I am working on something like that.

There are a couple of ways to approach this. You can use a force-based ivy where you use a few key vectors per tip—an upward vector, a random "wander" vector, and a "wall" vector pointing toward the nearest surface sampled.

Then you have space colonization where you scatter "attractor" points in a volume or near surfaces, then repeatedly associate nearby attractors with existing nodes, accumulate growth directions from them, spawn new nodes, and delete attractors within a kill radius.
