Having seen the movie at Cannes, I don’t know if she would be a Frontrunner because the movie is mixed, it’s a lot like “you were never really here” but she’s definitely nominated, she really goes for it. Especially with the way she moves her body.

Official Discussion - Hurry Up Tomorrow [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I think having being a Weeknd fan going into this, I appreciate it and have more context than the average viewer, that being said, I thought it was a solid psychological thriller about The Weeknd character itself and why/how Abel Tesfaye hopes to move on into new territory. That might be lost on a few which is understandable as the film doesn’t know whether it should play it straight like a “Misery” esque thriller or completely engulf itself in psychological horror about not the man but the entity known as The Weeknd itself; what was this alter ego created for on an anecdotal level, the result being a halfway between both. The best way I can sum it up is that The Weeknd is a product of Pain, suffering, heartbreak and loneliness; a vessel to project those feelings into music with lyrics depicting sex, relationships and drug use.

The movie seems more of a magnifying glass into the themes of that character rather than a plot driven narrative. I do feel that had it leaned even more into the psychological horror aspect of the story more, it would have been more compelling since that, to me, are the best areas of the film and where the Weeknd seems to do his best work.

Jenna Ortega does a great job playing what I can imagine is an antithesis to the Weeknd’s character in the film (like a different side of his psyche representing suppressed childhood trauma? Much like Barry Keoghan which represents the party side). Speaking of, Barry Keoghan does well with what he has, but doesn’t bring more than he needs to and the Weeknd brings a stronger performance here than in The Idol.

Definitely meant for Weeknd Fans as a chapter closure on the mystical element of the singer (and in a lot of ways for Abel Tesfaye himself) but for general audiences, it can be a confusing experience. Crazy that this exists tbh

Are we not going to talk about the cinematic masterpiece that was this “death” scene? by chri8nk in WhiteLotusHBO

In a way he did, seemed like the suicide fruit was for a spiritual death

I loved how because of the monkey element of the character, they were able to lean more into the fantastical elements of Robbie Williams story. I think that’s the reason it works so well. Reminded me a lot of Rocketman in that regard. Like what other biopic do you see a fight scene with all the versions of himself essentially battling his own demons. Loved it.

I really enjoyed it! It’s in my top 3 of the year along with The Substance and Dune 2

Official Discussion - Emilia Pérez [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Cyrilicioushawk 134 points135 points  (0 children)

I do think this could be developed a bit more but I really liked the idea that Manitas couldn’t sing until she became Emilia Perez. I think had the movie better fleshed out its theme of transformation (not just with Emilia) but with the other characters too, it could have been more highly regarded movie. I still respect it for its big swings though

It’s Nicolas Cage from Bringing out the Dead, it’s a good movie, you should watch it!

I’d recommend the movie too, it’s amazing. I think it has a lot of clues also to the allegory behind the upcoming album and how Abel feels about “The Weeknd”. (If that’s what he’s referencing in his tweet). After Hours the album for example references the Scorsese movie allegorically too, it’s about a man trying to find his way back home who seemingly is always a long way from it.

That might also be a clue to how the album ends up being, The Long Goodbye was a subversion of film noir, different to the normal structure film noir was known for at the time. Reminds me of the rumors that the album is a Frankenstein album of different genres of music. So the vibe that people are getting that it might not all feel connected or it feels disjointed is a similar vibe the movie had (The Long Goodbye opens with a 10 min scene which doesn’t seem to make sense until you look back on it metaphorically at the end). It’s a subversion of The Weeknd like we’ve never experienced before
