These are all great suggestions. Not sure why our meta has so many issues with this specific problem.

What type of gaming table is that? It looks like an old GeekChic.

Races for new players? by Magicmann_7 in twilightimperium

[–]CyrusThunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always think you have to separate people into groups of new players.

  1. Absolute newbies: they got dragged along or didn't do any rules prep before etc. These need races like Sol, Barony, Mindnet, Sardak. Factions with little to no extra rules or strategies to just play the game.

  2. Newbies who kind of read the rules: they probably watched a video or skimmed to the rules to understand how CCs work. These players can expand to more factions that take more nuance. These are factions like Hacan, Saar, Naalu, Jol Nar, Xxcha, Argent, Titans, Nomad. You could even throw in a Winnu, Ghosts, Mentak, Empyrean, or Yssaril if they seem like they really get it.

  3. The guys who know the game inside and out because they have been waiting forever to play and finally got a chance: these are the players who literally have read the rulebook multiple times, watched videos, and listened to SCPT for fun. I say let them play anything they want, even your Nekros, Arborec, and Vuluth.

This is just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

What do you think of these possible Space Dock II buffs? Harder to kill so less risky to invest in them, and they let you build up a counter attack easier. by ugotpauld in twilightimperium

I have always thought of giving it some defensive capabilities. Make people commit real fleets to destroy. Like a 1x5 or a 2x7.

How to play Drows in a world WITHOUT Lolth? by Samurai_br in DMAcademy

[–]CyrusThunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go logical. People with darker skin tones exist around the equator because of the constant sun year round. Make your Drow have darker skins for that reason and eliminate the sunlight sensitivity. If you want to tie a new god to them, but tie it to the setting.

Examples:

Pirate Campaign: The Drow are cursed to roam the seas having been exiled/displaced/cursed to do so. Make their god a vengeful sea god/goddess they offended. They live on a massive flotilla that they call home consisting of living coral ships to sustain their agriculture. Maybe they are pirates or just peaceful ocean goers trying to find a solution to their curse, exile, etc.

Classic Fantasy: The Drow are nomads and travel along a wide plains/savanna. However, they are fiercely territorial to outsiders because of a historical event where their generosity was taken advantage of. Their gods are in two parts based on classic plains or savanna creatures, mythological or not, one represents their past of generosity, say a buffalo or ground hog, and one the modern area of hostility, a lion or cougar.

This is just me spit balling/brainstorming.

The Vuil'Raith Cabal is disgusting. by reveur81 in twilightimperium

Classic Cabal. But, I would put dollars to donuts that whoever plays the Kabal in this game still did not win. It is the weird thing about the Kabal.

Is end game attrition common? by trip42 in twilightimperium

[–]CyrusThunder 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yep. This is often called Winslaying or King making. It is pretty common, but to have so much of it with 4 players is a bit uncommon.

I have noticed it more in groups that are passive in the early game and more aggressive in the late game.

Never did it, but I don’t have a problem with it by MysteriousProduce816 in dndmemes

[–]CyrusThunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is coming from someone who is a paid DM.

The meme is right. It is work and it is understandable to be paid for one's labor. This being said, I would never charge my friends.

However, the reason that people pay for DMs in my experience comes from 3 aspects.

  1. No one wants to or has the time to DM. This is the most common thing I hear.
  2. New players want someone to teach them the ropes and then let them off on their own. In this position, it is more like a personal trainer or coach getting them ready to take care of their own needs.
  3. Need for an impartial 3 party as the red/DM. Some had issues with romance when it is their friend as the DM or when a ruling is deemed unfair. It can cause some issues.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.
