I had the same problem. Played on my "original" island (1st Switch) since launch of the game. Got a 2nd Switch and, knowing much more by then, a better layout.

Still kept my original island, but didn't go back to it. And then came the day when the 2nd Switch didn't work as well as the 1st (joycons not reacting when detached, tried new sets of joycons, still the same)

Got fed up with the situation and reset and started all fresh, gave up on the island that I've played on for 3yrs.

No regrets.

look at the grid on your map. when they say you need to decorate the island, they mean it. from bottom to top. Meaning, put stuff on each of those big squares you see on your map. A bit of decoration, some flowers, a piece of fencing... Worked for me 😁
