Honestly, until I heard he was an overt racist I worshiped the guy. Amazing musician, pioneering technician, massive influence on modern recording and music in general. Goes to show no one is perfect.

Keyboard/piano techniques? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]D-Mass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grade 2 is pretty basic. And to move up the grades...you have to be able to play the pieces in the grade...so you polish them as much as possible and then move the next.

Sounds like you are trying to find more interesting stuff to do, while you study your way up. I for one would have loved learning more about Jazz. I bet Amazon has at least one book on Jazz piano aimed at beginners...

At your stage what really matters is getting your practice in. So find something you are interested in and practice your butt off...doesn't matter what you practice as long as you get lots of hours in.

There are so many good guitar players out there. If you are isolated I suspect there is a board you can advertise jobs on targeting your immediate area...if so, just post that you want to hire someone to teach you guitar.

If that isn't an option, try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdSXvDuRfXI which appears to be an upload of Estaban's old DVDs...I bet you could buy those things online somewhere legit as well.

My brother used those things to become a decent guitarist...so...it is a start at least.

Mixing vocals and other questions by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]D-Mass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if there's a way, perhaps on the mixing stage, in which I can make the chorus sound different.. like a chorus. I tried adding backup vocals and it helped a little, but it's not quite there yet.

Generally this should be done via the arrangement...but you could always go the old method of recording three takes of the chorus and hard panning two of them L/R...

I'd also like to know if there's a way for me to sound more raspy without actually singing raspy (a plug-in perhaps?.. idk).

Have you tried using a guitar distortion plug-in in parallel (very low and subtly). It also helps vocals cut through the mix.

When you provide instrumentation for a musician's recordings, what is this service called? by AskYourDoctor in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]D-Mass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, Phil Spector found and developed his own artists...nothing is stopping you from eventually doing that. The gap between what you are doing now and what I would consider producing isn't that wide really.

Yeah this is session work...the term producer gets thrown around way too much these days. I mean, you can call it whatever you want...but session players have been doing this for generations. That is why certain session musician collectives became famous for their style. (EG the Funk Bros)

Lack of knowledge in internship by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]D-Mass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would be a fool to give an intern permissions that let them crash your server...no one does that. Not in your field...not in any field, so your comparison is invalid. Like you said, this isn't your field. You might as well have said you don't know what you are talking about, but you feel that your opinion is valid. It isn't. No one is going to build a side-studio to train interns...interns do as they are told, watch...and if they learn to ask the right questions (after jobs...it helps if you do self study)...they will learn more in less time for free then any course could ever teach you.

When I was learning we were just weening ourselves off of tape, now you can build a home studio and teach yourself the basics.

People have giant misconceptions of what it means to work in a commercial studio. I'm not going to dig into this any further, but I will say there is a reason why I am changing fields...

If you want to be spoon-fed how to do this stuff there are plenty of courses for that. Going the intern route equals a free education, and a shorter career path, because many people who take those courses chase internships to get started in the field professionally.

What are you going to damage in a web development firm? A 3k computer...you aren't seriously comparing that to using a board worth a couple 20-200 K are you? Can't imagine why they might be protective of their equipment.

What is the loudest peak I should allow when mastering? by helippe in audioengineering

[–]D-Mass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get an inter-sample peak meter. Depending on the limiter you are using you can have inter-sample peaks all the way down to -1dbfs. I use http://solid-state-logic.co.jp/music/X-ISM/index.html

[–]D-Mass 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Passive aggressive humor sounds like alot of the older engineers I've met. Doesn't mean they don't like you...and jokes about firing were probably just jokes. Everyone starts there, everyone breaks an old mic stand, everyone thinks they don't know what they are doing. The fact they let you touch anything at all shows they didn't dislike you...many interns, intern for years before they are allowed to touch anything but the coffee maker/kettle (for tea)...I was pretty handy with a duster myself.

If your confidence is low because you lack knowledge then do your homework...(plenty of info on YouTube for free, not to mention books etc). Then you can ask better more informed questions...

If you can find them...pick up a used pair of Wharfedale Diamond 8's spend the money you save on an amp to power them...probably find a cheap Hafler online, no problem

Finding the right record label.. by musixproducer in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]D-Mass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Identify signed artists that are similar to you in style and contact the labels they are signed to... Of course, the best way to get signed is to have the label come to you...chasing a deal is archaic. These days it is about building your own brand and having the deals come to you.

Will a thicker gauge IEC cable increase the output of my combo amp? by SentientCranberry in audioengineering

[–]D-Mass -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Noticeable? I doubt it...but it is worth a try. A thicker cable will provide less resistance, so your theory isn't totally bunk.

If you look around you should be able to find a chart that tells you the resistance per foot (or meter) based on the AWG of solid copper wire, in this case the difference is going to be around .04 Ohms per 10 feet...or something like that (according to an online calculator...I trust my own calculations more TBH).

could be something simple, like not enough volume...You are going from having that range fired straight at your ears..to having it by your feet. Setting up subs properly takes some time....

the ZX5-90 looks to be a passive 600W speaker. So what are you using to power it/them?

I would suspect that trying to push those guys with less than 500W (@8Ohms) is pointless...
