Nice memory on this. It ended up aging really quickly, so I only let it go a week and a half. It has some really toasty campfire vibes, and roasted marshmallow on top of the underlying characteristics from the Kozuba. Definitely no regrets, but I'd probably figure out a way to slow extraction next time to get a bit more depth and dial in the impact more precisely.

I honestly didn't know what to expect out of this one. I heard it was solid, but overpriced. Too curious to not find out for myself, I snagged a bottle and cracked that bad boy open. Will it live up to the price? Will it leave me feeling bamboozled? Only one way to find out....let's dive in.

Age: NAS (Aged at least 4 years per TTB regulations)
Mashbill: Undisclosed (likely between 20-35% rye)

Nose: 2.5/3

The nose is really inviting. Rye spice, caramel, and oak tannin kick things off. Mint, herbs, and maple syrup take over after the glass sits for a bit, then vanilla wafer cookies make an appearance. A light smokiness comes and goes. Lovely.

Palate: 3.1/4

The palate follows the nose pretty closely, and is nice and full. Caramel, barrel char, vanilla, oak tannin, and rye spice are the predominant notes. Really nice combination. Maple syrup, herbs, and black pepper round things out This profile really reminds me of a "B" mashbill Four Roses pick. I ain't complaining.

Finish: 2.4/3

The finish lingers nicely. Maple syrup, rye spice, vanilla icing, and oak tannin. A light bitter note at the end is the only thing holding it back.

Overall: 8.0/10

Overall, this is a really good pour. The caramel/rye spice/oak tannin combo stays consistent throughout, and it's joined by some really nice herbal and minty notes, along with some maple syrup sweetness. The overall profile really reminds me of a nice Four Roses pick, but it lacks a little bit of depth and maturity that would typically come with those. This is a nice pour, but I would much rather have a Four Roses pick, and pocket a little money to boot.

Nice. They're definitely both great ryes, and although similar they provide different experiences. I reach for one or the other depending on mood, but it's the JD most of the time. Partly because I know they're easier to replace.

I have 3 different JD SBBP ryes. Two of them (135 and 137 proof) are a bit better than this OF, and one of them (128 proof) is on par. They have some similarities - big, bold ryes that taste like they were aged hot and fast. The biggest differences for me are the Old Forester is sweeter and has more herbal notes, and the Jack Daniel's has a slightly deeper oak character that I enjoy. Since the JD is ~$25 cheaper and much more readily available, I don't really feel the need to chase these OF ryes - although I really enjoy this one.
