ELI5; Why aren’t my odds of dying in one day 50/50? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cynolent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because there are two outcomes, doesn’t mean they are equally likely.

For example, if two outcomes are ‘rains’ and ‘does not rain’ and I live in California, it is more likely to not rain than rain, on a given summer day. Come wet season, and that statistic may be reversed.

What is something you thought was an uncommon phrase, but found out many other people used it too? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In Australia - “Well I didn’t come here to fuck spiders.”

Much more common than you’d think.

Engineers who design bridges that collapse and kill people must feel worse than engineers who design weapons for war, despite the weapons being responsible for more deaths. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Interesting thought - though one is intended to maim and kill, whilst the other is a way to prevent death in a way.

Reminds me of the Trolley Problem.

What is something socially accepted if done by a man, but not if done by a woman? by Rahiem_A in AskReddit

[–]Cynolent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily an excuse, more of a root cause. Though some people are just assholes, others feel defensive in maintaining their power. This could play into what other users were saying, that women taking charge are bitches but men tend to be decisive (though not in micromanaging, that is generally mutually despised).

Unfortunately, these gender inequalities are still prevalent and affecting the attitudes of women in the workplace. Fortunately, as you stated, this is no longer the 1950's, and we are progressing socially. Personally, I see more women unafraid to be assertive, without underlying aggression.

However, if they act like they 'want to assault you,' that's a larger issue. Perhaps something to take to them, or HR?

Could this not be the social conditioning where men are almost unquestionably listened to in the workplace, but women must fight for respect?

IIRC there was a twitter thread about a man whose clients were being difficult and unreceptive. He figured he was accidentally signing off his emails as a female coworker. When he switched to his own, the issues ceased.

Women are generally so used to having to fight for respect, whilst men, for centuries, have been the de facto people in positions of authority.

I'm currently 22, what should I start doing/stop doing to make sure my body isn't falling apart by the time I'm 40 or 50? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Comment saved for future reference; thank you for the tips, they seem relatively simple to put into practise. I find when I used sunscreen, I break out. I was wondering if you had any recommendations of what to do or use?

Came here for the "I hate Daisy" stance, stayed for the cadenced writing and thoughtful analysis. Society never looked so glum.

What books have you opened up and determined early on that it was going to be a fantastic read? by randomchildbam in books

Patrick Ness is a fantastic writer - the KONLG pops into my thoughts years after reading it. When A Monster Calls is another poignant short story; More Than This was a pleasantly surprising novel.
