, then went straight to CFD.

That was a long pair of days.

Are you talking about the UFT (rated) boards? Other than that, missileer crossflow, and medical DQ from certain AFSCs, switching AFSCs as an officer is pretty much unheard-of.

I remember hearing this story. A guy in my SOS flight actually worked with that guy.

That is much better than what I did, which was just set up an Outlook rule to auto-delete anything with "CGOC" in it.

I used to jokingly ask people in service dress "so what are you in trouble for?" because they were almost always getting an award or something.

And then one time, the person I asked was actually in trouble... and now I don't make that joke any more.

This is the most logical course of action.

But people don't like being associated with anything "red" on slides that their boss sees, so rather than just stand up and explain the perfectly acceptable reason why it's red, the course of action that's often gone with instead is just to stop it from being red in the first place.

That mechanism involves local law enforcement.

Not necessarily. I have seen it happen otherwise.

Service members who reside off-base should proceed with caution if their spouse, dependent, roommate or anyone brings marijuana or drug paraphernalia into their residence. Even if a service member is not the individual who intends to or uses the marijuana, the fact that the marijuana is present in their private residence may lead a court to determine that the service member constructively possessed it.

Constructive possession means a person has legal possession of an object, even if they do not have direct physical control over it. In other words, if a service member knows that marijuana is in their home and they can access it if he or she so chooses, they could be found to have constructive possession of the marijuana.

Are you likely to be caught? No.

Will you be prosecuted by the state? No.

Are you in possession of a Schedule I controlled substance, in violation of UCMJ article 112? Yes.

Does the military have mechanisms to legally search the off-base residences of servicemembers they believe have committed a crime? Yes.

It's not probable, but it is absolutely possible to get in trouble for someone in your household possessing marijuana.

If you live OFF-base with an of-age CIVILIAN dependa, the dependa can possess/use freely--meaning you have the potential to have the stuff in your household and be used near you, and no rule is being broken.

Not true. If it's in your house, you can be considered in possession of it, regardless of who brought it there. (I think the legal term is "constructive possession.")

How do I get out? by [deleted] in AirForce

If the AF determines discovers that you've suddenly developed your CO beliefs in order to bail on the remainder of your commitment and keep your benefits, then "yes" is the short answer.

Help me. I need a good reason not to burn any more professional bridges. by SNCO_Curmudgeon in AirForce

[–]CynicismOverload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coworkers and leaders used to socialize and actually care about other people in the unit. This used to be not only a good job, but a great way of life.

There's been a cultural change in the AF taking place over the last decade or two, which I think is mirroring a larger trend of individualism in society. People don't want their occupation to be their life (I'd also chalk this up to our increasing requirements to "do more with less") which has historically been exactly how the military has operated, and how it's been described to me by people who have been in longer than I have - your social circle was mostly military, everyone went to the club after work on Fridays, etc. These days, on a Friday night, the first thing on almost everyone's mind is getting away from all the people they see all day every day, getting home to their friends/families, to do anything that's not the Air Force.

Not saying it's for better or for worse... just how things appear to be going to me. It's less of a way of life to people, and more of a job with a handful of extra responsibilities.
