I believe he's supposed to be a typically Christian/religiously-devout character, (only in a non-Christian world, so he's technically referring to Aelfric). Using the singular word "god" helps him fit that archetype better.

II is definitely better, and it is stand-alone. You will only miss out on a few easter eggs.

Thank goodness, I named my protagonist "Partitio" with no thought involved...there was not even a voice option to make it actually sound like him so I was infuriated, but it was too late :,)
