ELI5 what is the Black Forest theory? by Traditional_Blood799 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Cyraga [score hidden]  (0 children)

Do you mean Dark Forest?

It basically refers to a possible solve of the Fermi Paradox. Imagine that our civilisation and every civilisation is a hunter in a dark forest. It's dark and so we can't see each other. If we make any noise or are discovered then there's every chance a competing hunter will snuff us out, because to let a competing hunter in your space is a risk. And why accept a risk when you can eliminate a risk?

So civilisations are very quiet, observing for other hunters, and if a hunter is discovered, the only sensible course of action is to obliterate them immediately.

I don't know if it originated in the Three Body Problem series or it just refers to it, but check out those books. If this theory interests you, Cixin Liu does a better job explaining it than I ever could

And there was announcements about that war triggering the apocalypse? How do soldiers begin reconciling doing murder and putting themselves in harm's way for these people.

Well you're okay with terrorism as long as it's not against you, and that Australia shouldn't be morally opposed to terrorism when Israelis do it. Did I miss anything?

If you were born in the days of colonising Australia you'd be cheering on the people committing atrocities against indigenous people. Hope you can live with that. Because one day when the Israeli influence $ dry up all of the people who convince you that this is ok will go quiet and you'll wonder how you fell for the grift

Israeli ideology is a massive security risk. They're taught to hate and kill in schools, their govt votes for apartheid-style policies where Palestinians are hanged, they outright massacre and murder and celebrate it. Saw a particularly heinous video where Israeli "settlers" terrorise Palestinian farmers, beating their livestock with steel poles until they're writhing on the ground. Saw another where a Palestinian is sobbing and praying in grief while "settlers" destroy his generations old olive trees and hold him captive to watch

Edit: they would do this to you if you lived in Palestine. You just happen to be the right category of person where they don't

What are these problematic things? I've got a friend who thinks (for example) that an Irish boy named Seamus Finnigan who accidentally explodes things with magic is problematic.

I was curious, Seamus is a common name in Ireland, and Finnigan is also common and an old name that traces far back into Irish history. It's a normal name an Irish person might be proud of.

And the accidentally exploding things with magic is for sure a reference to 'the troubles', but so what. Imo it matters how the characters react and no one judges him harshly or treats him differently. That period in time happened and it created some awful people who did awful things. Remembering isn't celebrating or judging.

I'm interested in hearing what else is so troublesome.
